Re: Could someone describe how to bend a guitar string?

Yeah, I agree with post 3. Forget the chords first. Bending is usually done while playing melodies and lead lines anyway.A couple more tips for you:To make bending easier you can put your middle finger as a support behind your ring finger. SO if your ring finger is on the 7th fret of b-string you can put your middle finger on the 6th fret. So you can, so to say, divide the work between two or even more fingers.Once you have got the main idea down the next thing you should do is start practicing your bends being in tune. When doing the whole step bends you can reference the bent note on the b-string using the high e-string.So, when you bend the b-string from the 7th fret up a whole step using the ring finger, you can support it with your middle finger. This leaves your index finger free and thus you can place it on the 4th fret of your high e-string, which you can use as a reference note. Hope I explained it clearly enough.

Re: linux kali getting started as a newbie, study project

Sorry about derailing the topic just a little bit, but I am also a Virtualbox user and am quite happy with it.The main advantages I found are the addition of command line interface and ability to run the virtual machine in headless mode, which means that you don't have the annoying virtual machine window open all the time, especially when you ssh into it.So I have created a batch script that runs a virtual machine in headless mode, waits for 20 seconds and then launches the ssh connection.Although I haven't used vmware for years, so maybe these features are also added during that time.

Yeah, the new strings need to stretch for some time. You can speed up the process by pulling them upwards a bit and doing a lot of string bending.

The built in command line utility findstr should work. So, open your command prompt and type:findstr /m /s "string you want to search" "path to the directory"The /s switch tells the utility to search the directory and its subdirectories. The /m switch tells the program to output only the filename it found the string from and not the string itself. So if you wwant to see also the string, just remove the /m from the command.

Re: Lets Talk Bass Guitar

I'm mainly a guitar player, but sometimes I also pick up my 4-string instrument. The exact model is Yamaha RBX-170. It has PJ pickup configuration, which means that it has a p-bass pickup in the middle and jazz-bass pickup near the bridge. As an amp I used to use the Hartke Kickback-12, but as it was too big and heavy I have considered getting something smaller and portable for a long time. In the fall I will probably order myself a TC-Electronic bh250 for a head and bc208 from the same company as a cab. Acording to the reviews the head is really small, so you can easyly stick it into your gigbag. It also has some nice chorus, octaver and compressor effects. In order to change the effects you have to use the Toneprint app on your smartphone, but I've tested it and it is completely usable on Android. Also, the head has class-d poweramp, so if you don't want to use the cab and want to connect it straight to the mixer or audio interface, you can do it via the xlr output. The 2x8 cab doesn't have so much bottom end as the larger ones, but it is a lot more portable and I can probably drag it much more easily to some jam sessions. Also as a drive pedal I'm planning to buy the Electro Harmonix bass soulfood. In addition to some nice drive sounds it has also the blend knob, so you can mix your dirty sound with the clean sound.

Re: What is the strangest or scariest thing that has happened to you

Fortunately I haven't had a lot of scary experiences, but the one which was a bit creapy is as follows:I was shopping for some second hand vinyl records and after getting a nice stash of them, decided to go home. After walking for a couple of minutes on the street, I heard zombie like grunting from around the corner. As I really didn't feel like facing this creature, who was either extremely drunk, high or just had some serious issues, I turned around and started walking back, hoping that he will wonder off somewhere else. Instead I heard the grunting getting closer and closer. As I had no idea at all, what the hell was going through his mind, I started running, the zombie sounds still following me. So I entered the building I exited some minutes ago, whaiting while he would go away. As the building has a cosy bar downstairs I spent some ten minutes there, chatting a bit with the other people. Later on I thought that this guy may have just some kind of speech problem, but very probably not, otherwise he wouldn't follow a guy making zombie like sounds all the way.

I guess listening or feeling the morse code in high speeds is in a way kind of similar to listening your tts in a very fast rate. When sighted people hear my screenreader, they often ask me, how the heck can you understand it. Then I explain to them that I have just gradually made it faster and faster. It seems logical to me that it works the same way with morse code. Of course, whether or not to dedicate a big chunk of time to that is another issue.

Re: Lighting Fireworks Independently

The basic thing for me is still the same. You crouch down, put the ends of the match and a fuse together and after lighting the match and hearing the sizzling of the fuze you rise up and run.Of course lighting the bigger things on the ground is much more dangerous, so you better practice with the smaller stuff before attempting the larger ones.Although this may seem like repeating over and over again, I still have to say that you've gotta be careful with the fireworks! The last thing I wanna sea is someone getting hurt or injured while trying the methods I described in this thread. So as stated before, I do not take any responsibility for any consequences that might happen while trying the stuff described before.

Re: Lighting Fireworks Independently

@22 If you mean the very last explosions that were preceded by the so called whistling sounds, then it was done by the only partially sighted guy from our group and he put a firework into a metal container of a whiskey bottle. I was laughing quite hard because it sounded quite funny at the beginning, but actually that was one of these experiences, which as ManFromTheDark wrote, is the one we do not wish to repeat. After a little while the firework turned itself around and made some blasts towards the other direction, wer, as we have been told later, some cars were parked. Everything ended well, nothing got damaged, but still after finding it out, I was not laughhing so hard, as you probably guess. SO, this example also shows that fireworks are not some playthings and you have to be careful with them.It also has to be said that we were completely sober while doing this, because as you know all too well, alcohol lowers the sence of danger and therefore it's a big no no when lighting fireworks.

@13 That was probably the firework in a really really old washing machine. Yes, we got the permission from the owner to do various stupid things with it  and yes, it can be dangerous, so as the saying goes: Kids, do not try this at home.@14 Usually the fireworks we have in Estonia have quite sizzling fuses, so when you strike the match but don't hear the sound, then the fuse didn't ignite. So then just grab another match and repeat. Of course it has happened that I was not sure if it actually lit or not, so just in case I threw it down and run away. I have wasted some of the stuff this way, but better safe than sorry. And short fuses are really uncomfortable to light indeed.

Re: Lighting Fireworks Independently

@11 Yeah, kind of. Only usually when lighting the fuse, the match and the fuse are already together before striking the match.@8 The car alarms tend to go off quite often when a loud bang occurs. The cars were not so close, but yeah, they can be quite sensitive to that. Sometimes I have heard in my apartment how the car alarms go off after a really loud thunderclap.

Sorry about double posting, but if you want to hear this method in action, you can listen to a recording where me, couple of other blind pyromaniacs and one partially sighted guy enjoy making the newyears fireworks. In the beginning it is quite mild, but later on it gets more hardcore. The talking is in Estonian, but hopefully you get the main idea. Re: Lighting Fireworks Independently

I have lit fireworks for about 9 years and my fingers and other bodyparts are still attached. I have burnt my fingers a bit, but nothing major.A big disclaimer! I do not hold any responsibility for the consequences that may happen while trying my method, which is as follows:1. Put the end of a match, the one you will strike, and the end of the fuse together.2. Strike the match.3. Wait a little bit.4. When you hear the sizzling of the fuse, drop the firework and run! If there's no sizzling, whaitt a bit more and then repeat the loop from step 1.So, this method won't work so well in a noisy environment and will probably get quite dangerous. And the most important thing, use your goddanm common sense!

Re: Good audio file converter for windows that is free?

Yes, you can batch convert in Audacity. Go to file menu and then edit chains. After creating a chain you can add effects, but there is also export mp3, export ogg etc. Actually there is already a chain called "mp3 convert" or something like this. To apply the chain go to file menu and then apply chain. You can specify the mp3 quality when you choose export from the file menu.

There's probably much nicer and more elegant way for doing this, but when I want to run a command in the background which produces some output, I usually do this:nohup my_command &When I want to view the last lines of the output I type tail nohup.out. That works after logging out and in.Correct me if I'm wrong, but jobs command should show you only the processes that are active in the shell they were started in. So it may not work after logging off and then back in.I have used mainly pgrep .

Re: frightened by the sounds of games

About 7 years ago I used to play Swamp quite extensively. I also have high blood pressure and back then I didn't take the meds for it. Not the wisest thing to do, but I was kind of afraid of the sideeffects, addiction or whatever. Yeah, of course you kind of depend on them, but what's better, take a pill every day or run the risk of a bloodvestle in your hed going kaboom. But back to the topic. I listen to quite a lot of stuff in my headphones and sometimes fall asleep with them still on. As it was also quite stressful time in my life back then, my bp probably got quite high. So when I woke up with my headphones on, I quite a lot of times heard my blood rushing in my ears. My heartbeat had quite the same tempo as the Zombies walking in Swamp and the closed back headphones I had also made the sound feel louder. Add in the fact that I was just waking up. So it was quite strange and creepy experience.

Re: embarrassed to hold the white cane

Many years ago I didn't use my white cane alot when I was at some parties. I don't remember very much, what was going through my head at that time, it wasn't self-consciousness, but rather some misconception that if there are quite a lot of people there, using the cane propperly is quite hard anyway. This resulted in some quite humorous incidents, where I was assumed to be really hammered when I bumped into people and various things. As I also wear dark glasses, one story illustrates it quite well:A guy approaches me, puts his hand on my sholder and asks with that "I know what you're feeling" voice: Man, how many days you've been drinkin'?Me: (really confused): Umm, aa, That's my second beer.Guy: You're wearing sunglasses.Me (starting to realise) Aa yeah, I'm kind of used to wearing them all the time.Guy: Like sensitive to light or something?Me: To be honest it really doesn't matter to me if there's light or not. After that the guy disappeared without saying anything. And here's my slightly off topic question for native English speakers regarding the first question in the dialog above: In Estonian, in which language it took place, we have a really informal way of asking "How many days you've been drinking?". It translates to something like "Which day is it going?" or something like this. So, what is an English informal/slangy equivalent for that? Not that you would ask this in a formal situation, but you get what I mean.

It depends on your processor and mainly on how much ram do you have. I have 8 gb and although I sometimes wish I had more, I can use my virtual machine quite nicely with it.I don't know how you actually do it with virtual machine, so that every program you installed gets lost, but my wild guess is you booted from the iso image and forgot to install it on a virtual harddrive.I'm using also command line in my virtual Linux machine, but instead of using speakup, the screen reader for command line, I actually ssh into it, so I can copy and paste stuff if necessary.

It depends how much money you have to spend. As I got it as an aid, I had to pay 45$ (that should be from 45 to 50 dollars, or something like that). For this price there was no hesitation for me. True, you can do the same things with an Android device, but having a dedicated device with physical buttons makes listening to books and podcasts much easier and distraction free. If I had to pay about 400 bucks, I probably might have made a different choice.Although bard content is not available in Estonia, I can still enjoy the local audiobooks in Daisy format, Audible content and different podcasts.

I myself use actually Virtualbox quite successfully. Yes, Vmware is much more usable, but Virtualbox has some options I really like, especially the headless mode. As I ssh into my virtual machines quite often, in order to copy and paste more easily, the icon of vmware on my taskbar got quite annoying to me. In addition to the graphical interface, you can use Virtualbox from the command line as well. But yeah, the gui needs some time for getting to know it. If you're using NVDA, object navigation is quite useful. But of course, if you plan to use win7 in a virtual machine, Vmware makes probably more sense.Regards

Re: Your Favorite Guitarists?

Many of the names mentioned before are among my favorites as well, but I don't feel the need to repeat them, so let's add some more great guitarists:Alexi Laiho from Children of Bodom.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d8F3t-F_grcMark Knopfler from Dire straits and his solo stuff - He has such a great tone and feel when he plays.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dd3btVhwr48Joe Bonamassa - More bluesy kind of stuff. I also dig his playing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F1_6yCHnSI4Buckethead - Many of his songs are as weird as his name, but he also can make so called conventional music. Really diverse guy - on one album he can play heavy and shred like a maniac and on another he can play really soft and mellow. And he has a hell of a lot of albums. In one year he releas
ed over a hundred of them!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZaDQaPoLyDYDave Mustaine - Although I have heard quite a lot about his personality being like it is, his playing and mainly his riffs sound just awesome. And let's not begin the debate Metallica vs Megadeth here! LOL I like them both! Now some acoustic players as well:Richard Thompson - One of my favorites. In addition to his playing I really like his timbre of voice. He has also quite a cool accent when he speaks.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XHecFDLa9FALeo Kotke - That's just awesome what he does on his 12-string. He has quite nice raspy voice too.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v10j1H1fYJgAnd let's not forget Tommy Emmanuel! - Besides his playing he seams to be really humble and down to ea

I'm afraid you will run into quite serious accessibility issues when trying to control a mixer with IPad or phone, so I guess you're better off with the mixer which has physical knobs and faders. But of course I'm happy to be proven wrong about the app thing, so if anyone has some experience with them, let your fingers do the typing.

This post might be a bit off topic, but as we are already discussing different English accents, here it goes.First of all I really do like Brian Johnsons accent. Hes the man who sings in AC/DC. When I googled his accent, I read from a forum that hes got the Jordy accent, but hopefully Dark can confirm or falsify it:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VZl9CHPuzXkThen theres the rolling r thing. One of my favourit examples is Ramachandran. I guess one of the reasons is that this kind of r suits very well with this kind of huge voice:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rl2LwnaUA-kRegards

Re: music tech and gear discussion and reviews.

If you want to play the synths or keyboards with your guitar and chords arent important to you, you can buy Sonuus g2m (guitar to midi). Although you can play only one note at a time, you still can get leads or cool basslines with it. I got it for about 95 eur, which in dollars should be a bit more. A couple of videos about it:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7fGHFtlt97whttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mEb4sNVNCjQIm going to As it detects one note at a time, youve gotta have really clean playing technique and different picks can yeald different results. Im planning to order myself the Korg Volca bass in a month. which by the way can make quite nice lead sounds as well. Another option is to use a multieffect box either as the usb interface if it has that option or send its output to the soundcard. Nowadays they have quite decent amp and cabinet emulation so if you dont mind fiddling with the knobs, you can get quite good tones out of them. Of course these boxes can have some accessibility problems, so you have to try them and read the manuals to kno how usable they are.

Got it working last weekend. In win7 64 bit you have to enable driver test mode in order to get the bns emulation running. For images larger than 2,88 mb you can use mkisofs to create cd images of a directory.I also created a couple of batchfiles which ask the directory of which the image should be made of. The images are named floppy.flp and cd.iso, so you dont have to browse the images every time you want to mount them.If you want to start the speech every time you boot the system, edit autoexec.bat and add s in the end of the file. The only two problems I have is that I cannot access the asap control panel with alt+enter and I couldnt get the audio to work in dos games with sound, but otherwise it is really awesome!

An alternative to screen filter is an app called shades and it has a couple of advantages to me: First, you dont have to start it every time you power up/restart your phone. If I remember correctly, screen filter had this issue. Second thing is that my sighted friends have told me that with screen filter, although the text was dark, the screen was still lighted, with shades it should be completely dark. So it should be more battery friendly.

Re: Linux and other questions

Regarding the second question: Are you using sudo/root while doing it? The permission is denied probably because if I remember correctly, regular users dont have permission to modify /usr/lib directory.

Re: music tech and gear discussion and reviews.

I listened to that review and the fuzz sound was quite beafy and had a really nice bottom end.One thing though, as I know, but of course I can be wrong, is that Brittish sound is usually associated with the more mid ranged, cutting sound, think of Marshalls and the American e.g. Fenders have more bottom end.Really liked the description, gave a good overview how this beast looks like.

Re: music tech and gear discussion and reviews.

All right, I try to list my music gear.Instruments:My electric is Schecter hellraiser avenger. At first it had EMG pickups, but as I couldnt get so nice clean tones out of them, I got them changed to some Gibsons (I dont remember the exact name of them). Theres also coil tap installed, so I can get some nice single coil tones.Acoustic: Washburn wd15. Has quite a large dreadnaught sound and as I tune my guitars whole step lower, it suits me really well.lap steel: Peavey powerslide. Also quite a good change and in addition to playing it the standard way, you can also, thanks to the strap system, play it by standing.electric bass: Yamaha rbx180- Im not sure about the number though.Acoustic bass: Ibanez AEB10E I also have a Tenson strat copy, which is actually quite crappy instrument, but as it is my first electric, it stil holds a sentimental value for me.Mandolin: Vintage vfm500er.Small synth and dru
m machine: Korg monotribe2 didgeridoos and 8 jews harps.Amps:My tube amp is Laney lc15 - has quite a distinctive tone, but Im starting to grow tired of it.Micro amps: Roland Microcube, Marshall ms2 and Blackstar Fly 3. Got the latter one a couple of weeks ago and I really love it! You can check it out from the following video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oA02o_BThTcBass amp Hartke Kickback 15. I have recently quite rarely used it.Processors:My main processor is Digitech rp360xp. Is really cheap and has quite good tones inside. I usually run it straight to the mixer or soundcard. The knobs make a nice click when they are turned, so I know quite easily, where I am in the effects chain, so it is quite accessible. unfortunately the software is not. Before buying it I got myself Boss gt100. When reading the manual I got the impression that it is quite usable for the
blind. But when I received the unit, it turned out that none of the knobs clicked when turned. So I had no idea in which part of the effects chain (distortions, comps, amp simulations, modulations etc) I was at. And as the order of effects was quite different in different patches and you have to turn the knob just a tiny amount, it was a real pain to use. SO I returned it.I also have Vox Tonelab EX, but I dont use it any more, due to the fact that it is quite limited. But it gave me quite a good introduction to effect processors.stompboxes and pedals: The main two pedals I use besides the processor is Digitech Whammy and Jamman solo xt looper.Besides them I also have Rocktron Rampage distortion, Big muff, and a chorus/flanger, delay and wah from Ibanez.

Re: music tech and gear discussion and reviews.

@assault_freakHave you played the slide guitar? If yes, it isnt much different, the difference is that you put the lap steel in your lap, so the strings are facing the ceiling. I cannot find a better way to explain this. Reminds me that quite a lot of blind players tend to play the regular guitar at first like this, myself included. Dont really know why.Lap steel players usually tend to use a different kind of slide, so instead of putting the slide on your finger, they use the kind of bar you can hold between your fingers, so you get more controll over it. It also enables you to make behind the bar bends, meaning that you grab a string behind the bar with your pinky and ring finger and bend it. Makes a cool pedal steel type of sound.

So yeah, I like to play it occasionally. What is quite cool about it is that it makes Marshall ms2 sound quite good. When playing some rock and metal stuff through it with the usual electric guitar, it sounds quite crappy. But this really small, m
id range tone sounds awesome with the bluesy stuff. SO I could go busking with it. LOL
