Re: can anybody help me fitting a M.2 ssd?

ok i'm an idiot but we live and learn. all working fine now, no bios tweeking needed. just installed windows 10 on it and will spend the next few days yelling and getting annoyed while I reinstall everything and remember all my passwords but man is it running fast. read speed on this drive is 2200 and write is 2000, don't think i'm getting quite that but it's still way faster than my sata3 Kingston hyperX which ran at about 550 read I think. i'd swear the specs said 570 by 530 but anyway nice drive. @6 you rock. you described how to find the port and how to install it brilliantly.now if anybody wants to giggle at why i'm an idiot? read on and possibly good advice in here for anybody fitting one of these that's never done it before:so to start with, I was being impatient, never a good start. got annoyed that I couldn't get my hands in where I needed too, ended up pulling out the rear fan connector to help me get access to the screw you use to lock down the m.2 card, still couldn't get at it then after getting annoyed with how big my cooling system is figured the simple solution I should have thought of to start with was to take the video card out to give me some room. good move rite? ok so here's idiot move number 2:I should point out I was sober when I did this but it's the kind of stupid thing i'd have done when I was drunk. I investigated again, found the screw I needed to take out and out it came. fitted the card, put the screw in to lock it down, replaced the fan connector and fitted the video card. all good you'd think, but it didn't seem rite to me. and I was rite. computer pitched a fit when I booted it up and the video card wouldn't run. when I managed to get it to boot from my old drive it was acting crazy and lots of static on my sound card. I got annoyed again then after a few cigarettes and a beer I thought about it a bit and went back and had a look. I wondered this at the time but figured it was just the way it works. the screw I took out seemed rather too long and left the card at an angle. when I took it out again, my huntch was correct. bloody thing had a small screw at the top which was the one I was meant to take out and use to lock it down. so in short, i'd locked the thing down with it's tip against the motherboard making a nice metal contact. i'm amazed I didn't blow the hole board. but once I sorted that out, everything worked properly. so in short, don't be an impatient idiot and take time to work out what you're doing. again, thanks to @6 for the advice. i'd have never found where to plug it in without that advice.

Re: can anybody help me fitting a M.2 ssd?

ok fitted it. pain in the butt but managed. had to take the video card out to get at it because there was hardly any room. now I need somebody with eyes to help me fix the bios because it's not detecting my PCIE slots anymore.

Re: can anybody help me fitting a M.2 ssd?

@6 thanks for that, i'll have another look in a bit. I read somewhere if you set it rite in the bios it will leeve your sata ports working. I also read that you can fit it in to an adapter that plugs in to a PCI slot and gives better performance but the only slot I have left is my second PCIE 16 and i'm worried that might turn my video card in to an 8 instead of a 16 and slow it down.

Re: can anybody help me fitting a M.2 ssd?

On your motherboard, look above your graphics card for a horizontal slot that's about an inch wide. There'll be a mounting screw  about 3 or so inches  away from that slot, You'll have to unscrew that screw, slide the drive into the slot and then screw it down to the little standoff with the screw you just removed.Keep in mind that installing a PCIE drive will disable two of the motherboards SATA ports, so if your computer suddenly can't find it's boot drive this is why.

Re: can anybody help me fitting a M.2 ssd?

My ASUS board used to hide those under a removable slot that you first had to open so that the SSD won't get dirty or lose contact. Maybe you'll have to look out for such a slot as well.

Re: can anybody help me fitting a M.2 ssd?

Look up YouTube videos of your motherboard and they should include,  hint of what is the general area the storage device should go. For me mine was located a couple of slots below my graphics card

Re: can anybody help me fitting a M.2 ssd?

Does your board already have a drive attached? Detach and then attach the new drive. If not, you're generally looking at a rectangular-ish insert that is dependent on your board. It is however not a blade connector the way Apple does their drive. The best way is to look at the drive and see which end is the connection point, then attach it to the board.

can anybody help me fitting a M.2 ssd?

I've never met one of these beasties before but I just bought a 500gb m.2 ssd. I know my board will take one but I have no idea what the port on the board should feel like or how to fit it. if anybody could help it would save me taking the computer to a shop and paying them money for a 2 minute job. board is an asus z97-p if that helps. strange looking tiny thing. no cables involved. uses m.2 PCIE lanes.
