Re: A question about desktops

You need a monitor.  As soon as anything goes wrong where the audio isn't working, say default audio device changed or the machine isn't booting or whatever, you'll need someone sighted to be able to help you, and you can't do that if you decided to go without the monitor.Frankly, nowadays, laptops are basically as powerful as towers, and every time I look at the pricing on the "mobile workstations" vs. towers, I find that they're even closer.  If you don't already have a tv or something to be repurposed as a monitor, you might just want to upgrade the laptop, which has the additional benefit that it can go to class with you or whatever.

heh, my pc will go into headless mode even if I were to boot it up while my tv is turned off. The only way to have this system not booting into headless mode is to turn on my tv first then the pc after the tv booted.

This system will not have an OS on it. I will have to install it myself. I am happy the OCR statement turned out to be untrue. If my system will disable GPU rendering I will buy a null adapter and I will be good to go.

Re: A question about desktops

@5Resolution is set by the video card, which may depend on what the monitor supports. Whether the monitor is on or off doesn't change what the video card may be rendering in memory. The monitor displays whats in video memory, which is exactly what NVDA would be accessing, regardless of the state of the monitor. This in principle anyway, as I said some systems may disable graphics rendering in memory and go headless if no monitor is attached, likely seeing no purpose in graphics rendering with no display.

You can buy headless adapters to trick the system into thinking it has a monitor actually.

Re: A question about desktops

that doesn't work with NVDA. NVDA uses your monitor resolution to use OCR. If you don't have a monitor pluged inn, then no ocr.

Re: A question about desktops

A monitor just displays output of the system itself, even if a monitor itself were off, it should still display the data and OCR should function. Having said that though, some systems may be configured to stop rendering the display if no active monitor is detected, which you can get with raspberry pi's going into headless mode if no monitor is connected to the hdmi port. Either way, its probably better to have a monitor than not.

A question about desktops

2020-10-21 Thread AudioGames . net Forum — Off-topic room : Nuno via Audiogames-reflector

A question about desktops

Hi!Let me start by saying that I have never had a desktop. This is because I've spend all my life in a boarding school so the desktop would be of no use to me. But now the situation will change. Yeah, I'll be attending university but I'll have my own apartment so the desktop makes great sense now, yet I have some questions.1. I've heard a myth that the desktop absolutely requires monitor to boot, but is that true? Is that WIndows only requirementor what? My suspicions are that it's related to the GPU rather than a monitor, but I prefer to ask.2. How can I install the OS on the desktop that has no monitor? Is there a way to plug it into my current laptop, so the laptop can act as a screen and a way for me to OCR things?Sorry if my questions sound stupid, but as said, I have never had a desktop before.
