Re: A way for topic creators to close their topics for replies?

Well for the  record, you can already delete your own topics just by deleting the first post. I'm not myself a fan of topic closure being usable for the simple reason that I could see it being used by people to soapbox with impunity. "I think this so there!" and the topic gets closed because the starter would rather have the last word in the arguement than not. After all, topic closure is a moderation tool intended to stop drama, not contribute to said drama. As to moving to a new game topic, well there's no reason why an old topic should literally be closed. There's no problem with posting a new releases topic for a new version of a game rather than using the same one. Eg, if someone posted a "my new game" topic then a "my new game version 1.0" etc, the developer could also stick a note at the end of the old topic to indicate things were moving, just like the monthly chat topics in offtopic roll over. La
stly, for computer information, instructions and specific guides, well that's what we have the Articles room for. So, while I do see the arguement in favour of this, I'm not personally sure it's a necessary function, and might if misused be a rather destructive one.

Re: A way for topic creators to close their topics for replies?

The bottom line is, it wold more than likely require custom modification of the forum software to get the feature, and just look how long it's taking to fix the profile editor here. Going on 5 months and no solution in site. So, as useful a feature as it sounds, it'll probably be a long time before it's live, if it ever gets there.Don't get me wrong, it sounds like it would be a useful feature and I'm all for it. I'm just saying that I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for it.

Re: A way for topic creators to close their topics for replies?

But you also have to consider something: Say someone's created a game, but is working on a new version and hints would like to close the topic of the old one but leave it there for viewsers. Also, yes, if topics go sideways but there is still a useful answer. For example someone asks a programming question that another forum member also has. The topic creator could close their topic when they got the desired answer, and it would be archived for any other forum member to use the search feature.

Re: A way for topic creators to close their topics for replies?

One forum I used to post in allowed topic starters to delete their topic regardless of whether it had replies or not. That was very handy when a topic went sideways.

A way for topic creators to close their topics for replies?

Hi all,I think this should be a good idea, if someone creates a topic on the forum and they don't want further replies, but would still like it to stay there.

Re: A way for topic creators to close their topics for replies?

Hello,I think the main problem with that is the topic would very quickly disappear due to it not getting any replies, and the forum displaying topics by the date of when the last post was.

Re: A way for topic creators to close their topics for replies?

I like the idea, simply because if you started a topic with one intention, and it disintegrated into drama or something undesirable, you wouldn't need to wait for a moderator to fix it.  Posters should have some control of their content, with moderators having the final say for consistency.

Re: A way for topic creators to close their topics for replies?

I've used quite a few forum packages and administered some of them. The only thing along this line I've ever seen is that the topic starter could delete their topic if there were no replies.I believe it would probably take some custom coding to make closing your topics an available option to regular forum members.
