Re: Accessible Treadmill?

This apartment complex doesn't have a life guard, people under 18,kids, aren't allowed to use the pool without adult supervision.I suspect the apartment complex is afraid of getting sued if someone got hurt. Especially when you consider that, here in the US, people are so inclined to sue over the littlest things. That was my thought, since I'd be swimming for exercise, all I'd need is a lane to myself.Even though it infringed on my rights and was basically outright discrimination, I decided that I didn't want to make a big issue out of it, and just dropped the idea.

Re: Accessible Treadmill?

Actually Gean, sinse I used to scuba I really  don't see the pool safety thing, indeed before various circumstances back when i was doing my degree and before the pool closed I used to swim each week. Basically I'd mark out one lane for myself, usually the left or right hand side of the pool and just go up and down there, not causing an issue. So long as I had my hand in contact with the wall it wasn't a problem for anyone else. The only major issue from my perspective was getting in and out of the pool, which I did by the simple expedient of  learning my way around first and taking my cane from the changing rooms to the wall by the side of the pool, the fact that they had a mat on the side of the pool helped as well. Of course as with most british public pools there was a life guard on duty, but it wouldn't specifically have mattered if not. I actually miss swimming, I really wish I were rich enough to own a house with a private po
ol that I could use alone for myself, that would be perfect, but using a public pool or any shared pool with other people really wouldn't be good right now.

@Ambro, it's not a full sized trampoline, only a small one. I run on the spot and put one hand on the wall. being as the surface is springy I can lift my knees up which means the running is far harder than usual, I then do various exercises with a set of hand weights as I said which gets a good workout. A rowing machine is certainly an option, though personally I do rather like the variety of a 10 minute run lus then various things with the weights.

Re: Accessible Treadmill?

Before I lost my vision, I used to stay in shape by swimming a mile every week. Unfortunately, the only swimming pool I have access to is the one owned by the apartment complex I live in and they won't allow me to use their pool for safety and liability reasons, so they claim.Because the grocery store next door closed, I'll be moving next month to a new apartment that is next door to a grocery store. The new apartment will be almost twice as big as the apartment I'm currently in, that should leave plenty of room for some kind of exercise equipment. The downside is that this new apartment complex is smaller than the one I'm currently in so they don't have a swimming pool. But considering that they'd probably have the same objections about me using their pool, it's probably not that big a loss.Even if I had access to a pool, I'd still want something else for those times of the year when it's too cold for swimming.
My second choice is some kind of exercise equipment, preferably one that provides a reasonably good upper and lower body workout.I have used them in the past when nothing else was available, but I've never really cared much for free weights. Thus my preference for some kine of exercise equipment. My goals are pretty simple, I'm not looking to be muscle bound like Arnold Schwarzenegger, I just want a way to maintain a healthy level of fitness, without a lot of fuss or equipment. For a while I considered a Bowflex Tred climber, but it has an electronic control panel that is made like the control panel on a microwave. To find the controls, I'd have to have a sighted person put some kind of self stick buttons on them, and then there'd be the problem of reading the displays. The electronic control panel was just one reason why I eventually decided against the Tread Climber. The other reason was that I had doubts about its ability to exercise the
upper body. From when I could still see, it has what resembles ssnow ski poles to exercise the arms. The way they were attached to the Tread Climber, they looked like an option rather than an integral part of the exercise. They're also quite expensive, starting at around 2,000 US Dollars. So far, a rowing machine or something similar seems to be my best option.

There are anti discrimination laws here in the US, and if I wanted to I could take them to task and gain access to the pool. The trouble is, I can easily understand where they are coming from. I can easily imagine situations that would be caused by my blindness that wouldn't be safe for me or other swimmers. If I owned the space to do it, I'd get one of those endless pools. If you've never heard of them, think of a treadmill you swim in instead of jog on.

Re: Accessible Treadmill?

Swimming a liabilitynut's nuts! indeed I completed a deal of basic scuba training as a teenager so god knows on that one, if it were the Uk you could take someone to the cleaners over that. Then again, annoyingly for various personal reasons due to my genophobia swimming has been out for me for years even when I've stayed somewhere with a pool, though I am a little jealous of efectively having a pool in the place where you live even so. A lot of running and stair machines don't do upper body it's true. The reason however I use free hand weights is that sinse my mum is a physio therapist, I've been able to work out five or six different exercises with them that actually do give an all around work out to different muscle groups, though I do the ten minute sprint to get some aerobic exercise in there as well. I do it partly for personal fitness, and mostly because that actually helps considerably with singing, indeed you'd be surprise
d just how much muscle it takes to sing (not all of Pavaroti was fat).I'll also say that while I'm not exactly Hulk Hogan myself, I'm not really wee willy weedy either and once I start exercising I do tend to build up muscles, as indeed I am at the moment.

Several months back I decided that the safest way for me to exercise would be to use some kind of exercise equipment so I could remain stationary while exercising.I did some searching and ran across an article that basically said that there weren't any exercise machine that were designed to be accessible to blind people. So the best choice would be something that doesn't use any electronic controls, or one that uses physical buttons like the treadmills described by a couple of people here.I've thought of getting a treadmill, or an exercise bike, but I wanted something that would exercise both the upper and lower body. After some thought, I've decided to get a rowing machine. There's even rumor of one that can be connected to a computer via USB to get your performance statistics. That would be nice, but not needed as I plan to measure my progress by the number of repetitions I can complete in a given amount of time. Low tech, but v
 ery accessible.

Hi Dark, I would to ask you, how you can run in a trampoline? It is small so if you run you will go to the edge of the trampoline and you have to go back and forth to run.For the exercise, after long long researches for the best home gagget to buy, I like very much the rowing machine. It's the only gagget that is used also by agonistic atlete (no agonistic runner will train themself in the treadmill because is easier than the real running). And with rowing you can train 80% of your muscle.

I've seen one or two with nets around them. I think--though I have no idea if this is the least bit true--this might be a relatively (as in, the past ~12-14 years) recent thing, in response to some minor scare about injury rates on netless trampolines. I don't remember encountering any with nets prior to... I really don't recall which year, specifically, but am pretty sure it was no earlier than 2002, and no later than 2006. I'm thinking 2004, but not sure.As to the original question, I'm guessing most centers for blind people will have accessible equipment, so if you're willing to ask someone who works there what types they have, they might be able to get you some useful information.

Dark, you're super smart. I was just hoping somebody knew of a model so I could buy it off Amazon and avoid talking to people in general. Guess it's a Walmart trip for me to either scope out a model to order or buy it then and there. I don't really want a non-electric model because the one I tried a long time ago made me work harder to walk and move the belt. With the electric ones, I just keep my fingers lightly on the front bar so it doesn't run away from me. I wanted to use it for running. I'm not sure how an indoor exercise trampoline would work. I was aiming for fast running and jogging, plus incline changes. There's only so much cardio I can get in with my guide dog. She's a lazy, out-of-shape office dog now, so she's panting and tired after ten blocks!

@Cinnamon, the miniture trampoline is more a matter of noise reduction than anything else sinse it's better than running on the bare floor, plus is more springy so when running you can lift your knees high and thus make things harder. I think they're actually made for this, or at lleast I wouldn't want to try jumping on one sinse I'd probably knock myself out on the cieling, nor could I guarantee to hit the rather small surface area of the mini trampoline on the way down :d.I do a ten minute sprint, which is short but pretty intensive, sinse Reever gets at least a 40 minute walk a day anyway standard walking isn't really the object and I don't particularly have the patience for long runs anyhow, though ten minutes intensive sprint plus about 20 minutes doing various different things with my weights each day is a pretty good workout.Oh, and buying a device to do inclines would be sort of a waste of time given that Durham is pretty mu

Re: Accessible Treadmill?

You know, maybe you could get an eliptical, those things are way more intense than tred mills, plus, while they do have controls, you most likely won't need them if you get the non electric ones, which aren't as bad as the non electric tredmills since you can adjust the resistance, and if you loosen it up all the way, its not much effort at all to get it going, but its like stair climbing, which is more intense. And the controls are really for counting calories, which you won't need to do, since you'll friggin feell the burn for sure! Also, its a compromize on noise, since its not going clomp clomp with feet on the tredmill.I wouldn't want to try sprinting on a trampoline because I'd be afraid I'd run right off it and break my neck, but I have jumped on them before. As a kid, my cousin's friend had one near their pool so it was like a poor man's diving board, but yeah, still fun.If you do want to check into ellipticals, ju
st make sure you get one that doesn't need to be plugged in, or batteries for the computer to actuate the resistance, you want one with a resistance knob that is fully mechanical. The one I used for a while had clicks too, so you could easily get a routine, start here, increase X number of clicks once you get warmed up, etc. You actually want to warm up before you get on them since its like instant action.

My only thing is there is no feedback to know if you're slowing yourself down or not, the electric ones keep you at the same pace, and if you start to slow down, you know because you move back the belt and your arms stretch out. Also the electric ones, at least some of them, offer an incline option, which is good, although high impact. so yeah, just like you said, you need one that is button controlled, I used to use one that was like big green start button, big red stop button, then like plus and minus right under those, and then up and down for the incline somewhere around there. And that one was foldable too, so something like that.

Re: Accessible Treadmill?

I'm afraid I just run on a small indoor trampoline myself, so can't exactly help I've never been one for the gadgets associated with exercise, indeed I only bought the trampoline to run on because when I was no longer in a ground floor room in colidge but an upstairs flat I didn't want to give my downstairs neighbors a headache by running on the spot . I also have two sets of hand held weights that I do various things with each day (there are some advantages to having a mother who's a physiotherapist). It's rather minimal but it definitely works. So, if you can't find what you want in terms of electrics, there are alternatives.

Accessible Treadmill?

Accessible Treadmill?

Hi all,I'm looking to buy a home treadmill with controls I can actually use. Amazon doesn't give very detailed descriptions. Obviously menu screens are bad. Flat control buttons are fine; I can stick braille on those. It needs to be control driven, and not menu based. Does anybody have a brand recommendation? I can always get a ride to Walmart and scope them out in person, but i'd rather just do it myself. Thanks!
