Re: Anyone know what's up with Draconis?

Hello,I think if Draconis were to release something this year, I get the feeling its going to be pretty big. My current thought is that they might aim for a simultaneous platform release for some sort of remake of one of their older titles, possibly Alien Outback or Dyna Man, or my second thought is that they might be working on something completely new to surprise us, possibly with a staggered platform release. The reason I predict this is due to the fact that their last two games were quite simple, and I still think that their engine is, in a way, being tested, thus I think another remake would be the way to go at this time, but I also think itd be awesome to get one released on iOS. I dont think theyll go the way of Bavisoft, particularly as theyve been working hard building this engine by all accounts, the fact they got it ready for mac, windows, and due to DoItWrite, I believe also iOS too, could really prove interesting for the future
. Remember tha these devs have lives too and as weve seen, Josh has been writing, so maybe game development ahs been put aside for a little bit while he works on the book (or books?)

Re: Anyone know what's up with Draconis?

Josh sent this message to the Audyssey list in December 2013 about Windows vs Mac sales:For ChangeReaction 2, which is admittedly not the best test case since a previous version existed for Windows but not for Mac, here is what we saw:In the first month of availability, ChangeReaction2 for Mac sold roughly the same number of copies as the original Change Reaction did in its first three years on Windows. ChangeReaction2 for Windows, released in April, has yet to reach what ChangeReaction2 for Mac did in its first week.SilverDollar, which is a slightly better test case, given it is extremely inexpensive and did not exist, at least not in its entirety, for either platform previously, has been available for Mac since January, and for Windows since June. The Windows version has sold, in five months, less-than a quarter of the number of sales we got for Mac in the first month.I’m sure, too, that the ease of purchase/installation for Mac also plays a part. Purchasing games for Windows is, and will continue to be, a pain in the neck.On iOS development: We have released our first title last month and have more in development.DoItWrite for iPhone, an educational tool and practice game for mastering the shapes of uppercase letters, lowercase letters, and numbers for use with VoiceOver’s new handwriting feature in iOS 7.

Re: Anyone know what's up with Draconis?

CX2, interesting enough I have been saying much the same thing for a long time. Maintaining the VB runtimes and continuing to develop games using them is a losing proposition in the long term. We are already seeing issues cropping up on Windows 8.1, and sadly there does not seem to be anyway of getting some of our older developers to look at more modern alternatives. Of course, the main problem is a general attitude of if it isnt broke dont fix it which is a way a few developers feel about it.For example, while I have the utmost respect for Jim Kitchen as a game developer and enjoy his games he still is a tad bit frustrating because he continues to use XP personally and still develops everything in VB 6. As someone who has since moved on from those technologies I am concerned that sooner or later there will come a day where none of his games will be compatible with Windows or will encounter some sort of runtime issues that cant be fixed w
ithout a substantial rewrite all because the guy is still hanging on to tech from the late 90s and early 2000s with no apparent motivation to move beyond that. I have a feeling he wont change until he has to upgrade for one reason or another to a modern system and finds that his games have technical issues and require major rewrites or upgrades. Until that day comes well just have to deal with the situation as is.In any case I have been saying since 2006 or so that game developers should be investing time and energies in something like C# .NET, VB .NET, or something else with very little to show for it. It has largely fallen on deaf ears. So I have given up trying to talk to our audio game devs because I have discovered they will do whatever they want to do no matter what I do or dont say.

Re: Anyone know what's up with Draconis?

Fair point, though I specifically meant using the .net framework instead of the VB6 runtime components. In either case it would require work but so does making a program designed to use the VB6 runtimes run happily on modern versions of Windows, in the long run the VB runtimes are a losing proposition and itll take increasing amounts of work with every new iteration of Windows to keep them running while introducing more and more problems like with VipMud and the insistence on keeping the script files in the program directory.

Re: Anyone know what's up with Draconis?

cx2, actually, upgrading programs from VB 6 to VB .NET can be quite a major undertaking. While VB .NET shares the basic syntax and coding conventions as VB 6 the languages are fairly different in all other respects and requires massive amounts of rewritten code. So dont presume it would be an easy transition. For one thing most audio games written in VB 6 use the DX8VB.dll COM wrapper for DirectX. That library is no longer developed or supported on modern Windows. Therefore In order to support a modern OS and newer versions of DirectX above 8 one would have to completely rewrite the DirectX code from scratch to support a modern DirectX wrapper such as SlimDX. Thats just one example of how complex the conversion from VB 6 to VB .NET would be, and is fairly time consuming to boot.

I dont think its busy people so much as one busy person. Like most audio game companies Draconis is pretty much one guy, Josh de Lioncourt, in his spare time. Thats why the output of so many audio game devs has such an inconsistent release rate.Still at least unlike certain other devs, cough, Draconis arent clinging to massively outdated runtimes in order to make their games work.

Re: Anyone know what's up with Draconis?

Pretty much I meant GMA yes, it shouldnt be that hard to upgrade from VB6 to VB .net and use the .net frameworks in place which have already proved themselves in at least a couple of audio games.I dont recall whether Josh may have been writing a sequel as well or not. Truth be told it takes a lot to get my interest in high fantasy, I dont dislike the genre as such I just feel its overpopulated, so Id pretty much forgotten about Haven Lost.

Hi all,Does anyone know whats going on with Draconis Entertainment? I submitted a ticket at the help desk because I can no longer post scores in Pinball Extreme. I get an error when trying to post scores to the boards. I also asked them if we were going to see anything from this year, cause its been awhile since that Do It Write or what ever it was called was released. I submitted this ticket over two weeks ago, and have heard nothing back from them. Im not sure whats up.
