Re: Anyone tried the new Voiceover UI recognition feature?

I tried it with the main stream version of UNO, and it didn't work, at least, not for playing the actual game.It reads names of the NPCs, but that's about it.Oh and once you turn on direct touch, forget about it even working at all. Then again, direct touch treats it like VO isn't even running so that's probably to be expected.

Re: Anyone tried the new Voiceover UI recognition feature?

I certainly don't know what this topic turned into, but @41 that's pretty much where I've seen the recognition feature shine the most. For smaller accessibility hangups like unlabeled, or even unrecognized, buttons it seems to really help. I haven't really pllayed around with completely inaccessible apps yet, but would love to hear from anyone who has. The image descriptions are pretty nice though. They've gotten quite a bit more detailed than they used to be, and I've actually found them to be slightly useful. As far as companies and collecting data goes, there's no way of avoiding it today. Whoever you decide to run to will be collecting data period. (regardless of what you opt out of) And sadly it looks like they'll be valuing more from it exponentially than you'll be valuing from the service they provide in return. Data is the new currency.

Re: Anyone tried the new Voiceover UI recognition feature?

I should have predicted this would happen haha . I don't have an iPhone, I have an iPad, but I don't use it much. I am not a fan of Voiceover and the gestures or just didn't get used to it. I generally love Apple's designs though, it's fancy and slick. All my setup is pretty much Google and since their company model is based on selling data, must it be aggregated, I kind of accepted that I was using nice products that don't cost much in exchange. On that front I prefer Microsoft, they collect data, but their users are actually their revenue (sure there is a small portion of advertising, but it's really minimal), so they really care about privacy, because they must. When they use collected data, it's to improve the user's experience to make you want to pay them more or stay with them.Anyway, when I saw that article about Apple screen recognition, I was super hyped, but I figured it wasn't as good as they would say it. I can see that being useful in some apps that are partially accessible, like when there are a few unlabeled buttons and such. I was wondering if it would work on games that are totally inaccessible, where it's just 2D rendering and nothing is exposed to the screen-reader?Thanks everyone for the great info, even when it got derailed into a Android vs iOS debate, I learned a thing or two. Let's keep it civilized and while I agree that Apple clearly have done wrong things in the past, I believe in this case that they needed AI hardware acceleration. I will check the CSR out, looks neat.

That will depend largely on the game in question and how fast you need your speech feedback, if you even need it at all. Generally, if you have a moderatley fast net, when using CSR's virtual screen, you won't even notice much of a delay.

@29, no. No they really don't, no more than regular android does, anyway. And if you know what you're doing, flashing a custom rom is actually really easy. And if you install, say, lineage and root, the latter of which has no negative consequences at this point because you've already voided your warranty unlocking your bootloader, you can just go ahead and adb uninstall whatever you want gone. That won't necessarily completely remove all modern packages,, but it will disable them and remove any data assosiated with them, if nothing else.Regarding the safetynet check, magisk has ways of bypassing this. It won't necessarily always work, but it's something.

Firstly netflix doesn't work because of you not passing saftynett check. And one more thing. Flashing roms on an android device isn't fun trust me. The good thing about samsung though is that you can revert back to stock at any time by flashing stock rom via odin.

Re: Anyone tried the new Voiceover UI recognition feature?

Espeak can and has been packaged with talkback. Take a look at nashcentral.org, the guy up there has a copy of talkback with espeak you can flash using TWRP. I'd imagine this could be packaged as an APK if desired, and of course a rom could realistically include this as part of the default install.I haven't exactly done much research on the matter, but I'd imagine something similar can be done with CSR, though you'd need to somehow configure it first. You might have an easier time with spiel, yeah, you actually heard that right, although it's, minimalistic at best, even the new version with modern android support.I'm not sure how up to date the AOSP copy of talkback is, but it has commits from fairly recently, and I highly doubt that contains any telemetry. People would fucking rip it apart. So yeah, possible. Not practical, but doable. Although, someone using an IPhone really should give 0 fucks about their privacy at this point anyway, for fairly obvious reasons. Google are really no worse than just about any other big company, and they're certainly better than microsoft if you use win 10. Haha, there's another thought.

Re: Anyone tried the new Voiceover UI recognition feature?

Whether I want or don't want to use Talkback is irrelevant, because due to my disability I am forced to setup my device that way at least, so there is no choice really. I doubt you could flash CSR at that point, and even if you could, you'd still have no way to enable it on the setup wizard. Nice to see that it works though, you'll most likely need to flash some other TTS. I have no idea what is minimalistic enough to work at that point, ESpeak needs to install voice data the first time it is launched, rest are paid engines, but who knows, there might be something lite enough to do the job.

@20 oh right, when you are wrong, then you simply say it was just a joke and we should lighten up.Yes, of course you could uninstall all Google play services, but first of all be realistic and realize that more than 70 percent of their user base isn't skilled or interested enough to do that, and second and more important, good luck getting Talkback to speak to you that way. I'm not saying it's impossible, just a few years ago when I tried such an experiment I wasn't getting any luck.More important though, this isn't an Android VS iOS topic. I really get it that you are disappointed that there isn't a tiny piece of OCR in Talkback, so am I, but we can brag about Android in some other topics and other areas where it really deserves praising.

See, here's the thing about that.Google know things if you *let* them know things. You could really, really easily uninstall all google play services and install F droid, CSR or shine + or whatever, hell, even flash a completely custom rhom if you so desire. And guys, you seriously, seriously think apple doesn't spy on you too? Do you honestly believe a word of their hole we care about your privacy whatever motto?Oh, and speaking of not doing research? Commentary uses an external API for it's OCR, not controled by them. Actually you have a series of engines to choose from. Maybe it's time for somebody to do some research?Oh and, yeah, I'll fully admit I was wrong about apple's OCR. I mean, I still think it's highly likely that it is indeed possible on lower end CPU's, but obviously there's no proofe for that, so I'll let it be. I do find it somewhat amusing that redfox of all people is lecturing me on how *I* conduct myself on the forum.Guys? This was all 1 massive joke, I swear! Y'all need to lighten up.

Seriously @16? You think you're in control of Android? Google has all your data, all the porn vids you watch, including what your mom said to you the other night, + whatever conversation you were having with your nonexistent gf last night, Google knows, + csr's OCR is cloud based, so they have your screenshots too!

@12What @6 is referring to, can be found at https://github.com/nirenr/jieshuo/releases/The premium version of Commentary (Jieshuo), has said Virtual Scren/OCR feature. Regardless of which one ya prefer, whether it being VoiceOver or Jieshuo's method of screen virtualization, it'll always be subjective.

I'm sorry, buy @8. You come off... really angry for some reason. What you're saying is unfounded at best, and inflamatory at worst. Even if you're right, which you're not, that's not a very good way to conduct yourself.

Re: Anyone tried the new Voiceover UI recognition feature?

@8Agreed with other posters. Apple is the last company that needs defending against the claims of milking money from their customers, but this is very loosely related. The requirement of newer hardware in this case is literally only because the older chips don't support the on device machine learning that they take advantage of. At least bash with relevancy.

Re: Anyone tried the new Voiceover UI recognition feature?

Yep, it says it in the article I linked. They needed to have AI hardware acceleration to be able to pull this off with tenths of seconds response time.@Angel, can you tell me more on that "virtual screen on CSR" you referred to? A quick google search didn't seem to point me in the right direction. Do you have a link? It looks interesting.

Re: Anyone tried the new Voiceover UI recognition feature?

@8 not doing any research, as usual, resorts to bashing. If you did only a little bit of it though, you'd figure out that the Voiceover OCR is not online and cloud based in any way, and does it using the new machine learning technologies, available only on the latest generations of processors. Because yes, Apple definitely has billions to squeeze out of those rich, and way too many Voiceover users.

Yeah, with angel on this one. Also, OCR like that should *not* require an A12 / newer, this is just another pathetic way for apple to squeeze money out of consumers.

Re: Anyone tried the new Voiceover UI recognition feature?

In my opinion it is good enough, but Virtual screen on CSR is better, also works on even the cheapest of the android devices, you just, well, need premium, which sucks, but I would rather pay 17 dollars a year, 30 per 2 and 43 per 3 and a cheap phone than to get a newer iPhone since it is better and aparrently clicks on anything and everything.

Re: Anyone tried the new Voiceover UI recognition feature?

I've tried it on a number of apps now, and the results weren't quite as exciting as I thought. Of course this kind of functionality is going to be a work in progress for a long time, but it only seems to work on apps with interfaces that are already very simplistic to begin with. Not only that, but it also seems to make apps that are already accessible more difficult to use as a result of relocating various elements. If anyone has examples where this feature works very well, I'd be glad to hear about them because I'm not as impressed as I would like to be.

I read an article about Voiceover using AI to recognize UI elements and make them actionable with Voiceover (on iOS): https://techcrunch.com/2020/12/03/iphon … ccounter=1Is it out yet? Anyone tried it? Is it as amazing as they make it sound? Does that unlock new games to be accessible?
