Re: Audio game jam - No Video Jam starts August 14

To address questions about judging:In order to judge, you will need to create an itch.io account. Voting is completely public, so you don't need to join the jam to participate. Once the jam is over, a submissions page will become available with all of the games. From there you can view submissions, read their artist's statements, and rate them in a variety of categories.I will also create a new thread in the New Releases subforum that will present an alphabetical list of all submissions. This will give visibility to the new games for forum members who don't frequent this thread and encourage them to vote. It will have further instructions about voting. Developers can of course create their own threads; it will just be a central place to learn more and discuss jam submissions as players instead of developers.Voting will last for one week. During this time you'll be able to rate games in a variety of categories and leave comments. The winner will be chosen based on the overall ratings, whatever the community decides, which itch.io makes pretty transparent. My hope is that it's not a popularity contest, but based directly on what you want more of from audio games. No matter who wins, I'm super excited to hear what you all create, and I'm sure that it will give us things to discuss for years to come.

@nolanThe fields are set up weird. It's like typing into Google but only being allowed to select from the search suggestions. I don't know about Orca, but in NVDA I was able to press down arrow to browse the options and then enter to select. They're not in any order. To type freely in the box, I had to press NVDA+space to switch focus modes, and press enter to insert that tag. To browse the suggestions after typing a few characters, you'll need to switch focus modes, press down arrow, and enter to select (like typing "horror" gives the suggestions "horror", "survival horror", and "psychological horror"). Hope this helps!

@86, 87:Glad to have you both here to judge! Don't worry about not having controllers; you're not required to play and rate all the games (but it would be excellent if you could). Ideally our developers will create keyboard control schemes for folks without controllers. On itch.io there's a way to tag the different types of inputs a game supports. If it's not possible to filter these on the submissions page, then you'll be able to find this info on the individual game pages and play what you can.

Same here I don't have a controler. One thing to note is I will be going on holiday for a couple days, that means I will miss the start of the jam, thats not a problem because no one will probably be completing anything till the end of the week so I will still be able to judge.I do not have a controler either though and am not sure if its worth spending the cash on getting one.I would really like a wired unit, and while yes I can probably buy a wireless one with reciever from microsoft I will need something like a gamepad if I get one because thats about all I can afford.

Re: Audio game jam - No Video Jam starts August 14

Your approach sounds great, @nolan! My take on game jams is that nothing we do in life is final. As indies we build things the best we can at the time. It's very punk in the sense that it can be sloppy as long as it has passion (paraphrasing Kurt Cobain). If we like what we make or it gains a following, then we can revise and develop it further, but that's part of a journey beyond the scope of a jam. So I'll judge our success based on that.

Re: Audio game jam - No Video Jam starts August 14

@81 FWIW I definitely hear and understand your concerns. That said, we kind of get what we get in such a gaming niche.FWIW, I'm a software developer trying to stretch his skills a bit. Learning some sound design, reading up on game theory, and on how it relates to balance in game design. I think it's fair to say that *any* indie game developer works with what they have, and learns where they can. As such, maybe identifying as a developer isn't too bad. For my part, I'll be adding a marketing survey into my game if I create one. If folks like it, I'll leave the free game jam version up permanently as a gift to the community, and build a more fleshed-out commercial version where I might be willing to pay sound designers and such to improve it. So that's another possibility here.

Re: Audio game jam - No Video Jam starts August 14

Most likely the tracing is off. The auto-tiling appears to be stuck at something like 32 by 32, and the outlining tool is wonky. I'm not altogether certain if that could be a rounding issue or not, like the difference between 0 and 1 as a starting point. Do you know which colored tiles are 17 height? It could potentially be safe to disregard that and write 17 height as 16 for all intents and purposes for the time being.edit: Ok, it is a funky rounding issue. Tile 1 is Green in the upper right, so 16x, 0y. But the height needs to be registered as 17y for it to encompass the whole tile. Same for tile 2, which is yellow in the upper left. For Red tile 3 the height has to be 15 or the border will overlap yellow tile 2. The trick here, if that because the upper left is 0,0, if you subtract the outline it will move the bottom of the tile outline UP, so it will still overlap yellow tile 2. So you have to increase its Y position to 17 to account for that. Same with black tile 4.Edit edit: I created a new tileset project which you can grab [here] which uses 32 by 32 tiles. Checking the *.tres for the tileset it seems it doesn't have the same kind of rounding issue at that size.

Re: Audio game jam - No Video Jam starts August 14

@65 Quick question about this tilemap you created:Looks like I can't create them on my own because the editor interface is entirely inaccessible. Was at least hoping I could arrow through a tree of defined tiles and enter properties manually. Thankfully I should be able to create one programatically, but looking at the .tres file I see:...
1/name = "tiles.png 1"
...
1/region = Rect2( 16, 0, 16, 17 )Looking at the Rect2 docs, the 4-argument constructor which this resource definition calls is defined like so:Rect2 ( float x, float y, float width, float height )Any idea why some of these are 17 pixels high? Figured they'd be 16X16. I'd eventually like to be able to fire up BrushTone, create tiles of any color, then programatically generate the tilesets myself. But I'm not sure if there's some PNG artifact going on here, if your tracing in the editor was slightly off, etc. Not a criticism, I'm just trying to reverse-engineer the format. And your examples of collision shapes/transforms are very helpful, since all I'm going to want are squares, and now I know how those should ultimately look. Thanks again.

@nolanI created a new issue requesting more keyboard shortcuts in the WYSIWYG editor. In it I included a list of known shortcuts that I found through trial-and-error, and a list of suggested shortcuts. You'll be happy to know that there are shortcuts for inserting lists (Ctrl+Shift+7 for numbered, Control+Shift+8 for unordered).Issue #1097: Expand WYSIWYG keyboard shortcutsHere's an existing issue about expanding Markdown support on itch.io. I just commented to add my support.Issue #607: Markdown support

Cool, please post an issue link here if you open one. I also just tried clicking the HTML button and pasting in HTML, but that doesn't seem to work. I'm using Orca under Linux, and there appear to be some issues that make navigating to the individual buttons with the review cursor problematic. So if you can't figure it out by the time I see if Orca can manage it, I'll either pile onto your issue or file my own. Thanks!

@nolanI don't believe that the itch.io editor has keyboard shortcuts for lists. It does for bold (Control+B), italic (Control+I), and links (Control+K). For other functions I'm having trouble tabbing to the toolbar or getting it read aloud with NVDA (like to switch to HTML editing mode to manually input the lists). I fear this feature is inaccessible. I'll look into it further and open an issue on their GitHub if I can't get it to work.

Re: Audio game jam - No Video Jam starts August 14

Does anyone know if the Itch editor has keyboard shortcuts? This shouldn't be a showstopper for the jam, but I'm having some issues entering text for my own project and figure we should probably hash those out here, if possible. In particular, I've written a Markdown description in my game's README, and have set about pasting it in at various places. While there's apparently an option to make the Itch editor support Markdown, it may only work on typing, and not on pasting.I'm trying to add a list, and am wondering if keyboard shortcuts are supported? Googling, and poking randomly, hasn't revealed anything. Is it possible to insert rich formatting into game descriptions and such without having to manually type them in?I'm going to investigate whether any browser extensions exist to paste text in slowly vs. all at once. Maybe that will fool the editor into formatting my text as Markdown rather than as plain. But any other suggestions are welcome.

Uh, well Godot is... wierd. There isn't any obvious setting for defining a scene's size, though I suppose thats determined by the size of the tiles in relation to the anchor point, which in this case is in the upper left corner as 0,0. The projects put together though which you can download [here].There are 4 horizontal rows one on top of the other, 10 tiles wide, 0,0 being the upper left corner of the scene. So the rows extend to the right and down relative to the anchor point of 0,0. Green and Yellow are collision colors, Red and Black are not. The rows start as Green, Yellow, Red, then Black. Beneath them is a 10 by 10 tile empty space, and below that is a 10 by 10 box of tiles. The border of each part of the area is a different color, so a square of Red, then a square of green, square of black, square of yellow, then square of red again. The tileset is a small 32 by 32 image with 16 by 16 tiles arranged with yellow in the upper left, green in the upper right, red in the lower left, and black in the lower right.Hope this helps.

But point taken, I'm just trying to get a starting point to do those types of experiments.Edit" by which I mean, I think it may combine individual tiles into single collision bodies. But if not, I've written that code before and can do it again, no problem.

@60If Godot is doing tiles via bounding boxes, it is possible, possibly even probable, that the internal collision detection algorithms aren't optimized for the unit tile case.  Be careful of this.  I'd find out what it's using for collision and work backward from there. In particular Box2d will eat upwards of 20MB of ram for small tile maps represented as 1 box per tile, and you have to sort of compile it into bigger boxes.

Re: Audio game jam - No Video Jam starts August 14

@55 Thanks a bunch, and I hope it goes without saying, but don't sink lots and lots of time into this. I can always do something non-tile-based if needed.I don't think I'd need a big map to get a sense for the format. Maybe solid rows of 2 different colors so I can see how contiguous rows of the same tile are formatted. Then maybe an open square with no tiles in the open space, and another with different tiles in the open space, so I've got those to reference. The size of the open squares doesn't matter, neither does the length of the rows. I'm just having a hard time understanding how the format works, and the examples I've found are all way more complicated than I need. Also, since I'm aiming for uniform square tiles, I don't know whether the collision boxes I see in the examples are for actual squares, or if someone took the trouble to trace around custom tile borders. So I'm hesitant to just copy-paste examples I find and hope they're what I want. And yeah, this would be in Godot's native format since I eventually want to create an accessible tile editor. Thanks again.

I'll be happy to provide high quality legal sound effects and music resources and do some collecting and editing of them too, time permitting, though I would classify my editing skills as basic.I can also help test games, I have a Windows 10 laptop with mid range specs made within the last 5 years, and I can use NVDA, JAWS, or Narrator for screen reader related testing.I've tested for AHC and Park Boss in the past, and contributed lots of bug reports to public projects like The Vale and Warsim, and I've played most of the well known audio games, starting at the age of 7.I'm willing to work with any team who can communicate effectively and seems dedicated to completing the jam.You can reach me atsuperfr...@gmail.comand I can give you contact details for voice and text chat if we both seem interested.

I'm happy to take part, I've been on a slump anyway and came around here looking for inspiration. Caveat, I can't commit to the whole week, and I work, so it'll be spare time stuff for me. So I'm probably better off joining someone else's team.

Well for anyone interested.I can previde you with a tester and such. Also, I have available an amd ryzen5 system with 16gb ram and a video card nothing much but I can always run stuff and things.Though saying that I am all accross the other side of the world not in the us but whatever if you want a little resource during the jam I can probably previde it.Just as long as it aint malware like of course, noncompiled bgt code will run without windows defender flagging it and I can probably run other things.I have allready got python, and node on here for my electron tests, but nothing much else.

Re: Audio game jam - No Video Jam starts August 14

So, rows of red, yellow, green, and black? Is there any particular number of each row, or order of rows? Any horizontal or vertical orientation? Number of tiles per row, or individual tiles? I'm also assuming its should be saved in whatever Godots project format is, yes? Part of the issue running Godot I suspect is largely hardware/software related, but as I said I may be able to find other sources to meet your requirements.

Re: Audio game jam - No Video Jam starts August 14

@53 No biggy if you can't, was just a thought. I was thinking a tileset with 16X16 tiles of solid colors: red, yellow, green, black. The red and yellow tiles would have square collision boxes, while the green and black wouldn't.Then a tilemap with, say, a row of each tile would give me a sense for how Godot formats three things: tiles with collision boxes, tiles without collision boxes, and rows of tiles on a tilemap. I could then try programatically generating tiles, and use what I've learned to either procedurally generate maps, or to create a native accessible tilemap editor for godot-accessibility.I've gotten Godot running in a Windows VM by using Mesa3D and placing opengl32.dll alongside godot.exe in a project directory. Not sure if that's your specific issue or not.Again, no problem if you can't help, but you did offer graphical help so I thought I'd ask. thanks.

Ah. Well, I imagined more python based stuff, but eh. Unfortunately my current rig can't run Godot regardless, but I may be able to find other sources. What sort of specifications did you have in mind?

Re: Audio game jam - No Video Jam starts August 14

@51 Hope I don't offend you for asking, but are you sighted at all? Your post here, and your work on BrushTone/AudiMesh3D, suggests you're more ... graphically-oriented than many here. I ask because, with my Godot accessibility work, I could benefit from help with a few minor technical graphical tasks (I.e. drawing some tilemaps to my specifications so I can see how Godot formats them, then figure out if I can make an accessible Godot tilemap editor.) And if that's the kind of graphical help you're offering, I might be interested in taking a crack at entering the jam with something tile-based. I've wanted to do some sort of simple tile-based procedural thing in Godot for a while now, but I need to build out the tooling a bit to make that practical. This could be a fun opportunity to do that. But if not, ignore me (unless you're someone *else* who can help, that is. :_

I like the initiative here. If anyone has any bottlenecks on idea's, it might not be a bad idea to tap into the community for idea's, or previous threads on the forum's for inspiration. Also, if anyones interested in any help or advice on graphical implementation, code, art assets, sonifiers, etc. I'm available. I'm thinking I may join in, something like a zelda clone has been going through my mind lately...
