Re: Best Chrome Box for keeping up with Chrome OS

@MyDearWatson: If you are talking about Fide OS, I was always suspicious of that package. It somehow did get the Google Play package, but who's to say if that extra telemetry can be disabled fully. It looks legal/legit considering it is China's Chrome OS distribution of choice, but still, lots of questions.

Re: Best Chrome Box for keeping up with Chrome OS

@5:There are indeed people who have installed chrome OS with Android support on their existing windows or whatever laptops or PCs. It could be done even with dual boot. I could have posted the link very easily, but very sure that people would bash me saying it's illegal. So, do a bit of searching.

Re: Best Chrome Box for keeping up with Chrome OS

@jack, Oh, I thought "Chrome Box" was a typo. Now I'm confused? I thought it was just Chrome Vox this, Chrome Vox that.@Chris, If earlier statements are true, you could in theory just use any TTS you can find from an application package. That solves all my problems right there. And I expect Google would package all of there language voices as the same ones on Android.

Re: Best Chrome Box for keeping up with Chrome OS

Do you have any Chromebook recommendations? I would have liked a desktop, but if that's not really feasible anymore, I guess I'll settle for a laptop. How about voices? I don't like the default Google TTS voice, and if that's the only U.S. option, I may not get something running Chrome OS. That's the main reason I can't use Cloud Ready for extended periods of time.

Re: Best Chrome Box for keeping up with Chrome OS

No. You cannot run android apps on Chrome OS unless it is the official oem distribution, which none of the open source distributions are. The Android Runtime for Chrome is proprietary code. That being said, any recent chrome laptop should run android apps just fine. Chrome-box is older and definitely not as common anymore since not many people are after them. There even used to be the chromebit that was simply a chromecast-like device that ran Chrome OS that plugged into your tv.

Re: Best Chrome Box for keeping up with Chrome OS

Hmm, aren't some of the chrome based laptops under 200 dollars. May be consider installing Chrome OS on a spare machine, there are guides online to do that. That will give you Android Apps support.

Best Chrome Box for keeping up with Chrome OS

Hi all,I'd like to dip my toe into Chrome OS land and am wondering which Chrome Box to purchase? I'd rather not get something too expensive, since it's pointless to me when most of the idea is to run web applications. Here are my questions.1. Can I get something for under $200 that will last at least a few years?2. Can I change the default voice ChromeVox uses? It's the awful female Google TTS voice, and I'd like to try something else if possible. What voices are available?3. I'd like to get a Chrome Box that supports Android apps. How accessible is the experience?4. For Chrome OS devices that support Linux apps, is this accessible?I've tried Neverware Cloud Ready, but it isn't quite the same as Chrome OS from what I can tell. I'd like to try official Chrome OS, but don't want another laptop.
