Re: Cat owners, help please?

I did not know you had a ragdoll jayde. The last time I saw that breed of cat, it look pretty big to me. Had to been the biggest cat I seen at the time. I have family who own cats and I can tell you that the beasts can be rather picky about the kind of food they eat to who holds them to just about anything. Believe you me when I say that they know how to get what they want.

Re: Cat owners, help please?

A lady said her cat was scared of the splash when it pooped, but was able to get it to poop by giving it a treat afterwards. So now when she comes home, if the cat is begging for a treat, she knows it pooped! My wife and I have considered it for our 2 cats. I would love to get rid of the litter box and the mess. Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure only one of our cats would be smart enough to be able to get it into the toilet. The other one pees onto the back of the little box instead of into the litter, so I have a feeling she would just completely miss the toilet. We do have the best automatic litter box hidden in our small walk-in closet. Since we have 2 in our bedroom, figured we could give one to the cats. We cut a hole out and installed a cat door. This at least works to keep the mess in one little area. Our cats are also scared of everybody so they like to hide in our bedroom when we have guests, so we needed the little box in our room.

Re: Cat owners, help please?

Have you considered getting a catio? They're pretty small enclosures, but it allows cats to have the best of both worlds. You can also look at a yard rigged with netting or tarps on top of the fence, or maybe put some rolling bars to discourage them from jumping. I read that cats like to keep their footing, so if they step on a rolling bar, they may get discouraged and jump back down.

@21Thanks for the bit about outdoor cats dying so quickly haha. Because I wasn't already terrified of the day that poor little Socks is found flattened by the number 21 bus. Also, I know the bell collar we got Socks is helping with the whole animal massacre thing. My dad saw her try for a Pigeon the other day. The bell jingled and the pigeon hightailed it out of there, so there's that. No clue about lizards and the like, as we live in the middle of england, and the only reptiles are the little buggers who drop their litter all over the place.

Re: Cat owners, help please?

Yeah cats are furry, fluffy little killing machines. And you do have to be up on their care if you let them out. I think it's a better quality of life for them though. Only if they show interest though. I wouldn't force a cat out that really doesn't want to go out, especially if it was declawed. You can't ever let a declawed cat out, because they're essentially helpless. They've lost 80% of their defensive capabilities, and the ability to climb effectively. SO they could be preyed upon and possibly killed. They also wouldn't be able to hunt.

Re: Cat owners, help please?

@IronCross,The bad thing is, when I asked a vet about declawing my cat, he said it would be fine. This was back in early 1996, and I thought I was helping my cat  by giving him more room to run in my apartment. At the time, I had a water bed, and he couldn't go into my bedroom because I was thinking he could possibly puncture it with his claws.Anyway, biggest regret of my life, and I just wish I had known even 10% of what I know now.As for outside cats,There is a lot of debate on this, but I read somewhere that the life expectancy of an indoor cat is 15 to 20 years. The life expectancy of an outdoor cat is 2 to 5.It's because there are so many dangers, country or city.Cars, other cats, human cruelty, wildlife, disease, a million dangers.Another aspect to think about if you let a cat outside is that one cat can kill a lot of wildlife, birds and lizards and small mammals, so keeping them indoors helps other animal populations too.Cats' litter boxes don't have to smell bad. If they are cleaned daily, they are fine. I had someone come into my house and comment on how he would never know I had a cat except that he saw her, because the house smelled so good.

She's partly calico.I'd also like to know how to administer topical meds or making sure the cat's mouth is open enough to squirt liquid medicines or making sure they eat their pills, especially after a fixing surgery. For the topical flea medicine, they want you to part the hair until the skin becomes visible, but I don't know if you have to dig with your fingers until you get to the root of the hairs and then squeeze the medicine into it.

Re: Cat owners, help please?

lol My cat realized that if he stands silently near his dish, he doesn't get attention. But if he bangs it, it'll tell me that it's nearly empty. I usually check on the daily anyway, but if I ever forget, and he's eaten or drunk more than I expected, then he lets me know in a hurry. Training indeed.I would never dream of letting my cat outside. First of all, he's a purebred ragdoll, and that breed of cat is probably among the more gullible and helpless. Siamese may have worse night vision but ragdolls basically trust almost everyone and everything. Far more importantly though, I'm in the city. There are literally three solid doors between me and the outside, and my kitty never goes outside. He'd get squished or lost in no time.If you're living far enough from the city that your cat doesn't mind coming and going outside or whatever, then that's cool. Of course, when cats go outside, they can pick up fleas, worms and other pests that they won't get when they're indoors. I very much feel this may be a culture thing, because a lot of Europeans I know - though by no means all of them - think the idea of keeping the cat in the house with a litterbox all the time is just weird. Here, it's actually fairly common.

Re: Cat owners, help please?

Plus a billion on the do not declaw thing. It's cruel, can lead to medical conditions, and yeah it's just like chopping off a knuckle. Basically don't get a cat if you're not ready to handle them scratching up shit, or learn how to redirect that behavior into something they are allowed to scratch. Yelling at them for scratching shit, then not giving them shit they can scratch is fucked up because they need to scratch. It's not just a thing they do to be ornery, cantankerous little shits, they need to scratch. If you feel like you need a declawed cat, check shelters to see if there's one already done, rather than declawing a cat yourself. Though you may face issues with adoption due to discriminatory little dingleberries there.I mean, if you have the space for it, sure, let your cats out. But just be aware that you're not going to train a cat to stay in your yard, and that they'll go all over the place. They might go to other people's houses, get food from other people, etc.The place not to do this is in the middle of the city, where you live in an apartment. This is a thing for the suburbs and the country. Also on yelling at cats, it's pointless. They don't give one solitary fuck about what you think, and you might scare them if they're more the skittish variety. To train cats is to understand cats, and the first step to understand cats is that they own you. You're living in their house. If your fragile little ego can't handle that, don't get a cat. It's also worth noting that your cat may end up training you.

Re: Cat owners, help please?

OK, so please take this as a question from someone who knows bugger all about cats, and only has one because the little tike came into our garden one day and now comes on the regular (I fell in love by the way, my wife is ecstatic because she always wanted a cat, we now add cat food to our shopping list, you get the idea):Why not just train them to go outside? I mean Socks (our little visitor) came from outside, she's never done anything in the house, so I assume she's doing everything outside, and we don't have, nor do we want a litter tray. Everyone seems happy with the arrangement, so I don't understand why others would voluntarily have a litter tray in the house with all associated smells ETC, when your cat's probably pretty chuffed with the great outdoors anyways? As an aside, we bought a pack of 3 bell collars off Amazon. Socks doesn't mind wearing it, we know where she is so don't tread on her, and she can't bring dead things back to haunt the house. Very much recommend.

Re: Cat owners, help please?

Tips from a cat owner of 26 years.GeneralRead all that you can about cats. I recommend books by Pam Johnson-Bennett and Jackson Galaxy. Any of those wil give you a wealth of information.Have your vet's number, and the number for a pet poison hotline, just in case. It is better to be prepared and never need something, than the desperately search for it when time is of the essence.DeclawingPlease, please, please, do not declaw your cats for any reason.I made this mistake once, because I thought it was like trimming nails. It is not. It is like removing the first joint of your finger. It made my playful unafraid cat completely insecure and much less playful. I will regret that decision til the day I die.Litter BoxesLitter box placement is key. Put the box in a quiet place, preferably one that you won't be walking through all the time. If you have a closet that doesn't get much use, a launry room that you aren't in often, a spare bedroom, those are places where the cat will feel that they have privacy. And that counts for a lot with cats.If you have two cats, get at least two litter boxes, and be sure to place them in separate areas, just in case one cat decides to be a bully and run the other out of the box.Covered litter boxes are aesthetically pleasing, but not necessarily best for the cat. Think of it this way. Would you like to go into a small enclosed bathroom that had not been cleaned yet? From my experience, when the cat visits its litter box, it will normally make a lot of noise scratching in the litter, then go quiet, then scratch the litter some more to cover. It is perfectly normal for a cat to run out of the box and all around the house afterword. I'm not sure why, but most of mine have done this.Litter boxes need to be cleaned every day, for the health of the cat. You can go a few days if you absolutely must, but it is not advisable. Bacteria can grow in the box if it goes uncleaned, and that could potentially lead to urinary infections. You need to learn your cat's bathroom habits smells, in order to determine if something changes. The litter box will not smell great immediately after a cat has been in it. But if the smell persists long after the cat has left, that could indicate an illness. Two odors to take note of are a strong ammonia scent, and diarrhea. The litter box may smell of ammonia when you are cleaning it, but it shouldn't smell strongly of that otherwise. Cats can get urinary tract infections, and they are amazing at hiding it from you. If you suspect one, it needs attention from a vet. Diarrhea is one to pay attention to, but it could be a change in the cat's diet, stress, etc. So take note of it, and observe your cat's behavior to see if anything else seems off. If you are concerned, call a vet, let them know you are a first-time cat owner, and they will be happy to answer your questions.I have two methods for cleaning the box.I use a Ziplock bag, and a litter scooper. This keeps me from getting my hands dirty, and it is perfectly fine for daily cleaning. If you suspect something is off with your cat's bathroom habits, then you need to go to plan B. I have boxes of cheap thin gloves that I put on, if I need to feel what is in the box. This is not lovely, but you cannot look at the cat litter to see if it appears normal, and if you suspect your cat is ill, you need to verify. It is worth using this method once a week or so, to get an idea of what feels normal and what does not.I am happy to answer any questions and give my experiences to help if I can. When I got my first cat, there was one book in the NLS library about caring for cats, and it was geared more toward young readers. I had no way to know what was right or wrong, and I lost my first cat to feline leuchemia. Knowing what I know now, if I observed the things he did  today, I would immediately know something was wrong. So I have learned from a lot of experience.Cats are easy to care for, and they make the most wonderful little companions. Like any other creature you are blessed to care for, you just need to learn a few simple tricks of the trade.

Re: Cat owners, help please?

Some cat experts say that it is better to have more than one litter box. This ensures that the cat always has easy access to the box, especially if there's more than one cat. The rule of thumb seems to be, have the same number of litter boxes as cats, plus one extra. This will mitigate any territorial disputes around the box. If you only have one cat, and live in a small residence, one box will suffice. I know a lot of people keep the box in an out-of-the-way place, but I have also heard that cats prefer to have the box in a socially meaningful space, such as a bathroom. I actually have one litter box in my bedroom, tucked into a corner. The other box is in the bathroom at the other end of the house. Both cats use both boxes, but only when the weather is horrible. They both vastly prefer to go outside to do their business. The whole backyard is their litter box! Also, we have a black lab who likes to occasionally raid the box, so we had to find places she wouldn't be tempted to go very often. There are lots of different viewpoints out there about how to deal with litter boxes. If you're curious, look up an author named Jackson Galaxy. He did a lot of YouTube videos about cats, as well as a TV show for many years called "My Cat from Hell". He's also written several books which I recommend.

Re: Cat owners, help please?

Yeah, I can garran-damn-tea you that if my cat was on the box and it started moving, she'd bolt and never go near it again. I don't have one, but judging by how skittish she is, I know it would freak her out.I second that about buying litter that doesn't contain a scent. Cats really do not go for that type of thing. You'll want something that clumps, so you can just scoop it or bag it. Get some disposable gloves to help with that.Put the litter box somewhere out of the way. If you have a basement, that is a good place. If it's a finished basement, in the landry room perhaps. Sometimes, they are a bit exuberant when they go to bury the mess, and they kick litter out of the box. So, if you can't put it in a basement, consider laying down a mat or something you don't care about to absorb it, or just get a small ahnd held vacuum.Whatever you do, keep it consistent. Figure out where the box will go, then put it there and leave it. Cats don't like it when their environment changes. They'll be able to find it, but it'll create unneeded stress for them.

Re: Cat owners, help please?

I adopted a cat from the animal shelter three years ago, and then adopted another one almost a year ago. Since I've never owned a cat before, I've been a hard-core dog person for 38 years, I did a lot of Internet research on the care and feeding of cats. I was amazed to find almost nothing about how a blind person deals with the litter box. After asking on Facebook and Twitter, I got a lot of good information. People use gloves, plastic bags, a litter scoop, a self-cleaning box, or a combination of these. My favorite method is to use plastic bags, just as I did when I picked up after my guide dog. I agree about washing your hands after handling the litter box, no matter how small the job. Also, clumping litter is great because when the cat pees, the litter absorbs the pee and turns it into a clump that can be picked up and thrown away. I highly recommend avoiding any kind of deodorizing or scented litter. The cats hate it, and it ends up smelling horrendous! Depending on your cats attitude about her litter box, you may want to check it every day or two and throw away any lumps. I agree about replacing all the litter with new fresh litter once a month or so, but again it depends on your cat. and, if you can smell the litter box, you've waited too long to do something about its contents.I am strongly opposed to self cleaning litter boxes. The main reason is because it's possible for the box to start moving And cleaning itself while the cat is still occupied. It would be like sitting on the toilet and having it flush itself unexpectedly while you were still in the middle of taking care of business. Cats have been known to completely avoid the litter box and pee and poop elsewhere in the house after being scared by a self cleaning box. However, some people swear by them and say their cats don't mind.anyway, I could go on and on and on about cats, but I'll stop here. I agree, we should have a general discussion thread about cats. Not only their care and feeding, but how amazingly cool they are. My two have changed my life for the better in so many ways and made me a much better person.

Re: Cat owners, help please?

Definitely recommend using a scoop or small hand-shovel or whatever you want to use every day or two, tops. Wear gloves if you're squeamish.Alternatively, if you find this is awkward, you can get those little poop-scooper bags. They're usually scented. Put your hand securely inside the bag and then look around the box for clumps and other bits. Corral them into one area, then sort of pick them up and shuffle the bag inside out. This may be a bit more accurate, but some people don't like how it feels, and if you're one of those, I don't blame you at all.I generally recommend washing your hands every time you deal with a litterbox, regardless of how in-depth the process is.And if your litterbox doesn't self-clean, I recommend changing out all the litter once every two to four weeks, depending on your type of litter, the size of your cat and her habits, and the size of the box.

Basically what Defender said. Sift through it with a scoop every few days or so, put the chunks in a bag, and throw the bag in the trash. I believe most litter boxes come with a scoop. You don't have to touch the litter, but if you find doing so helpful, I'd recommend wearing gloves. At the very least wash your hands when you're done. There are also litter boxes that will self-clean and all you have to do is empty the waste compartment when it gets full. There are many kinds, and some can be pretty expensive.

Re: Cat owners, help please?

I just sift through with a plastic hand shovel every day or two in order to find the chunks and throw them in a bag/bucket.  It gets easier the more you do it.You'll need to change the litter regularly anyway because of the pee, but that's easy to smell when it's getting close to time.

Cat owners, help please?

Hey all,Recently i acquired a cat. She's just awww, to say the least. A question though: How do you know when a cat's toilet is full? Like are you supposed to touch inside the thing and feel? Suppose not. Any help would be appreciated.
