Re: Editing problem in reaper

Oh I agree, but why would you remove all the silent passages from a podcast. That's what's odd to me. OK, sometimes when you need to make an edit, you'll want to preserve the cadence of the original speech. In that case, sure, make your cuts, but this thing about removing all the silence is a waste of time.

Re: Editing problem in reaper

the trick is to set the transient sensitivity and threshold right, the op. wanted an automatic way to remove silent passages and this is one of them.

Re: Editing problem in reaper

Why though, it makes no sense. You'll end up with hundreds of items, may have to tune and retune your gate, etc. I use dynamic split, but not like that.

Re: Editing problem in reaper

render that audio to a new take or to a wav  file, or use that current project as a subproject, then: use the dynamic split function to remove silent passages.

Hello guys!As I said, I'm editing a podcast, a 3-person conversation.  Is there any more automatic way that I can in the same part where a person is talking, the noise of the other tracks is silenced?

Re: Editing problem in reaper

If you imagine an old style reel to reel tape, and the tracks that you have in Reaper are divided into equal portions of the width of that tape, what you are doing with time selection is akin to taking a razor blade and making a nice clean cut across the width of it. Now you have two sections of tape, but you didn't want to do that. Instead, what you want to do is split the items, and not rely on time selection. There are several ways to do this. You can make two cuts which leaves you with one more than the total number of items on that track you started with. You can make a time selection, but instead of instructing Reaper to delete, you instead use the split items at time selection action. You can also trim items, which really only works if the section you want to preserve is somewhere in the middle. To make item splits one at a time, position your edit cursor where you want each one to be, then press A. This will select the item under the cursor if it already had not been, then it will do the split. If you want to make a time selection, you have a couple of ways to go about it. The first one is just like selecting characters in a text document. You put the cursor where you want to start, hold shift and press right or left arrow. This isn't the most precise method out there, but it is one that can work well. It's also worth noting that it responds to your zoom setting, so the lower the number given when you press minus or plus, the more sensitive a single tap of shift and one of the left/right arrow keys will be. Thus, you will move faster across the timeline. The second way of selecting is similar to that of goldwave and audacity, where you use the brackets to place start and end points. Though in reaper, it's important to know that you will want to press control and space to pause rather than just space if you are using the play cursor to find one of these points. This is because not pausing will jump the play cursor back to the edit cursor.Wen you have your points selected, one thing you can do to verify that it I a good selection is to press control R to go into repeat mode, then hit home to jump to the start of the selection, then space to begin playback. If it sounds clean on either end, i.e. nothing being cut off and no clicks, you can go ahead and make the splits. This is done by pressing shift and S. You then navigate to the item you just made and delete it.Hopefully that answers your question, but before I go, I wanted to touch on ripple modes, as it seems that you may be a bit confused as to the way they function. As you probably already know, with ripple off, any cuts you make between two items will preserve the spacing between the two items. This keeps the timing in tact. With ripple on, however, what you're doing is instructing Reaper to bump any items that come after a section you've just deleted up against the tail end of the previous section of audio. As an example, let's say I have a track with one item. I find a spot I want to get rid of and I make two splits, isolating that item. Now I have 3 items. If I don't want to preserve the timing between item 1 and item 3 when I delete item 2, I will turn on ripple mode. Now, item 3's start will be just after item 1's end.The major difference between the two ripple modes is that one effects the track that you're working on, and the other will effect every track at once.
