Re: Hey, so some random tech questions, plus a drumming question thrown in

Going to confirm the last post. I had a Zildjian ride cymbal with a very clean bell sound that I loved just about to death. It was big and heavy but worked like a charm. If you want an idea of the sort of thing I'm talking about, the closest approximation I can get is the ride Guns n' Roses drummer uses on Appetite to Destruction and Use Your Illusions 1 and 2. I love that sound for rock. But then again, both my crash cymbals were Sabian, and I adored them as well.At the end of the day I'm not quite knowledgeable enough to be married to a particular brand, but I know the sort of sounds I like. The best thing you can do is get a chance to hit one a little before you buy it. I would never dream of buying drums, especially, without getting a chance to play them live first. No chance.

Re: Hey, so some random tech questions, plus a drumming question thrown in

Regarding your drumming question. there are plenty of good cymbals out there, but you really need to hear the one you are buying because no two cymbals are the same, even from the same manufacturer. Also, what you hear from studio recordings is not what you will hear live, and what you hear sitting behind the kit is not what your audience will hear.Me personally, I prefer drier sounding cymbals with a clean bell sound. It makes for good articulation and doesn't sound washy when you are playing something intricate or fast, but I couldn't tell you what brand I have I don't remember. I just go and play a bunch until I find one with the sound I am looking for.

I like paiste symbols. If you want a dark symbol that records well or something to pull off orchestral rolls on a regular drum set, try bizans.

Re: Hey, so some random tech questions, plus a drumming question thrown in

Well, as far as your first question goes, when I have windows boot problems, I use seeing ai to read my screen. It works for most things, for me at least, and usually gives me enough information to know how to proceed. Most times, my computer is usually so broken that I'll just plug in a windows recovery disk and go from there, since narator does work in that situation. Booting into it does require using the bios, as I'm sure you know, and again, I use seeing ai to read me the order of my drives. Then, I simply press down arrow till I get to the correct one as indicated and press enter. It takes a few tries, but I get it done usually. Now, I do realize you said you don't have a monitor for your desktop, so there's this. I have heard of talking bios software before. I don't know too much about it, but I've seen people sell pc's with that as a selling point. I've been wanting to look into it myself, so if I do, I'll get back to you.As far as cymbals go, I prefer sabian myself, but I'm more of a heavy drummer and I love the way their stuff sounds. Also, their equipment isn't exactly cheap, so there's that too. I can tell you, though, that I've bought used cymbals before, and sometimes, they sound superior to new ones because they've been broken in some. I love going to Guitar Center to look at what they've got on their used cymbal rack, because sometimes there are some really, really good deals. I do realize that may be out of the question right now and maybe for a long while, so I'd suggest seeing what you can find online.

Re: Hey, so some random tech questions, plus a drumming question thrown in

Interesting. Thanks for the suggestions guys. I've tried Narrator multiple times, to no avail. I've heard of Zildjian, but I thought they were on the expensive side. pretty new to drums, so my budget is as low as it can get without the quality being poor. Here goes yet another question. I press the fn (function) key on a keyboard that has it, NVDA doesn't announce the key in input help mode. is this? Does it have something to do with the fact that Auto Hotkey doesn't have a native code for it?My situation is that I've got a Logitech keyboard, but the Logitech Options program is causing Windows to shutdown, or that's what the reliability results suggest anyway. Even if that's not the case, Logitech have gone down hill with their software. It's buggy, crashes randomly for some people anyway, and accessibility's... unpolished at best. With that program, I was able to reverse the function of, the function keys, so that by default, they would act as standard function keys, but would act as media keys when fn was pressed. I read somewhere that fn wasn't given a high enough priority by Windows or something, but it had been a while since I read that. Is this even remotely true? And how can I get around this Logitech board option? The only way to even possibly fix it is to log on with the standard administrator account created by Windows. The program works fine on that account for some reason, but not on my main one. Let me just say that it's actually worked before, but I don't know if it was an update that broke this, as I've rolled back to previous updates with the same issue, uninstalling the program each time I would update. So can I get around this? Either by fixing Logitech Options or finding an alternative with hotkey mapping software.

Re: Hey, so some random tech questions, plus a drumming question thrown in

Concerning your first question I can tell you that narrator works even if the windows is not booted. I've just had to reinstall windows because it wasn't booting propperly. I was able to try to repair it, to access the recovery environment and system restore by using narrator. Unfortunately none of these options actually repaired it so I had to reinstall from an usb stick. The only inaccessible part was selecting the drive to boot from but I got past that with the aid of seeing AI and some guess work.

Re: Hey, so some random tech questions, plus a drumming question thrown in

Hi, not sure i have answers to all of your questions, but for the first concerning getting speech in Windows before your desktop loads, well as long as it is Windows 10, you can do control+windows+enter, which will load Narrator. In Windows 10, a tun of improvements have been made to Narrator, including being able to load Narrator durring a Windows 10 installation. As far as I know, Narrator is not embedded into the kernel like with Speakup on Linux, so loading narrator will not always work depending on the issue you are having, but it is worth a try. It is my go to if I lose speech for what ever reason. Narrator has not been improved enough to use full time for sure, but it is coming along.

Hey, so some random tech questions, plus a drumming question thrown in

I know, I know! Before any of you happen to say:"This title is too generic."I honestly didn't want to create different topics and have to check over those multiple topics when 1 would do the trick, especially because the following don't fall into any of the other rooms. Yeah, my life's so hard, right? Also, the title reaches the maximum character limit. Has anyone seen that before, huh? I screwed up something with my computer and had to fix it, duh. "No worries, " I thought. "I'm usually okay at doing this."Only to find (with sighted assistance) that Windows was displaying a repair dialogue before Windows had fully loaded. Of course, I had no way of knowing this by my self as, well, it's Windows, but before it's fully loaded, so no screen reading accessibility. I also happen to not have a monitor for my PC, so that really helped. I ended up restoring to my latest restore point, but is their a way I can perform these types of operations completely auditorily before I'm in Windows properly so I don't need sighted assistance? I'm really looking at any way at all. Next question, I've been using Google Docs and the Google web suite of applications in general across a Windows 7 laptop and a Windows 10 PC, both running Firefox, though the PC's got the latest build of Nightly, while the laptop's got the stable build. There are differences in accessibility. Note that yes, I am using NVDA on both instances. For example, the laptop announces capital letters, while the PC doesn't, and accessibility mode is toggled on. On the other hand, popup bubbles are reported on my PC, but not on my laptop. This inconsistency is not only odd in my opinion, but honestly gets annoying. So, why do these inconsistencies exist in the first place? And are they just settings I can change? I haven't found anything that shows I can. Also, I've just found the accessibility to be sloppy across the board. For example, to access any of the UI that isn't the document, I have to focus NVDA to a different part of the window (the address bar for instance) and focus back to the web content. with NVDA in browse mode. This isn't difficult by any means, but it seems... clunky I guess. For anyone who's had more experience with working with the Google suite, could you please say that this isn't the way I'll have to deal with things? It honestly annoys me because they look so promising! In theory, they work seamlessly, and content is accessible easily from every device I sign into, but it's the accessibility that has had to be designed from scratch. Finally, I'm looking for a good ride cymbal that would compliment a pop-rock type of genre. Could anyone recommend a manufacturer or even a specific cymbal? So, I realize I'm not writing this with my most non-biased mind, and I accept that this may trigger someone out their, and that this is not my most informative, original, witty, official-sounding post I've made. Hell, because I'm  not that type of person really, but I'm waiting for the critical comments I know will come eventually, though constructive criticism, if delivered correctly, will only help here. Thanks for reading this mess of a post and, maybe even dealing with me throughout. It has to be my longest one yet, though that hardly means it's good.
