Re: Jaws vs NVDA and braille displays?

thats the good thing about NVDA, in my opinion. You can make add-ons for what you want like braille extender, or you can just put it into your copy of NVDA straight up if you know how. The braille suppport in JAWS is a lot better than NVDA by default, but i don't really have a braille display anymore that i could use to test it with. NVDA, however, like people have said is opensourced so you can put things in it if you know how, as well as add-ons have costumizability. JAWS also has more crashes and hurts pc power at least as far as i know from experiences of others and myself.

Re: Jaws vs NVDA and braille displays?

Yes, JAWS's braille support is superb. It was actually in 1995-6 or so that then Henter-Joyce put braille support into it. This was because they were approached by a European distributor who wanted to represent them and the European distributor told them that in order to properly market to the European market they had to put braille into there product. Still, the braille support in NVDA could actually have customization work built into it for braille since it is open source.

Re: Jaws vs NVDA and braille displays?

well, this makes me think that if you buy or get a braille display by the company that makes, jaws, ideally, that same company coupled with the software they make should provide the most complete support and functionality for it.

Re: Jaws vs NVDA and braille displays?

@5: Great question. It doesn't look like NVDA gives you the ability to switch between structured and line mode even with the add-on.From what I remember a year or two ago, it also had translation issues using UEB (but honestly the Braille support in NVDA was so bad back then I gave up entirely on it and never looked back.) In JAWS you can also configure what types of messages you see on your display which again the add-on doesn't indicate you can configure. For example, I switch off message announcements with my display in JAWS.You can also customize what you see for each control type in JAWS which the add-on doesn't indicate it supports. These might seem like minor features to some but for others who use Braille regularly they're pretty important. It could be that I need to give NVDA Braille another chance since NVAccess decided to actually start paying attention to Braille users but first impressions are pretty powerful, especially when you've got a tool that already works really, really well and you don't have the patience to wait for others to catch up.Granted as @6 has said JAWS has had at least 30 years on NVDA so these issues are understandable but I'm still disappointed at how long it took for attention to turn to Braille.

Re: Jaws vs NVDA and braille displays?

Reluctantly I'll have to agree with post 2.  I've tested NVDA support for various displays over the years and haven't seen much in the way of groundbreaking improvement here.  JAWS still takes grand prize; it might arguably said that JFW can beat out Voiceover in this department, though admitedly I haven't tested those waters. You have to remember though that JAWS has been doing this for a little over 30 years though, which means they have had the time required to establish themselves in this market.  Also, remember that Blazie Engineering who established themselves as a leader in notetaking devices that had braille displays and the like partnered up with them, along with Arkenstone, forming Freedom Scientific.  That in essence put them ahead, since FS was able to manufacture its own braille displays.

Re: Jaws vs NVDA and braille displays?

Hi.@Munawar, I, and probably the opening poster, would like to get more information or possible examples where JAWS has customisation options where NVDA does not, including with the use of the Braille Extender add-on.

Re: Jaws vs NVDA and braille displays?

JAWS has better braille support, but I have been having stability issues lately.I recently startted using Notepad++ again for writing Markdown, and JAWS has been crashing a lot. JAWS has been hanging up a lot in Firefox as well. If this keeps up, I won’t be renewing my license next year.

Re: Jaws vs NVDA and braille displays?

By default, Jaws might be better, perhaps. But with Braille Extender installed, NVDA actually seems to have more options for customization.

Re: Jaws vs NVDA and braille displays?

JAWS' Braille support is far more customizable than NVDA's and is also much more reliable. As far as basic functionality, they both work. But if you want flexibility and all that then JAWS is your best bet. Sadly NVDA suffers from a lack of options as far as configuration is concerned.

Jaws vs NVDA and braille displays?

I just got my hands on a focus 40 blue 5th gen and was honestly curious if one offered better support for braille, or any sort of groundbreaking features that one reader has when it comes to displays that the other doesn't? It seems as far as basic functionality, they both seem to be on the same level. The last time I used a braille display, NVDA was probably still in alpha stages. lol
