Re: Let's talk Goalball

@20, Yeah I didn't used to think there was any possibility of playing after high school either... thank the lord I figured out about adult teams. Also, strong arms are pretty nice and can really help when throwing or defending. You'll also want to  note that Goalball is a pretty physical sport though, especially at the higher levels and endurance is a good thing to have too. Strong legs are also crucial so you can block cornershots if you're wing and block any shot if you're at center.@22yep. the ball really can hurt. But it's a good hurt because you know you've prevented a goal from being scored on you lol.@23 That's pretty good. You should come up with a theme song. We used to have one we'd ask the school hosting our meets to play before every game. It was that domination song that used to be the WWE theme a long time ago. Unfortunately we never could manage to live up to it though haha. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vgsuM1Vv_qk

Didn't  think goal ball was an actual  idea.  Like,  a  full on sport with it's own tournaments and such. Really, before I read this topic, I had my own misconceptions thinking  that  goal  ball wasn't the most physical sport out there.  I've  played  what I now know is far from real  goal ball,  I'd  love to learn to actually play it since I've got strong  arms.

Oh man, the Atlanta team is really good. I've seen them play before and they are something else. Florida usually fields some amazing teams too, in fact I think one of them is called the florida ultimate. And yeah, I get that whole thing about being blind making it hard to get to stuff. Even if you were sighted an hour and a half is a ways to drive each day for practice. Luckily, there's a team only about 50 minutes from where I live and I plan on moving there after high school anyway.

Re: Let's talk Goalball

I have played goalball since I was 7 i think, which would make it 10 years total. I play both for the Danish youth team, as well as the mens national team here in Denmark. I will be attending A EM next week actually, and I am pretty hyped, even though I know and accept that I am far from making it to the starter trio.I have seen my share of broken goalballs, and I think that it mostly has to do with the rubber of the ball getting old and less flexible. I have seen some hard throws that didn't even leave a mark on the ball, while a rather weak throw with an old ball can break it. There probabbly are other factors as well. And oh yeah, I usually play center, since my defence is quite good and my offence not so much.

Re: Let's talk Goalball

@14, yes, then you probably have the right ball. It's odd that it looks differently than the ones you've used before. Although it is true that they didn't always use to make goalballs like they do now, that variety has been around for a good while. And yes, if you don't use your ball as it isn't supposed to be used, it'll hold up just fine. My throw clocks in around 28 miles per hour, not terribly fast, but there's still plenty of force behind the throw when it hits something. The ball I have now has lasted me since late June, because I started backing up a lot more before I threw so as to increase the distance the ball had to travel and I I implemented packing rubber as a shortterm solution.Anyway, how is getting your team together going? Where are you all based? There some great adult teams in the US and Canada. If you're having a hard time getting people to join yours, you may want to look around to see if there's one nearby you can get on.

Re: Let's talk Goalball

The ball can take hard hits. The balls which my team uses for practice last well over a year, some of them multiple years, after being thrown at the walls of the gym where we don't have goals set up. And all of our players are either national team level players or nearly there, so there's more than enough strength being put into shots to break them. Well used, they last a very long time.

Re: Let's talk Goalball

@12 I only broke mine because I stupidly threw it very hard from a not very far distance at a surface it wasn't designed to be thrown at. The rubber of and glue of the ball is made to take impacts on softer things, such as people and goal nets. I was throwing at a wooden fence. Eventually, I realized I was spending way too much on replacing the ball and I could invest money into making a DIY goal than continuing to shell out 80 bucks every 7 months. Most of mine would crack right around the middle where the glue holds the two halves together and continue cracking as I threw it more and more. Eventually it became impossible to practice with after the ball split so much the bells were coming out of it haha. From where did you order your ball? All goalballs should be 9.4 inches in diameter and have 8 sound holes. This is not much bigger than a basketball, so if you can compare, then you should. I order mine from the USABA. It's listed as an IPSA certified goalball and costs 94 dollars, 80 for the ball and 14.95 for shipping. You may have acquired a Junior Goalball which is designed for smaller children to play with and is not as firm so as to prevent injury for newcomers to the sport. But if treated correctly, your ball should last a while. It shouldn't break easily. The Kentucky school for the blind has balls over 5 years old that have been thrown and hit against just about everything associated with the game in their time. I finished one off the other day trying to throw a bounce ball actually haha. It was already coming apart at the seams though.

Re: Let's talk Goalball

I learned about goalball when I was around 5 years old and have been playing regularly on the Kentucky School For the Blind's team. I don't actually attend that school but I live close enough to catch a ride to practice. This is my sixth, and sadly, last year on that team. We actually just finished playing a meet down in Tennessee yesterday against the a-formentioned Missouri School For The Blind, Mississippi School For the Blind, And Tennessee themselves. Yes, I bought myself severall balls... because I keep breaking them lol. I finally got smart and built myself a goal so I could practice throwing without tearing the ball in half. I love the sport and can't play it enough. After I graduate high school, playing on an adult team is a definite.I prefer playing left wing. I played there for a good four years before I was moved to center. I'm okay there, and do good for someone with only minimal experience, but give me the left side any day. I find it easier to keep the ball out of center from there too, but my coach keeps starting me there because I communicate with my teammates and have pretty excellent court orientation. I hate playing right though, because I'm not as good at posting on my left hand.  I one day aspire to be able to throw a spin throw, but those are not easy. A lower center of gravity helps, but I'm tall so I have that going against me. I'm working on a half-spin, and when I get good at that, I may move up to a full tornado. I can throw an ok bounce ball, but a lot of the times I either get a longball or all the momentum is gone by the second bounce. Those, too, aren't easy. But I work on them and make them better.
