Re: (Not so Quick) NVDA Query and Computer Deciding Help

Thanks once again. I use Vocalizer obviously cause of the more natural-sounding voices in different languages too, as I am learning multiple languages.

Re: (Not so Quick) NVDA Query and Computer Deciding Help

Yeah, Vocalizer is probably the issue here, I'm afraid.  Or at least a big part of it.  Most of us who use Espeak/Eloquence aren't doing it because they're amazing voices, we do it because they go really fast and take almost no processing power.  All of the natural sounding voices can get clobbered like you wouldn't believe irregardless of screen reader, if something in the background decides to take all of the computer's processing power for some reason, and that's one of the big issues with Mac speech that makes it so high latency.I bet you've got a few things that suck CPU like candy when it starts--Dropbox is actually a big offender, sometimes, for instance, if it decides it needs to hash your local content.Reinstalling windows isn't necessary, usually.  It's just like how if we don't know what's wrong we tell you to reboot the machine.  Unfortunately it's effective and if you haven't developed the skills necessary it might be your best option. Most of the development for Word and several other things is going via UIA now, because Microsoft needs UIA for Narrator.  NVDA doesn't have it on by default, but that particular checkbox has helped a lot of people I know who need Word, and the new terminal implementation also fixes bugs there supposedly.  It'll probably be the default in the near future, but for now it's a good checkbox to try.Computer mostly doesn't matter.  I'm betting it's your synth.  I bought a random dual core laptop from best Buy because of a hurricane (yes, really) and it's lasted me 4 years or so now without a problem.  I'm probably going to upgrade it, and there's a bit of lag at startup, but it works.  The biggest problem with buying a laptop is that sometimes capslock+random keys doesn't work, but there's almost no good way to figure out if that's going to be an issue save by buying the exact laptop of someone else who knows that's not a problem, and you can usually remap things a little with Sharpkeys for instance (my laptop uses right alt as insert for example). You may get a lot of mileage out of opening programs and features, going down that list, googling anything you don't recognize, and uninstalling it if you don't need it.

Re: (Not so Quick) NVDA Query and Computer Deciding Help

Oh!You are using vocalizer. That has caused issues for me. The thing is too heavy, bad responce time and cause NVDA to become unresponsive few times.Resetting Windows should be done in atleast once in a year. It's not much of a problem as most of my stuff is online and automatically comes back once i install the programm. Also, resetting without deleting your data is possible. If not that, run Windows in safe mode or secure boot or whatever it is called, do a google search for it, then investigate which programm is causing the issue. Same could be done with NVDA addons by disabling all and later enabling them 1 by 1.

Re: Quick NVDA Query

Thanks for your suggestions guys. I'll post my thoughts one-by-one below.I'll just say now that I'm getting a new computer, so I'm partly looking for what desktop things I should be looking for and avoiding, so just to get this out of the way and while I'm typing this, if you guys are experienced in desktops, what should I be looking for as an accessibility user? I'd like to be able to carry this around in a bag, so no monitors or heavy shells please. Let's also go for something with at least 4 ~USB ports, and minimul bloatware out of the box if possible. I had a Kingsoft desktop that served me loyally, but it's reaching its EOL. It only lasted me around a year too, is this expectedd? I've heard of things such as OriginPC, so should I persute that path, stick with Kingsoft or go with something else? So, you're telling me that I should reset Windows every time I want it to perform like new again? I realize it's the most complete method, but is that really the only way? Seems a little drastic to me, but I haven't really done it myself, and Windows came pre-installed on this desktop. Fortunately, it was a small enough manufacturer that bloatware was only the Microsoft stuff, but I'm getting OT here. So, if this really is the only method, how often should I do it, or is it just when I notice a performance decrease? The only Microsoft Office add-in that is slightly out-of-place is the native Dropbox one, which gets in my way more than helps me, but I can't figure out how to disable them. I go to File>Options>Add-ins and I get a list, but right-clicking does nothing, pressing enter clicks the okay button, and I can't find a related button in the window. I also have the iCloud add-in for Outlook, which installed with iCloud for Windows from Apple.I will try using a portable copy of NVDA with my add-ons to see if I notice anything. I've got a large amount of them (37 to be exact), so that could have been the obvious issue. Has anyone got a similar number or more running fine on their end? If so, what are your specs?I'm using NVDA 19.3.1 with the Vocalizer add-on, with M365 Insider channel, latest version I can get@Accman, About that supposed Alex add-on for NVDA, if we're talking about the same one, that was a prank, so no wonder it was laggy. It had a select few words in its vocabulary that were recorded that it would announce when NVDA encountered them. The closest thing I can think of is the Speak-N-Spell, where it had a limited word-bank that it would refer to, but I don't really know. The reason I don't use eSpeak or Eloquence is because I literally grew up with Daniel and the rest of the Vocalizer family, with an iPad being my very first step into this tech world I am so acquainted with now. Listening to eSpeak, Eloquence or Dectalk now literally gives me headaches in minutes, and Acapela isn't much better, though is a slight step in the right direction. OneCore actually really isn't bad, and couple that with Dual Voice, I can extend the already good auto-language switching of stand-alone OneCore, so that is an option.Right, sorry for that wall of text. That's what I can think of now. Your opinions and thoughts are greatly appreciated!

Re: Quick NVDA Query

Yeah, portable installs are your best steps to try. Also, If your windows 10 installation is very old and you haven't done a clean install or reset windows in a while, that can also fix problems.

Re: Quick NVDA Query

It depends which synthesizer you use, some might slow NVDA a lot. For example, using e-speak works very fast, using windows 10's one core voices works moderately good and using sappy 5 works slow and cumbersome on my machine.

Re: Quick NVDA Query

Maybe try toggling your UIA checkboxes under the advanced section in settings.Or try a fresh portable install and see if that one hangs up at the same points?  That way you'll know if it's your settings.`The comment about running with addons disabled is a good one too.

Re: Quick NVDA Query

Yeah, I'd kind of forgotten about that. The one core voices work really well on my daughter's computer, and I'm using Eloquence on my Windows Seven machine with no problems of any kind. E-speak has given me no trouble either. However, I remember once there was an add-on that was suppose to make it so you could use the Alex voice from Apple's products on your PC with NVDA. I tried that and have never had so much trouble with NVDA as I had during that time. I'd never seen anything lag as that program did that night when I tried that particular synthesizer.
