You love systemd? What are you, sick? I can't stand systemd. I get why people want it, mostly process supervision, but I really think systemd is an appalling example of creeping featuritis, only now it's in the very core of your OS. Yes, sysvinit has issues, but they are solved by writing an alternative init system that provides process supervision, not trying to replicate Microsoft Windows. Anyway, my answer has been the Mac Mini, running Linux. It's probably overkill, but I love that it's also a Mac, is an amd64-based system, and has the processor grunt to do anything you could realistically throw at it in your home server role. I use Debian, mostly because I want to spend as little time messing with it as possible and Debian has a very comprehensive re
pository. It's a very minimal textmode system with no C compiler installed on it.Yes, standard comments apply for all living-room Linux setups. I don't have a graphical stack, and I already have Apple TV so no need of an alternative interface. However, you will wish to set up all of the necessary file-serving support to get access from a web browser (Chrome OS), SMB (Linux, Win, Mac) and--only if you require a Time Machine server--AFP (Mac). Optionally, turn the device into your Internet gateway (good if you want IPv6, QoS, filtering, logging, etc), mail server, web server, recursive DNS services (including ad-blocking), get-iplayer client, torrenter, downloader, uploader, mirror fetcher, URL watcher, remote backups, etc etc etc. You really can just do whatever the sodding hell you want, and it'll all run quietly and cooly in the background, awaiting your command.

Re: Reasons for getting a Raspberry Pi

Hi,Arch-Linux is the best in regards to customizability. At least, it's the best next to Gentoo, which is probably as good as you can get. Don't try Gentoo unless you want to wait about 5-12 hours compiling Linux... God, I did that once and it was a living hell. And that was in a VM with 4GB of RAM allocated to it! I highly doubt it would even function properly on the Pi...

Re: Reasons for getting a Raspberry Pi

Greetings!Yes, it is possible to run Kodi Screenreader on the Pi if you install ESpeak first, but then you may need some sighted help to get the Kodi Screenreader addon downloaded from the Kodi repository, eventually activating it. But that's the only accessibility issue I heard from the Podcast, because installing ESpeak can be done via SSH through your Computer, but you use the Pi itself with Kodi running on it to do the rest.

Re: Reasons for getting a Raspberry Pi

Hi paddy.Yes, it should be possible to run servers alongside XBMC / kodi, though keep in mind that while doing things with kodi (streaming / transcoding video etc), you'll have less CPU cycles and memory for your different server daemons, and vice versa. I didn't even know a screenreader with kodi was possible on the pi, so that's really awesome to know. Also, I've been meaning to try out arch; I love systemd and even though debian 8 (jessie) uses it, I've heard good things about arch so will probably try that soon.

Re: Reasons for getting a Raspberry Pi

I used to use arch on my pi as well, but for some strange reason, samba ran much faster on raspbian. I think it was 4 mb versus 8 mb ps. But I am not sure about the numbers and the things have quite probably changed.By the way, there is the lite version of raspbian now as well, which should be much more minimalistic and shouldn't contain so much bloat.

Re: Reasons for getting a Raspberry Pi

Hi Blademan,Thanks a lot for this list of things we could do with the Pi. I am currently also listening to a Podcast where a visually impaired Person, not really familiar with the Pi, sets up Kodi, using the XBIAN Distribution. He however did warn blind People that they Need sighted help, in order to get Kodi Screenreader installed together with ESpeak. This media Center might even help me connecting to my Receiver, accessing a few of ist settings. The guy I mentioned before had his dreambox connected with Kodi, so he could watch TV and do other interesting stuff.I am wondering if it is possible to use the Pi for things like the Server you mentioned, while having the Kodi Distribution running on it. At least it should be possible, from what I heard, to download the required things from the web, Repos or whereever else. While attending the ICC in Zeist, the Netherlands last year, there also was a Raspberry Pi Workshop where I was able to take part at, and we d
ownloaded ESpeak, an mp3-file from the web and fiddled around with the system's Settings. At this time a was Kind of interested already, but eversince I heard about Kodi and the other things you could do with the Pi, I am really considering to get one.

Re: Reasons for getting a Raspberry Pi

I have a PI2 for a year now and I'm also mostly using it as a file server. I run both samba (Windows SMB) and Netatalk (Mac AFP to get time machine backups). I also put the latest BTSync on it, which is really convenient as the pi is always on so I can share files to people all the time. It's also being used for large download or upload operations (youtube-dl for videos, wget for websites, lftp to upload to ftp or webdav and transmission for torrents).Other people I know run other things, for example Andre Louis recently connected a USB audio interface to his pi, which is now being used to  run his outside audio stream. Another friend runs teamTalk, Irc, fossil (it's a subversion system like git) and barracuda drive on his.I haven't personally ran a Kodi media centre on my Pi, but it's definitely not a bad option. There are preconfigured  distress for this, like OpenElec. If you install Kodi Screen reader into it, such a setup can b
e much more powerful than an Apple TV which is way more expensive as Kodi has access to many more sources because of the community around it.One more thing, this is personal preference, but I don't run raspbian on my pi and instead opted for ArchLinux ARM. It's a lot smaller and doesn't come with the bloat of raspbian that you won't ever use if running headless. I also really love the AUR repositories as many things you would normally have to manually compile yourself from sources can be installed for you automatically. It also uses systemd which I think is more straight forward to use than init scripts.

Re: Reasons for getting a Raspberry Pi

Hi.It depends on your level of curiosity and general knowledge about computing in general, Linux, etc. If you don't know anything about any of that, a pi is a great tool to start.Go find a book about debian linux and look at all the uses you can put a small, portable, power-efficient box to.Here's a list of things I use my pi for off the top of my head:* Network attached file server (samba, network filesystem)* Synchronizes several folders with my mac and other computers so they always have the most up-to-date version, and any changes I make on one get sent to the rest. The pi isn't necessary for this, but it's a nice backup if I need access quickly and don't have one of my computers.* Runs a small unused teamtalk server* runs a small website* sometimes runs a VPN that allows me to tunnel over the internet to my home network from anywhere in the world to get a secure, encrypted connection, even on open wi-fi
networks and access resources on my network* it used to run a git server where I stored my personal projects, I've since migrated to gitlab and now use my big server for that* Acts as a time machine backup server for my mac; it backs itself up to the pi (which has an attached external harddrive) automatically* occasionally runs projects of mine that monitor twitter, Reddit, crawl the web, run a mud chat server, etc. Generally stuff I don't need large amounts of processing power for, but need to run in the background all the time.If you like software or hardware hacking projects (or want to get into them), know a programming language and want to do something cool with what you know and have it run all the time (or want to learn a programming language and see how it can be used in the real world), get a new toy and run projects that others have helpfully put together for your leisure, run a small blog or file server accessible from anywhere in the wo
rld, run your own teamtalk server (everyone and their mom has one, so why not you), or just learn about servers in general, get a pi.As for using it as a media center, I personally don't have much experience with that; if you have some sight or want to set it up for someone who does that would be a great use of it, as long as it would be used. Otherwise, I would go with using it as a headless server (where the pi has power and a network connection, but no keyboard, mouse, or display; you control it through SSH, over the network).Hope this helps, feel free to post questions here or on another topic and if I see them I'll try to help.

Re: Reasons for getting a Raspberry Pi

I myself use my pi mainly as a file server. So I don't have to connect my usb harddrive every time to my laptop, but can access my stuff over the network instead. But of course you can use it as some other kind of server, as long as you don't need a lot of computing power. For example simple web, print or some other kind of server.I also use it for web crawling to automatically collect some specific information from the web.

Reasons for getting a Raspberry Pi

Hi Folks,I already heard from several People, including blind and visually impaired, who got themself a Raspberry Pi, Kind of like doing their own Projects with it.However, I could never find enough reasons for me why I should get one, although I heard that you could do a lot of random stuff with the Raspberry Pi. The only reason I found yet might be Kodi, also known as the XBMC media Center. But I would like to ask you what Kind of experiences you made with your Raspberry Pi and what to do with it, because the Raspberry awoke my interest. Thanks in advance.Best regards,Patrick
