Re: Samsung Galaxy S4 Accessibility Help

I heard an unclear demo of it and the hq version sounds a bit like svox. And, weird. On her particular device there was no google tts, only samsung tts, and I wonder, now that you mention it, is there a way to get that hq samsung tts on older devices like my samsung galaxy tab3? All I see in the samsung tts settings, we have language, and settings for samsung tts. In the settings for samsung tts, is a list of voices, but it seems like only one voice per language, like Alice for US English, Elizabeth for UK etc.

Re: Samsung Galaxy S4 Accessibility Help

@Jack,It appears that Samsung gives updates only in new devices, and does not choose to integrate or let the customers install them in older phones. For example, I have a galaxy s3, and Galaxy s4 has a very nice application called Samsung optical reader, which should do a similar job to KNFB reader. But I cant install it and Samsung hasnt released any update for this phone. The Samsung TTS is made up of Xvox voices. Whenever I change the language of the Samsung TTS, it turns up a dialog box telling me to download the high quality corresponding to that voice, if its not been already downloaded. Also when you go to the language of Samsung TTS, in the right side of each voice, there should be a button to download the HQ voice. At least thats what I can see here in my device. Maybe samsung has the tendency to produce new devices and fill them with brand new features and let the older ones stick with the existing features which are built in. This is n
ot fair at some points, I think.

Re: Samsung Galaxy S4 Accessibility Help

Thats exactly why Im all for custom roms, rooting, and such, because of the exclusion of such features. The newer s series is very much accessible but that only applies if you actually! have those devices, and even those devices will slowly become outdated as well. Samsung, in a way, are like Apple in how they manage their older devices. Newer devices are all well and good, but older ones not so much.

Yeah, Apple is getting better at updating their old devices. Samsung? Nope. So to any future samsung users, at least go for the s4.

Re: Samsung Galaxy S4 Accessibility Help

@Jack, Nope, the google TTS is still there I can use it if I like. When you change the TTS to the Samsung one, you should come across a dialog box which asks you to download high quality for the currently selected voice. I know, if its the standard quality, its completely rubbish, but when you download the high quality voices, itll completely change, Believe me.

At least apple has updated its old 2011 iPhone 4S to iOS 8.4. Could you ever think that Samsung would do the same with Samsung galaxy s2 by updating it to android 5.0 Lollipop? Never!

Re: Samsung Galaxy S4 Accessibility Help

@Jack,I dont understand your opinion on Samsung galaxy s series phones. If there are any accessible android phones, those ones are Samsung galaxy s series. Touchwiz home is very accessible and you can do almost everything on it. If you have used a Samsung built-in android jellybean, then in 4.4.2 everythings better. Samsung email is accessible enough and you could do what the app stands for. Samsung itself provides some nice features that you want to take away like S voice, voice control, ability to answer calls via homebutton and end them using the power button. This serie of Samsung galaxy devices is what comes close to iPhone, in terms of accessibility. From galaxy s3, to galaxy s6 everything changed. I wish you could try a galaxy s4 or s5 and then well talk. Then dont forget apps that are built in Samsung like the sound player which is a good app to listen music, and the Samsung optical reader which is a similar app to KNFB reader, very accessible
by the way. Samsung camera is better than the one of android stock, it can detect your face and announce it via the front facing camera. In my opinion, I wouldnt recommend flashing or installing anything which would root your device and get outa Samsungs accessibility. As far as I know, Samsung has announced that Samsung galaxy s4 would get the new version 5.0 Lollipop. And I dont understand peoples point in removing extra features from their phones. (nothing directed towards you Jack)If you dont like them, just dont use them. Why dont you remove Stocks in iPhone or any other app from there?

Re: Samsung Galaxy S4 Accessibility Help

@Afrim, I was going off my experience with a samsung tablet namely the Samsung galaxy Tab3 7 inch running android 4.1.2. Touchwhiz was slow and had some annoying weather widget in my way that I really couldnt remove, pain-to-use samsung keyboard, none of the accessibility features you mentioned, and only the super low quality, robotic samsung tts engine. And worse yet it never got updated, the midi support sucked making the talkback sounds sound different, and a whole lot of other things. Touchwhiz had no accessibility features like the accessible dragging of apps and such. The camera app was almost inaccessible, no flicking support, no face detection. Put simply, after having experience with that, I never planned to use Samsung again and never planned to recommend it to anyone. Course, it mightve also meant it was just an older device, even though in truth it really wasnt that old.

Re: Samsung Galaxy S4 Accessibility Help

@Jack, if you could ever get on your hands a Samsung galaxy s4 or s5 or even s6, dont hesitate to use it for some minutes. youll see the changes. Samsung text-to-speech is updated and it provides more voices now, from Samsung galaxy s5 and up. For example UK English voice was Victoria, and now Oliver is added as well. This serie of Samsung is the best of Samsung in phones. The only problem Im facing these days is the Mozilla firefox which is crashing so much and I cant browse the web comfortably. Most of the apps, I think 95 to 98% of built-in apps of Samsung are fully accessible. The only one is internet which is not.You know, when Samsung galaxy s2 came out it was a blockbuster, but the galaxy s3 was another surprise for Samsung. I always liked it and Im still using it. Talking about android phones, the only ones I recommend are Samsung galaxy s3, s4, s5 and s6. I dont have any experience with galaxy note devices though.

Re: Samsung Galaxy S4 Accessibility Help

@afrim Yeah, I tried my friends s4 a while ago and while it still use that blasted low quality samsung tts I was much more impressed with the accessibility than I ever expected, considering the bad experience I had with the samsung tablet. Bunch of accessibility features, but apparently they had removed the google tts from that device I have no idea why. But things worked a lot better on that device.

Re: Samsung Galaxy S4 Accessibility Help

To be honest, the older samsung phones with the touchwizz interface, while they have some nice accessibility addons like home button to answer calls and power button to end them, it is far from the accessibility standard of stock android, which you would get if you got a nexus, moto or anything similar. There is also a ton of bloatware installed on the device, stuff you may not want, and stuff you cant remove, like the samsung email program, the samsung keyboard, etc. I would recommend getting a custom rom on your phone, the best one is cyanogen mod. As you may or may not know, android is open sourced, so it can be modified. Cyanogen is, essentially an aftermarket, custom version of android, based on Googles android source. Not samsungs, not anyone elses. Its basically stock android plus-plus. As stock android provides a much better experience as far as accessibility, one benefit youre gonna get from flashing cyanogen is that, your phone is going to have co
mpletely unmodified stock android. There is a ton of extra features, most of them beneficial, but none of them will get in the way of using your phone like samsungs extras do sometimes. I say this because my samsung galaxy tab3 gave me hell as far as accessibility is concerned. And if I understand it right your phone is still on a 4.something build, so you definitely do not have the latest version of android. With the 25, s6, s6edge, and s6edge plus all out, theres no telling whether samsung will continue to support the s4 or not. The tablet I had came out only about a year before I got it, yet 4.1.2 was the absolute last version of android it would get. Support was dropped and it was only a year of the tablet being out, this is what I mean. They want you to upgrade your phone. They *nag* you to upgrade your phone. However, you dont have to upgrade. Cyanogen, as far as I know, is still being worked on for the galaxy s4, and any cm12 build there is for the s4 will d
efinitely come with android 5.0 or 5.1. Why wait for samsung to decide whether they may or may not release android 5.0, when you could get Cyanogen and already have 5.0 better than what Samsung could offer? Cyanogen is the complete vanilla android experience plus many more added features, for example an acending ringtone that starts at a low volume then gradually gets louder, allowing talkback to shout your caller id loud and clear. Or how about total ram and processor control, letting you save a lot more battery in those situations where you have low battery and you know youre far from a charger? No problem, allocate less of your processor on your phone, yeah it may run a hair slower, but you could squeeze at least an extra hour ontop of your existing battery life. Put simply, stock android is a much better experience over what Samsung gives you, and since you have an 24, cyanogen is the way to go. If youre interested I would be happy to help you flash Cyanogen on your
phone. Its not the simplest process in the world, but its not too difficult either. Whether you have cyanogen or not, as far as home screens, the best launcher Ive found is nova launcher. It has great accessibility and the premium version has an addon that allows you to add an unread badge to app icons, similar to ios, e.g messaging: 5 unread. And it will be read out by talkback.
