Re: Steam and how it works?

Thanks @Mayana, appreciate it!Yeah, I actually do have that flag enabled, and I remember planning to write that, but I guess my brain just wanted to eat dinner by that time.Just remember that having this flag is less secure as literally anyone could access your properties and see your user info right there in clear daylight, though if your computer is secured well with a password or PIN required on each sleep, plus you're careful on the Internet, your chances are much slimmer.

Re: Steam and how it works?

I agree, audiogames can be good but videogames will always beat them in turms of quolity but that's because videogames have huge teams behind them.

Re: Steam and how it works?

Thanks everyone. After reading your excellent posts I have realised steam is not for me,   So my quest for my own holy grail "Football manager" will have to carry on.What i have sadly noticed over the past 10 years of my blind life nothing much has moved on in quality since 2010. the first ever audio game i ever played was grizzly gulch and i would still have it in the top 10 audio games list.I am talking about development quality by the way, people either release games half finished, too short, or buggy as hell.I might be too harsh as i am coming from a once sighted gamer but the lack of quality games for blind people is really sad because i think theres room for developers to make money if they would be prepared to make accessible tweaks.Sorry for the bitch fest. But I am craving a football manager game for a long time.   I played my first fm game in 1982 on the commodore 64.Good times.

Re: Steam and how it works?

@DJEPIC has already written an amazing post and there isn't much to add, except to emphasize that you should probably enable Steam's auto-login feature. To do this, find the shortcut on your desktop and open its properties. There, find the field labeled "Target" (it should be the one you are in as soon as the properties open), go to the end of it, press space, and add this:-login Username Password -no-dwriteWhere of course you replace the username and password with whatever they are in your case.Another thing I've found very useful in getting Steam to work is the scan mode in an NVDA add-on called ObjPad. With it, I was able to access the buttons at the top of the window (Store, Library, Community, Username), which open additional menus once you move your mouse focus on them (NVDA+NumPadDivide). And no, most games on Steam are not accessible. This is a platform for games for sighted people, there just happen to be a few accessible things on it as well. The accessible ones I can think of right now are Code 7, A Blind Legend, Alt-Frequencies, Sequence Storm, Skullgirls, Slay the Spire (check it's database entry for the mods you'll need to install). There is also a whole lot of fighting games that are playable using some menu memorization and OCR, such as the Street Fighter games or Injustice: Gods Among Us. You can find some info about them in this topic where people are discussing which games are worth getting during the summer sale.Yeah, there is a summer sale going on right now. And it ends on July 9th. So if you plan on buying something, I really recommend you do so soon, because some games are discounted by as much as 75 % right now.

Re: Steam and how it works?

Okay, let's answer your questions one by one. So what is Steam?Steam is an online game distribution platform developed by Valve Corporation. It was originally just intended to cell Valve's own games, but later expanded. From Steam, you can purchase, download and install any game in your country catalog (plus its DLC, soundtrack, user-created content, and more) right to a (Windows in this case) computer. The advantages to Steam is that it is a single program, and Valv takes control over it ultimately, so you as a consumer don't have to worry about where else to get your games (unless you wanted a more-accessible solution, more on that later). Also, since it is basically governed by Valv, you won't get viruses like you might downloading games from different sites. The disadvantages may be that the client may not be accessible for you (as I've heard people's mileages vary). Also, remember that Steam is mainstream, so you cannot expect every game to be playable, let alone accessible at all. How do I get started?Head on to Steam's official website and create an account when prompted. I did so long ago, so I'm not sure if that damn annoying CAPTCHA's still It didn't have an audio option. If this is the case, attempt to use a CAPTCHA-solving add-on or tool. The website is generally straight-forward, though some more headings or landmarks would be appreciated. So what about the client? The client is basically just the Steam website all over again, though it's able to show a home page of games you play, updates, ETC. You don't actually need to use the Steam client, past logging In, because though the Steam client behaves like the website in some ways, you can remotely download from the Steam website, or even a mobile device logged in to the same account on the Steam Mobile app.Click to download the client on the website. Run the setup file as usual. When you come to the language selection, make sure you select English, even if it's already selected. This is just a Steam bug. If (for whatever reason) Steam still isn't in English when you launch it, access the properties of the Steam shortcut your running from and type a space after the last character then:"-language ", without the quotes. You can replace English with your preferred. Right then. We've got a Steam account, plus the Steam client. We're all good from here, right?Um, no! Because people like to be real nice, I've seen that the Steam client accessible changes from person to person. In the best case, your Steam window will just act as a normal browser mode website, and you can use all the standard screen reader hotkeys you know and love. The worst case? The window just doesn't do In that case, you'll want to use the Steam remote downloading feature, but I'll wait to explain that in case this actually works. If everything works fine, you can search for games, and purchase and install them.I hope this helped. Feel free to ask any other questions if I didn't cover something clearly enough, or I just didn't cover something at all you'd like to know.By the way, I believe @2 is referring to this article, which once again, you should also read.

Steam and how it works?

Hi guys I was wondering if someone can explain the concept of steam to me.The reason I ask is because there is a football manager game on there I would really love to play.Firstly is Steam totally accessible with a screen reader? or is it for people with limited sight? How would a complete first timer to steam would go about getting on my computer? Are all the games on there accessible or just a select few? This could be the answer for me,  I have been searching for 10 long years for an accessible football manager game  which has baffled me as the games are primarily text based. Please don't suggest hat trick because apart from WEBL if find browser games in the main to be cumbersome and boring to play.
