Re: Super Mario 64 Blindfolded Speedrun

That's obviously a great way to do it and I have lots of respect for people who did this, but when a game is only playable when we learn exactly how much distance a wall punch brings you and when we then memorize how many wall punches will get you to the next turning point, I think a game would stop to be fun for me.

Re: Super Mario 64 Blindfolded Speedrun

@10Muscle memory and practice are definitely factors, and tedium, but that could also be up to the fact that they insist on doing straight runs with no breaks. While they do seem to use cues and some memorization, for the most part they try to rely on what they call normalization, or controlled input. Things like the set distance you move by punching a wall, getting hit, etc. to reduce uncertainty as much as possible, but that varies from game to game. The video on the Blind Brotherhood I posted goes into a bit more detail on their processes, and they often publicly post their guides and strategies online for others. For example, the Portal playthrough has his strats notes in the description [here], which includes all the movements, cues, and steps he does to complete the blindfolded playthrough, a whole blueprint.

Re: Super Mario 64 Blindfolded Speedrun

@6 What you're missing here is that this only works for them because they have years and years of practice playing it sighted. They can visualize every map, every movement, how quick they are, how many milliseconds to hold a button and so on and I think when you try to learn that as a blind person, it gets so tedious you'd never want to touch the game again.

Re: Super Mario 64 Blindfolded Speedrun

Frame perfect is more a question of spamming, timing, and positioning, not necessarily one of visual precision. If anyones interested in the Blindfolded Brotherhood community and how they operate, you can checkout [this] video, which also has links to their discord channel [here] and website [here].What was also really interesting watching that video is that one of the speedrunners, katun24, actually completed a glitchless blindfolded run of Portal in 4 hours and 34 minutes, I dug up the video [here] for anyone whos interested.

Wow. Thanks for sharing. That means those games are fully playable for us if we know what the different sounds means and the layout of the levels. Amazing stuff for sure. Thanks for sharing.

Super Mario 64 Blindfolded Speedrun

Someone shared [this] with me a few days ago, it features a member of a blindfold speedrunning community playing during the Awesome Games Done Quick fundraiser. He blasts through Super Mario 64 in 39 minutes by pulling off a series of consecutive exploits in sequence, using the music, audio cues like punches and steps, timing, and other tricks which may sound familiar to some folks here to position and orient himself and correct for mistakes he occasionally makes in pulling off the exploits.
