First of all, thanks to the staff for the RP points. Found myself logged in longer than I ment to last night. Anyway, Kind of wondering where this whole RP story will go next. Funny I was thinking about going in for a bit of mining before this story started. anyway, Got to meet up with someone to take it to the next step. Anyway how different is artifact hunting from other space based muds?

Pebble sifting and atmospheric testing are both popular activities that can be done without a ship. Salvaging is popular and done with a ship. Mail delivery has recently been boosted and is also done with a ship. Also, we have done a points swap with the atmospheric testing.Feel free to ask questions through supports, or over the channels. I don't frequent the site to answer here but, will eventually get to it if someone else doesn't.Thanks.

Re: Vast Horizon (new game)

This has been a popular note of concern so I will post here. Over the last two weeks, we have made several points adjustments with space combat, artifacts, and likely something I am forgetting. Today we have just finished adding more cargo, salvage speed, and recovery tool upgrades. This is to put in place a few upgrades for those with lower point values. However, there are still some rather high point value upgrades. We have a couple more ideas given to us for balancing that we plan to look into but I would say our work with these things is over 90% done.Again, thanks for the feedback, we hope these adjustments will work out well for those who decide to play the game.I am not going to get into the habit of always posting these changes here and am not certain of the policy on that. I wanted to share these bits of information as it seemed to be one of the sticking points. Having been open a month, we're hard at work to make improvements and feedback is what helps that get done. We are very appreciative to those who share their thoughts with us.

Yeah, so I haven't been on lately for two reasons. I've been busy, but also, I'm just not liking the style of gameplay. It's like they're taking up contradictory positions. We dont' want you to grind, so we limit the number of certain activities per day. Buut, it takes forever and a week to get to even the first upgrade. It's just disheartening and demotivating. And, it's trying to have your cake and eat it too.

During this meeting, those attending resoundingly voted to use the signs we had begun to put in place for important shops and not worry about a map compromise.I don't know if you have a current character with the game but if so, your feedback in a support ticket is welcome. However I've always been told that once the event is over, then, you don't use that shiny thing. Basically what I'm saying is yes, okay, staff don't get short cutsBUT.kind of sends mixed messages, .e. okay it happened once, but...For ground combat, I just feel like it is so lacking. It's just..I can't put my finger on why though, maybe it';s the lack of messages, honestly, it's just you shoot. Wait 4.00 seconds, A dart explodes as it hits. That to me doesn't really make it enjoyable, or the apparent coin flip of dodge or not.Oh believe me it's a design choice. But I also feel like it encourages more grinding and less RP, especialy with a small population though. I get it's a design choice. And I've been gatekept from at least one activity by a player as well, which limits my playing even further however, which is a much bigger issue when it's a smaler population however.@Xenothrax: tHEY DI PUT UP wayfinder signs to counter that though

I understand. It's just a bit discouraging that the easiest activity to get started with, salvaging, only gives 1 productivity point, and you need 1000 or so to get better disassembling tools. Also, as Jace said, when you're new to the game, and asking where certain locations are (not just in Oria, but on other planets and the like), being told to "just explore" is off putting.

@JaceK, we aren't planning to give staff everything. We did have to do the ship, which belongs to the science department, to begin this event. The reason being is this particular event is how we will be introducing something for the pilots that I cannot disclose here because it's not yet come to fruition. As for the ground combat, it will pan out into more complexity as time goes on.As for sifting, the points have been adjusted some but can be kept on the list to look at again. We have done quite a bit of combat point adjustments over the last several days.As for it taking awhile to get upgrades, this is the style of game we chose. We understand it won't be liked well for everyone, but there will be those who enjoy it.Thanks for all the feedback as it will help us continue development in various directions.

Re: Vast Horizon (new game)

but no, it's not the RP I mind in VH. It's the hunch I have that the staff need to waard you RP points to get anywhere with it. Which, okay, full disclosure, I staff on another RP game, but I'm not okay with worry about somebody looking over my RP and going mmm...nah, not giving out points for that...If I'm wrong, do correct me, but that's the feeling I get after having not logged in for a few days, thanks RL/getting sucked into other games.Don't get me wrong. Systems wise, it is good, and I'm all for progression at a reasonable rate, but, but...See, my other major gripe with the issue is, and no I'm not staff on VH so I don't get to seee behind the curtain but I was told flat out, staff chars don't have shortcuts. Which fine, I get it. Then I'm seeing Michelle Faro rock up with a Voyager class ship (3000 science), and there is no way she could have got that in the time the game's been open at all doing some quick and dirty maths. No, my issue is, okay. Every event is prety much a similar formula.Go somewhre, fight something, RP aftewards. I'd like. Just once. Just /once/ an event to not include any combat. The ground combat is dull and absolutely unejoyable IMHO, and needs a giant rework, it's literaly type shoot, wait 4 seconds, flip a coin to see if you dodge an attack or not. Also I'm not a fan of oh let's OOC restrict people from doing stuff. Instead of yelling at people to not give new pilots acrapton of money, I get it, staff want people to work for things /but/ the payouts are so low I don't blame folks for just getting a ton of money and going yeah, I'l take that rather than grind and hit the activity caps per day, which stops you doing activities past a certain point. I get it. You're meant to earn things, but...

Re: Vast Horizon (new game)

So I've been thinking on this while playingI like the RP, I like the Rp when the mechanics are not interfering with it. Let me explainThe RP around the event yesterday was great, I love the twists and turns that are going on, but..The event, mechanics wise itself IMHO left a lot to be desired. It went like this...Fly to new planet, sit in the lounge on a sweet ship, talk about it. Which I'm fine with, we had a laugh about IC problems and people getting lost and a joke about my character's knack for that, which I'm good withh. The problem came when it was time to explore and group up. It boiled down to something I personally don't find fun. The ground combat system played a huge part in both this and the zombie invasion event. But there was one giant difference...This event was not, IMO fun in terms of the combat. I don't find moving from room to room on the grid and just slaying enemies fun, if I want that I'll go play a hack and slash MUD honestly. To me it defeats the point of an RPI game when the combat system is, literally, walk in room, type shoot whatever, wait for roundtime to end, repeat until either the thing you're shooting at dies, or you run out of ammo, or you get knocked out. That to me is not fun at all. Alright the premise of being jumped by Kiown scouts was a good setup, and it led to fun RP /after/ the fact, but to me the whole combat system ruined it.I mean, okay, I liked the first event simply becausethe enemies had a good IC reason to be a huge number and had no questionable mechanics up their sleeves. I just personally don't enjoy ground combat, period because of the dull nature of it. If it's worked on to spice it up then I may enjoy it more, but just typing shot over and over and over again, waiting four seconds, typing it again like I said, isn't fun in the least to me.

Re: Vast Horizon (new game)

Exactly. In help points it specifically says sifting is for science so I'd be fine with having more points for science than productivity. I mean I've been salvaging/sifting et al and already past 200 productivity which, honestly, I feel I've got there a bit too quickly for my liking given how long I've been playing. 10 productivity points a day from sifting alone is IMHO pushing it a bit much. I'd be okay with flipping the numbers on sifting, so using my current numbers at 230 pebbles sifted, I would for example get 5 sci and .6 productivity which would, I feel, better suit the whole science focused bit of sifting, you are, after all, sifting for pebbles for science reasons, actually on that note why do you even get productivity? Why don't you get science from salvaging since you're salvaging all sorts from ships?I mean, I;d be fine with salvaging giving reasonable science points, I'd be fine with sifting's points being changed as wel to better reflect how it's in the help files listed as a science activity yet is far more weighted towards productivity which to me does not add up

Re: Vast Horizon (new game)

Balance is hard and I get that yes. I'm going to put this in as a suport too so I can get feedback both here and on the game. So I swear I've asked this on newbie/cws but honestly I don't remember with how things have been going RL wise..but is there anything I can do to rack up science/combat points as quickly as productivity points? Because I feel like it's not balanced right now. I can just grab a freighter with my starting loan, go salvage and do that for, say, three hours and bang, lot of productivity, whereas I can't, to my knowledge, do the same for combat (having to rely on the combat system or buying a gun/ammo/etc) or science missions. So is there anything that I can do about this besides hit the cap of oh you've done your scans/sifts for the day and you've found three artifacts, here's 1.7 science point, plus the 1.2 from sifting, plus the 1.8 from scans?I'm asking because I feel like it forces you to play the game one particular way at current, salvage, salvagee, and then salvage. I feel like I have to either choose to go right, I'm gonna Rp and not grind points, or right I'm gonna focus on upping points and not RP. Which honestly to my way of thinking seems counter intuitive for an RPI game really. Don't get me wrong, I love the way things are set up activity wise, and for all I know there's activities planned to address this that I've no clue about, but as of /right now/ I feel like, ironically enoughth things are not balanced in the least with point distribution.I honestly feel like sifting needs reversing point wise from 5/1 and .6 and whatever pdoc/science to the other way around since sifting is explicitly stated as science under help points after all, not productivity, especially if you lok at the point values things need for science vs productivity. I'm not saying give us a stupidly high science point payout, but something to balance it out, an option that's an activity that'll let us gain science at a reasonable rate, or maybe peg productivity back a bit to level the playing field.

Right, you get 5 productivity and .5 science per sifting mission for example, okay, you can do two a day, fair enough...but you can do unlimited salvage and rack up productivity. Maybe I'm biased because I don't have an infinite way to grind science bar one activity I need to buy into.Related note, how come I can do infinite salvage when all the other missions are capped at a certain number a day though? Alright, yes, I can artifact hunt. But, I need to both buy equipment for that, and rent a ship for it because I am nowhere near being able to do that in my own ship.IMO the points need adjusting. For example. Archer: 0 productivity, 0 battle, 250 science, a lot of moneyThat's reasonable, if I could grind science like I could grind productivity

Re: Vast Horizon (new game)

Yeah but look at the distribution between productivity as compared to every other point. OK, 0.5 per atmo mission, fair enough as you can do 3 in a day and so that's 1.5 What are the rest though. Battle points don't subdivide at least that we can see. I know they do internally so we're not really sure how things stack up there. I'm not saying give more or less, but when the point requirements to purchase things are so high up and it takes a long time to get there, don't be surprised when people want to grind for it.

Re: Vast Horizon (new game)

Yeah the point distribution doesn't make a while lot of sense to me, and things seem to be awfully high up, for even the most minor upgrades. They want RP, but they put things far enough out of reach that you feel the need to grind to get there. So I'll admit that grinding is my weakness, because I see these things I want and I get laser focused in on it. I think if things came down points wise, at least the first couple tears, it might make people a little more willing to play more casually, but delve deeper into RP.On another note. I've written/rewritten the volume manager on my soundpack like four times now. The past three iterations I didn't like. My goal was to make it easy for anyone to add a new trigger, and I didn't feel thatthe past three lived up to that expectation. This iteration, I can live with. It's not glamorous, but it works. You'd write something like this to play a soundplay{snd=communication/general", vol=cv"}Without the vol as the second argument, it would just default to a global value of 50 or something. You can also provide looping= and pan=  but again, they are optional, defaulting to off and in the center respectively. You also have three keys, F5 and F6 lower and raise the selected volume. F7 cycles between each of the volume categories.

Re: Vast Horizon (new game)

All they mean is don't make your directions sound like a speedwalk. You can say, "Natasha's shopping center is on the eastern side of the city on Drake road. To get to drake Road, you take LeeLee up to Avont, turn right on Swan, then turn south on Drake."I don't think they will slow progress now, it is already a lot slower than most games in terms of progression. They didn't want someone to get the top upgrades in a month, and I think even the grinders won't be able to do that. We will see though. At least if you grind twenty-three hours a day, you will just eventually burn out and stop playing.

Re: Vast Horizon (new game)

So my though s on the game more.Okay first offf,  I don't like players braging oh I got to such and such point money wise, given the staff are very concious of balance, I don't want that one person to hurt it for the rest of the players by being able to get wealthy by grinding activities. I'd like to see something done about that honestly, and /not/ lowering payouts a la typical blindie space MOO solution because that's not a solution, that hurts everyone and makes it harder for new players to get going and get things.I feel like a few of the OOC rules are oddd choices, like not being able to give large amounts of money, but nowhere does it (that I could find) say where the line is, so if I give somebody five grand to cover a train ticket is that breaking that rule? Or the one about don't give out directions because it 'removes the exploration aspect'I disagre hugely with the latter one. I see new people asking time and again oh where's so and son, as a new player being told oh go explore the city would be off puting to be told oh we can't tell you where something is. I get the why of it. I justdon't agree on it at all honestly. Yes I've been around Oria but I don't know every square inch of the city. Okay maybe the solution to that is destination finders, fair enough but you can't get those without a ship, and you can't get that without aloan so..at least initially you're wandering around with no idea where things are, and if you can't be told where things are going by the 'do not give out explicit directions' rule, it can absolutely come off as off puting to new people.I'm trying to wrap my head around the points ratios. It seems like to me there's far more, at current, activiies that give out productivity than science. For example sifting is 5 for productivity and much less for science when a lot of the upgrades have insanely high science and pdoductivity, it just seems to me like it's set up to gain productvity quicker than science. However I do love the amount of freedom players get and the spontaneous plot things that happen. Like my whole fuck Gonrah starting off an IC incident with the OH and Gonrah, Gonrah backing down.I also love the staff got s firm grip on the story as well, which is great having been on games where the staff give in to player arguments

Re: Vast Horizon (new game)

Lol, y'all have one, at least IDK, has anyone confirmed it works, I had one person tell me it didn't, but they didn't really give me enough to go on to track it down. Actually, in the latest CM, they aren't releasing the ZIP format, and I detest multiple installations of the thing as it doesn't play nice with finding plugins, as it encounters the first registry key and thinks that's valid for them all. But in such a case, it would be less problematic until the proper end release. That means I may actually have to build mushclient from source to get a suitable bundle I can package up.I still have to fix all of the triggers I've done thus far... I am not looking forward to it. At least I didn't make it worse. At least it's only around 40 and not 500. Yeah next time I'll back up the damn file before I go running regular _expression_ powered search/replace on it.

Re: Vast Horizon (new game)

Well I broke my SP. Refactored the play wrapper so that it can take named args in preparation for adjustable volumes and the like. But now it uses a table constructor so when you call the function, you do it like so play{snd="activities/sifting/sifting_found_mineral"} which means you can give all the arguments in any position. But, in an effort to automate things, I thought to use a regex to replace every play() with a play{} leaving the contents in tact. Well, it didn't work and I didn't notice until after it saved. So now I ahve to re-add the sounds to 40 something riggers.

These can either be done globally (via CTRL+ALT+G or ALT+F then G), or through the plugins list (CTRL+SHIFT+P or ALT+F then U). MUSH reader, output_functions, channel_history and lua audio.3. There is no user-friendly volume control, sorry about that, it's on the road map for sure. If you need to change the volume, enter this command \gv=n where n is in the range 1 to 100. There will also be separate volume controls for different things coming down the line.4. I made this to suit my needs, not anyone else's. I'm happy to accept well thought out suggestions, but if I don't like it, I ain't doing it. You're free to take this and use it as a base for your own if you like, so long as when you release it, you credit me somewhere pertinent, such as in a readme file or on a website.5. This will probably never be as rich a sound pack as others. I just really don't care about music and ambiance, and I'm too lazy to do them.6. I can't do things like automatic this, monitoring that and taking some action on your behalf like I do on other MUD packs, because the rules of Vast Horizon forbids it. In other words, I can't make a script that monitors your ship for damage and lets you know via an alarm when it is critical, nor can I make something similar to monitor your suit's oxygen supply and let you know when it is low.7. This pack was made such that it complies with the game's policies. I disclaim any and all responsibility over what folks might do with it once they have it in their hands. Similarly, I disclaim any and all responsibility should the pack destroy your computer or should some disaster befall you soon after downloading/opening the pack. All that being said, if you like it, let me know. Similarly, if you don't like a particular sound, let me know. I will fix it when I get a chance. But it will be on my time. Remember, this is for me first, and everyone else second. If you encounter any problems, or need help installing it let me know. probably the best way is through discord, or here in this topic. My discord is ironcross#8090. I don't use skype anymore, and rarely check emails, more rare still do I check the forum PM's.

Re: Vast Horizon (new game)

Yeah it's a little confusing, but yes, it's definitely RPE given that policy you just placed here. If it were RP encouraged, you wouldn't have to RP even in public. If it were RPI, you'd lose your OOC channels and maybe even rooc. Basically, RPI is the most immersive you can make it, and RP encouraged is the most lenient while you're still trying to foster some roleplay. There's also roleplay accepted, which means that if you and others want to, fine, but they don't really cater to RP.

Re: Vast Horizon (new game)

Yes CR was RP enforced, what are you talking about? You're expected to be in character on the radios and in person in world. I severely doubt that's changed, but as I haven't been on there in a good while, I could be wrong. But I am not wrong about the RPE, because I used to work there as a host, lol. We did everything we could to foster good RP, but aside from some diamonds in the rough, to be frank, most of it sucked. when we set up RP classes, the people who really could have used the help never showed up, and the people who already knew how to RP did show up. So it never really reached the targeted demographic. Here's the difference between Rp encouraged, RP enforced, and RPI or roleplay intensive just so we're all on the same page. The first is self-explanatory, you're encouraged to rolaplay, but not required to do so. RPE or roleplay enforced means that you are required to roleplay and to keep your interactions in character in world at all times. This covers face to face encounters, as well as other communication media that are marked as in-character. Radios, phones, magic pendants, what have you. There are usually OOC channels as well. RPI is the most strict. There are generally not OOC channels except possibly a newbie or questions and answers channel which are kept on topic. Staff are quick to stop OOC messages appearing in world whether that be through long distance communication methods, or face to face encounters. So if you can go onto CR and use your radio over the general and be like, "hey bitch, did you watch Stranger Things last night?", and get away with it, then it's not roleplay enforced. But if you'd get smacked down for that, then it is. Same for face to face encounters.

Space combat can become a drag because yes it all does feel the same, and cr is one of those places that made it different with way more commands than was needed. Keeping track of ships is easiest with sc because of the tracking system. Someone mentioned rp being a drag it can be sometimes. I guess we will see how things play out.

Re: Vast Horizon (new game)

So thoughts on space combat as isI'm not a fan of it. It goes back to Liam's point in the CR topic about accessibility. Not just can a blind person use it (yes they can) but can other people use it? To me. No, not for somebody with other disabilities.Because the combat system is laid out like this. You go into combat and fly manually, okay, that's fine. Flying is easy enough with the numpad or other keys. That's not where I have issue with the system. My issue is that there's a lot to do, and not much time to do said things in. In short order you have to.1. Target a ship2. Aim at coords3. Check if the target's moved4. If so adjust your aim5. See 3 and 4Once the target is still, aim, and fire. That to me excludes people who have their speech slowed down, or slower reactions, or various motor disabilities.Oh just use a soundpack, I can hear people say. That excludes deaf or hard of hearing players.

So here are my thoughts. I sort of like the game so far. I think it could be something great. More help files / activities so that things don't begin to feel like such a drag should totally be a thing. I am not a fan of the way the description thing works myself. If there are choices for certain things why not have it that way all the way through and just give you an option to customize certain things if you want. It's like somethings were well thought out and others half baked. I Don't want to be rich in a week but I really hope gaining doesn't take forever. Hopefully there will be stylish clothes or away to design things like that. The player base seems nice enough for sure.

I've just created a character and I have to say, the way you need to write your description is way to much work.I mean, don't get me wrong here but having to remember all the percent commands on top of having to write a description is not the way I want to start out a game.I'm willing to write out a description but not if I need to remember all these commands and such while having to write out a decent description.either have it where you follow a prompt accept that you have to fill it in yourself or jave it free style.

Re: Vast Horizon (new game)

If you want to install the soundpack, first you have to create your character on VIP Mud. Make sure that when you do it, in the title field of where you put the name Vast Horizon, that you  don't put a space between Vast Horizon. Then after that, you will then have to take everything from the soundpack folder and put it in to the VIP Mud directory in documents. After that, once you've taken the folders within the soundpack directory and put them in the main VIP directory, you can start the game as usual with your new character and then the soundpack will work, you know it works if you get "Soundpack loaded" before anything else comes up.

Re: Vast Horizon (new game)

I got lost in the jungle when I wanted to leave the stream after I was done sifting. I'm Lukas Jonad on there. I think it's a great game though, they've done a great job with it.
