I'm also using IBM because the Python 3 version seemed to crackle and I don't think that's a volume issue as IBM doesn't do it. Anyway, I'm sorted. Now for Vocalizer expressive.

@nidza07 OMGOMG thank you soo much. Now I don't have to go crazy! And sorry for writing like an insane child.Edit: Odd. After disabling the UTF8 option, it re-enables. From what I can see, it won't turn off.Edit 2: English UK works for this and I have fixed the issue. Note that the UTF8 option looked like it wasn't disabling because it seems to re-enable after any key has been pressed aside from enter (which will click OK).

Re: Warning about the newest NVDA update

No. This is related to unicode and app locale issues. Go to your control panel, then region, and on the administrative tab choose change system locale. Make sure it is set to English US. If it is, also make sure that you did not enable the UTF 8 beta support in that same dialog. If you did, disable it, restart your PC and Eloquence should read all simbols correctly again. Note: The system locale setting may work with other languages Eloquence supports too, but as I don't speak anything else that's something someone else would have to confirm.

@Munawar, I'd agree with you except the Python 3 version has the same issue. In fact, so does the SAPI 4 version of Eloquence I have. The only version that didn't have this issue was Code Factories so I'm wandering if I can change this? I'm not even sure how this started as it didn't used to happen. My gut's telling me it had something to do with NVDA 2019 but again I can't pinpoint it.

Lol. For whatever reason my ibm works fine, and I thought they updated it to fix all of its original bugs from earlier. Itwill perform better when they completely due away with all the leftover python2 code they have because of 2019.2.1 usage. Though it isn't just because of me actually owning a licensed Kurzweil1000 that I keep bringing it up, it's the only commercial package I know of that actually has an open IBM library that isn't bound to it specifically, i.e. sapi4 compliant, similar to how the Dectalk api was open for use by screen-readers when they used to ship Dectalk with it. There has to be a cheaper package around somewhere that actually has one, indeed there's Robert Betz's games if those were still around, which by the way were some good games for their time.

It's an old synth that's still preferred by a lot of us, including me, and it's not like it's Google's crazy voice synth that sounds nearly indistinguishable from a human voice. I know I'm not the license holders, someone's gonna probably say i'm "entitled" blah blah blah, I don't care about all that. I'd happily pay $5 to have the files and just put 'em on a disk or something so I never need to buy it again

Re: Warning about the newest NVDA update

All these years of the blind community using Eloquence and people are now suddenly asking what it's made of. Lol! Probably the most easy to bundle tts if it were easier to license in other applications, i.e. if Wizard Software were still around. Then again, Voxin got a license to distribute so they have to be in a distribution agreement with some entity other than Nuance for it to be so cheap.Re, copying Eloquence: You don't necessarily need to copy Eloquence to use the driver. Locate your Eloquence library. For Kurzweil1000 users, it's "C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\SpeechWorks\ETI-Eloquence 6.1\eci.dll"That's all there is to it.

Re: Warning about the newest NVDA update

Hi.@Zersiax like I stated previously, the only legal SAPI5 version of Eloquence that's out there is Code Factory's own Eloquence package. However if you download the 7-day trial direct from Code Factory's website, you won't get Chinese, Japanese, and Korean language options, instead you'll get the usual 10 language options. However, if you download the 7-day trial from Computer Room Services in the UK, who is a third-party reseller of the product, you will get Chinese, Japanese, and Korean language options.

Re: Warning about the newest NVDA update

For those who are wondering what languages this IBM TTS driver supports, it supports (American English, British English, Castilian Spanish, Latin American Spanish, French, French Canadian, German, Italian, Brazilian Portuguese, and Finish). It also supports Chinese, Japanese, and Korean (you'll need CHS.SYN, CHSROM.DLL, JPN.SYN, JPNROM.dll, KOR.SYN, and KORROM.dll). To my knowledge the only way of getting those files is Code Factory's Eloquence SAPI 5, that is, if you get it from Computer Room Services, since Code Factory's own installer removed those files.I will warn you now that those languages will not read out the special characters associated with them. As far as I know I haven't found a way to make them do that, even though ironically the SAPI5 version does that.

You can also find ECI.dll in Colton's TTS app, and I believe also in jaws somewhere. So you could say, download the jaws demo and just get the DLL that way. No need to purchase anything.

for those still not knowing how to setup the driver.find a file called eci.dll. this can be found if you have used eloquence before upgrading. it's in the ad-on folder under %appdata% roaming nvda ad-ons inside the synth drivers folder. There also should be .synth files. copy these out as well.Once you have this file copied somewhere, go upgrade your ersion of nvda to the latest version (2019.3).Now go install the driver and enter the settings dialogue. find ibm TTS in the categories list and hit the browse button. Here, select the eci.dll file you previously copied. Now, you should copy all the voice files from the previous eloquence ad-on into the %appdata nvda ibmTTS synth drivers folder.Restart your nvda and eloquence should pop up under your change synthesizer in the speech section of the nvda settings.I hope this helped. if you can't find the eci.dll, go install other programs that contain eloquence. Curzweil appears to be one of them as others have said.

For some reason, my latest release had it.download it hereKurzweil1000 uses an Eloquence 6.1 library, to my knowledge, the only one in a still commercially maintained package that isn't tied specifically to the application. The same was true when they bundled Dectalk, the dapi was still open so you could have easily used Dectalk with screen readers that had an Access32 drivers, and there was also documentation on making Dectalk sing. Plus PCS dos Game demos of course that used to come on the disk way back when.

Re: Warning about the newest NVDA update

That's why people are saying to use the IBM add-on with your existing ETI.dll for NVDA 2019.3 instead of the updated Eloquence driver itself. I did this before I downgraded to 2019.2 due to no Notepad++ support and it worked fine. No crashes. The IBM add-on is easy to setup and get working. if you want the latest add-on IBM package, don't download the release on Git tagged Latest Release. That version doesn't have a .nvda-addin asset. Go a couple releases back I believe though I don't remember now which one I grabbed.

Also, I can confirm that the Eloquence within a registered copy of Kurzweil1000, one which contains no drm, was sapi-compliant and not tied specifically to the application, is usable in the IBM driver. To remain fully legal, you are going to need to buy your own copy ot Kurzweil1000. Either that, or contact Code Factory and ask them to remove the non-transparent persistent license checks that may impact people with skay internet.

Re: Warning about the newest NVDA update

The author of the Unspoken 3d sounds addon was Bryan Smart and Austin Hix. IT was then forked by someone else (Mushirav I believe) to be an audio themes addon with the same underlying engine. It has since not been updated for NVDA 2019.3. I believe though that the speech refactoring and the new speech subsystem will enable the future implementation of earcons directly into NVDA, that can be handled and timed a lot more accurately than the addon.

Intent being taken into account goes straight out the window with the word sensors you guys have in place, because now nobody can link to that site for anything, legal or not.

Hi.This is silly, the page says as far as the author knows, the software is legal.Yes there's other things on that sight that might not be but surely that's for the person to figure out and if they download it it's not to do with the audiogames.net team?I think this sencering of information is sillly and actually harms blind people more than it helps. Some of us cannot update because we can't use these "real" sounding voices and eloquence is the best way for us to go forward but with you taking away our write to post links, you're stopping us from using the latest features of NVDA.Yes people can look it up but it's not easy to do and clicking a link is a lot simpler.I think this modiration thing is being taken way to far, nothing is going to happen if someone clicks on a link, at least it won't happen to the website. No one is checking over the thing and this site isn't as important as you seam to think it is.

Re: Warning about the newest NVDA update

@Brad:You'd be correct. Any python3 exclusive addon is meant to run in 2019.3 and future builds. That being said, if you buy the codefactory addon, you are technically able to run the license on two machines, though you need to watch out for the persistent license check drm that is not very transparent. If you plan to carry it around on a portable NVDA, remember to activate on the computer you're using, and deactivate when you're done. I don't know for sure if when activating on a one-time use machine *a library for example), you can just simply run a trial license and call it a day, but that's how things currently stand now.

@Turkce_rap: People have said where to get the latest Eloquence. If you want a drm-free distribution, find a legal way of obtaining Viavoice and use the Eloquence addon that contains the interface without the library. We cannot provide that to you. A copy of Kurzweil1000, IBM Homepage Reader maybe, now those can provide it to you no problem. Kurzweil is the only currently maintained commercial package that contains an Eloquence that legally can be used in any other application.

Re: Warning about the newest NVDA update

@Munawar: IN fairness, I was hoping that NV Access would not have made the 2019.3 an auto-update. For all their warnings and prep-time, you would think that they would have followed suit by not forcing the update out until a few weeks later, given the significance of this update. So they do lose points for that in my opinion, as they could have had the auto-update sunset at 2019.2.1. This way, people who haven't been engaged in the NVDA listserve/social media interaction still know what they're getting into. I honestly cannot blame anyone who has been/is off Twitter anyway, it's a shitshow as it stands. Speaking of, Q has released Remote2.3 , giving full support to 2019.3. I was going to get in contact with Azslow concerning Sibiac, but people are already storming the thread with when's the new version coming out, when's it coming out, stuff like that. This one is going to be harder to update because of its many moving parts, including the dated Tesseract engine that was primarily builtin the python2 stages anyhow. I am willing to wait.

Re: Warning about the newest NVDA update

@connor142The voice files that @Dan_Gero are talking about are the IBM ViaVoice TTS language/voice files. If you recall, ViaVoice TTS is basically a repackaged/rebranded version of Eloquence, so to speak. The easiest/legal way of obtaining the files are to either get a trial version of IBM HomePage Reader or searching for the actual ViaVoice speech recognition software either on a CD or download. But, since the TTS is basically Eloquence, the DLL file and the actual voice files should work (you can just use the Eloquence files from anything with Eloquence, as long as it has ECI.DLL, or in the case of IBM TTS, IBMECI.DLL).

Re: Warning about the newest NVDA update

Thanks for posting this OP. It prevented me from upgrading to 2019.3 and I came to find out later that Notepad++ isn't supported in the new version which is a showstopper for me. I'm one of those people that upgrades NVDA without checking the change log first.I did eventually try it out and did notice that NVDA has done their due diligence and noted which add-ons will break in the new version, so if I hadn't seen this post that message in the installer would have stopped me also. But thanks for coming here to post the info and give us a heads-up. For people like me who aren't tuned into social media and things (despite a couple on here saying NVDA hasn't exactly been silent about this breaking change, implying that everyone should have known anyway,) these types of posts are very helpful. I had no idea until I saw this post that 2019.3 is the Python 3 upgrade.

Hey Connor. The IBM Driver on Davidacm's Github Page is a better work around for getting Eloquence. It doesn't come with the actual voice files because it's illegal for it to, but as long as you have the voice files it's easy enough to add them in through the settings dialogue. The addon can be found on the page I linked to above in the readme.md.

Re: Warning about the newest NVDA update

ok, two points here. To those who keep saying that nv access should have thought about add ons not working, no. they didn't have to. Addons are third party programs and thus not the responsibility of nv access to maintain or worry about, they have to worry about enough as it is with the limited funding they run this on. You should stop crying about how little they thought of you and your shiny addons, and show at least some apreciation that you don't have to give $1000 to fs, or $100 every year, just to use a computer like everyone else. One more thing though, I do wonder if there's a way to get the python 3 version of eloquence working properly? Right now, it loves to crash frequently. Does anyone have a version that doesn't crash, or have a workaround for the crashes?

Re: Warning about the newest NVDA update

The NVDA developers did think of this. This is one of the reasons why, even though this update was released in 2020, it's called 2019.3. They decided to delay the release so that the majority of the addons could be updated. There are several that are still WIP, but most of the official addons have been updated, with others like speech history being finalized right now.The one last major holdout from what I'm aware is NVDA Remote, which is actually mostly updated. The problem right now is the developers. Other people did most of the work to port Remote, but now the developers are not communicating with the community to explain what they still need to do, why the update has not been released. NVAccess themselves don't seem to be very happy about this, but Remote isn't their responsibility even if the NVDA devs did do some of the work to port it over. NVAccess should not be responsible for addons that aren't necessary for the core functioning of NVDA. They already have enough to worry about in that regard, possibly more than they can handle. NVDA is still great, but I've noticed a downward spiral since 2018 in performance. I'm hoping that 2019.3 will fix some of these things, and that the modernization will pave the way to fixing more of them.

NVDA2019.3 was in desperate need of Python3's new potential as everyone knew. This port was no small weekend project, so don't go assuming it was one and that no thought went into this. Here's something to think about though. Their hard work still isn't your free lunch. Even if you can't donate, you are generally expected to assist the project in however way you can, which can and should be as simple as testing the alphas/betas, contributing feedback, and contacting NVDA addon developers during the months before when you had plenty of time to. Even then, there are genuine concerns about addons, which are definitely justified, indeed I can't upgrade myself because Sibiac, but I have been keeping 2019.3 betas around as portable for who knows how long. When they release these and ask for feedback, they actually, are looking, for feedback. These are people doing the project more or less grant/donation funded, and feedback makes a huge, huge difference. Some people really need to be, not necessarily more grateful, but cut the negligence a bit, i.e. waiting to the absolute last minute tto install 2019.3 instead of testing the betas and reporting this stuff. I don't suppose any of the legitimate complainers have any mission critical stuff to worry about, and even if they did, you literally have nothing to lose with a portable installation. The, quote, addon mess, is not NVDA's fault. The final release hasn't been out for one freaking week yet. Give it time before saying they should have thought about this mess.
