Re: Your thoughts about the Taptic engine in newer iPhones

I don't get the new stuff on the beta, I think it probably requires 8 or higher and I'm on a 7. Maybe there have been hardware changes to the taptic engine since then.

Your thoughts about the Taptic engine in newer iPhones

Your thoughts about the Taptic engine in newer iPhones

Hi, I hope this discussion can form around one of the few points I have written down, and if it’s around the later ones, I hope that I’m not posting this in the wrong room. About two months ago, I got the chance to upgrade my iPhone, and I got an iPhone 8, replacing my 6S. I’ve recently been thinking, though, about what really changed, besides just having software updates for a few more years and a faster processor. I have kinda started taking the taptic engine for granted. It has become a part of the experience of using my phone. I love how I get little clicks when doing certain actions, something as simple as activating a switch button, or typing on the keyboard. And lets not forget the home button itself. Thanks to IOS13 beta, I also get to experience what VO is capable of doing with the taptic engine. I especially love how VO can stop annoying me by ducking the audio of anything currently playing while Safari is loading a page, and continuously duckin and unducking it every second or so, because of the looping click sound that tells me if a page is loading. Now I just, quote on quote, feel, the page being loaded. Unfortunately, all these things are a part of Apple, all first party things. It’s a completely different story when it comes to apps downloaded from the app store. There are a few apps that do make use of the taptic engine in little suttle ways, like Youtube tapping you when all the content on a page has finished loading, little minor things like that. And there are apps that allow you to test the engine by  making clicking patterns when you press buttons. But I thought when I first herd of this back in 2016 with the iPhone7, that developers are going to make use of this in a more engaging way. I’m asking, is there any app that does use the taptic engine in such a way? More specifically I’m thinking of games. My first thought was Blackbox, and that was my only thought that has occured to me thus far. Blackbox did use it quite well, although I have beaten most of the challenges on my iPhone6S beforehand so there was no real excitement to it, just a bit of added depth. Actually, another game I can think of is Dusc, but the vibrations it uses can be felt in the same way with the 6S than with the 8, and quite frankly I don’t understand some of those minigames to begin with. That’s all I could come up with. Do you know of anything else that uses the taptic engine somewhat like this? My other question would be, why, then? Like, is it really hard to implement? Have developers just not been able to use it because of how hard it is to use? Or they want to use patterns that are not preprogrammed by Apple? I’m not actually sure on how to program the vibration motor so I may be saying nonsense here… Or, on the other hand, do a lot of people consider it nothing more than a gimic and just writing it off as something only Apple is really trying to push? I think this is the perfect time for more apps to begin using this stuff, because most people who buy iPhones nowadays have no choice but to buy one with the taptic engine abord, like me. What do you think? Thanks for reading.
