What I wasn't expecting was that it was lock to Amazon approved content. You could only get apps that were in the Amazon app store, there was a bunch of nice apps in Google Play that weren't in the Amazon store.I had a text file with a bunch of information that I wanted easy access to, so I put it on the Kindle. With standard Android, tapping on the file in the file manager openned it. On the kindle, nothing I did would open it. I eventually converted it to a Word document, then I could read it on the Kindle.At that time the only thing the Kindle gave you that a vanilla Android tablet with the Kindle app on it didn't was access to Amazon instant video. Now with the release of their instant video app for Android, that's not exclusive to Kindles any more.Today, I wouldn't bu y a Kindle tablet, I buy an Android tablet and load the Amazon apps, Kindle, Instant Video,etc. on it and have the best of both worlds.Oh, and yeah, I know that Apple TV is just another internet stream player like the original Roku players that first appeared about 8 years ago. I think there is still hope for us.And if Amazon want to be irrelevant, let them. They now have the choice to be on Apple TV, and if they choose not to, well, too bad for them, and Apple TV users.In the meantime you have iOS and/or Android; just stream to your set-top box of choice. It sucks, but it'll do. For Apple TV, you can share videos using iTunes, or music using iTunes Match. So with tools such as get_iplayer, BBC iPlayer can still be rendered on the big screen. Because, ultimately, TV--like so many things--is converging around the Internet. Sure, we've a long way to go before you can turn on the telly and begin streaming at once from your favourite approved mind-numbing supplier of dross public content over the airwaves, but I see no reason why it can't happen--indeed why it won't happen--over the Internet. This whole move to apps is already putting many more streams in front of people than has ever been possible with terrestrial telly.One of the reasons I think the Beeb liked the other guys so much is their app stores, and sure enough now that ATV has o ne, the BBC is talking about future development of an app. However, I think ChromeCast had the right idea all along: the box connects to your TV, and receives instructions from an iOS or Android device to stream. Therefore the dongle itself needs no intelligence; it's all on your smartphone. This was a very clever and successful way to achieve the desired result. No surprise, then, that Google is ready to pee all over it and get into the set-top-box game. The Beeb, however, offers streamed telly to all UK citizens, and until Apple TV has an app for that (the Beeb has thus far expressed a great deal of favouritism toward everybody else than Apple, for some reason) then there is nothing for me that I can't already do with a third-generation model. Except maybe iCloud Photos, though I'm not sure if the new ATV supports that yet either (but I imagine it does). Naturally, the third-gen probably won't ever support it, thus requiring a computer to be on in the house to actually get your photos and videos. Or streaming using AirPlay. Neither of which is particularly nice. apple tv 4th gen and TVOS9.0 hey i got the new apple tv 4th gen. looking forward to some great audio games to play since it has a nintendo wii-like controller mics touchpad and physical buttons all in one. voiceover works great on it. it has 64gigs storeage, 2gigs ram, dual core CPU and quad core GPU. runs TVOS9.0 and its app store already has over 1000 apps and games.
