Re: do you guys play any instromints
Re: do you guys play any instromints hm. I'm curious. What is the easiest instrimant to play? I briefly did drums. They weren't exact drums as I understood but I'll refer to them as such. you have to put them on your lap. on the left side there was a large opening and on the right was where you played. I sucked at it because I'm not fast enough when I have to slightly twist myself to the right and play, plus keep it from falling so. Re: do you guys play any instromints
Re: do you guys play any instromints Oh I have a charango. I have a few xylophones too, including a small trung from Vietnam and a pentatonic bamboo thing from Indonesia. I have a tongue drum too, which is like a slit drum but it's got like nine notes cut into it. I used to have a dumbek/darbuka, but it was aluminum and I didn't like the sound much, so I gave it to a friend. Eventually I want to get a ceramic one.Re: charangoIs that the Mel Bay book, "Metodo De Charango", "Charango Method", by Horacio Durán and Italo Pedrotti? If so I have it. I haven't gotten round to getting the chord charts out of it yet, but I'll see if I can get them soon, my wife just needs to get time to sit down and go through them with me so we can figure out what works and I can write them down.I've been kicking around the idea of setting up a site with accessible instrument stuff, I have no idea how useful it would be since I'd focus on all of the world things first and not necessarily the standard stuff like guitar and such. But I'd either put stuff up, so basically either accessible fingering charts or links to them, accessible chord info if I can get it, stuff like that. I'll try to come up with a place to put it and start working on it, as long as I know at least one other person might use it, that's good enough for me. If there's one of you, there are more of you hiding somewhere!Oh yeah, quena. I might be able to help you with it. I can try in text here or you can send me a private message thingy and we can get together on Skype or something, provided you can understand and speak English because sadly I don't know any other languages well enough to speak them, and I'm not that great at understanding either. I should really work on that one of these days I guess. I certainly don't claim to be any kind of authority, but I'll happily pass on whatever I know to anybody who's interested, do sound samples if somebody wants to hear an instrument, tell you where you can get one if I know, that sort of thing. Sure they call it an obsession, but what do they know, I ask you? Re: do you guys play any instromints @khomus finally someone else that is in to world music and world instruments. I'll say it right now. I'm not the best with instruments, but I intend to change that, with practice. For world instruments, I have a flamenco guitar, a charango from bolivia, a quena from bolivia, panpipes, a djembe, a maraca that a Cuban musician gave to me, it was a set until I lost one, didgeridoo, slit drum, mbira, and probably a few others. My favorite instrument has got to be the charango. Lessons for the charango are hard to come by. I had to by a book, which turned out to be a scanned image pdf. Only a few days ago did I get the idea of having someone take screenshots of the English portion of the book, it’s also in Spanish, and send them to me so I can ocr it with seeing A I. I’m very determined to learn the charango. I also have to have someone transcribe the cord charts for me. Not having cords has stopped me from doing much. I can play first octave on the andean quena, however I can not play second octave very well. Also working on learning guitar, which is easier since there is more available to help me with it. (really my national instrument huh)? But then I've started to play the guitar, then when I was on a parade was playing the xylophone, a little bit of the flute, the harmonica, the saxophone, the drums...But since I'm in quarantine I'm only playing the synthesizer, a musical! synthesizer, not speech, because you cannot... well, you know. Re: do you guys play any instromints
Re: do you guys play any instromints 20: yep it is. Basically once I tackled flute and figured out I could get that, and got into music from around the world via khoomei (Tuvan throat singing), I kept hearing all of these awesome sounds. And I'm going "I want to make that sound, let me see if I can get one of those and try it"! Plus there were some instruments connected with traditions I just wanted to explore. the kantele, for example, is a Finnish zither, basically a sort of wooden box with strings across it. Originally they had a limited number of strings, usually five, and were possibly used to sing poetry to, e.g. the runos that make up The Kalevala.Later they added more strings, I have a ten string, but they'd still play this really meditative music along with dance tunes and stuff. i got pretty interested in The Kalevala, because in college I majored in religious studies and essentially minored in folklore. Took a class on The Kalevala and all. So I just really wanted to see what that was all about. I'm a pretty experiential kind of person. So I got one.I also love learning about other cultures and all, as you might guess from the college stuff, so it's really cool to get my hands on stuff and try to learn about it and all. Plus I agree with somebody else's signature on here, more or less, music is the language of the universe. I'm also an animist, basically I think stuff's got spirits, so my version is the universe is alive and it responds to music. Add to that, man I dunno, I just feel like for the most part music makes us more human, breaks down prejudices, all kinds of good stuff like that. So I mean, there's some stuff that's pretty eh, I still haven't really worked out the mijwiz yet, partially because I can't circular breathe for one thing. But you gotta keep trying you know? Lots of drumbel, lots of flutes, Bulgarian and Turkish kaval (dilsiz kaval), Moldavian kaval which is an entirely different instrument, Turkish ney, Bashkir kurai, a chromatic set of bansuri, some Nepali flutes, a couple recorders, tinwhistle, Irish flute, quena, tarka, shakuhachi, some Native American flutes, a couple suling from Indonesia, a tambin from West Africa, various vessel flutes including an ocarina and a xun, probably some stuff I'm forgetting. For drumbel we've got a chromatic set from America, a chromatic set from Hungary, a couple of dan moi from Vietnam, some kubings from the Philippines, a genggong from Bali though I still suck at it because you play it by pulling a string instead of plucking like most instruments and I haven't gotten it down yet, a morsing from South India, a couple of murchunga from Nepal, a Tuvan khomus, a Sakha khomus, a Hmong ncaas, some Yi hoho, and probably a few more I'm forgetting.Sticking with wind instruments, a pianica (A.K.A. melodica), a khaen/khene, a bawu, a hulusi, kitchen bagpipes, Swedish bagpipes, a few standard ten hole mouth organs, a few tremolo mouth organs, an Albert system clarinet, a Maui xaphoon, a mijwiz, and I'm pretty sure I have a didjeridu lying around somewhere. I've also got a three-row button accordion and an Indian harmonium, which are technically wind instruments but not mouth-blown. For percussion I've got various forms of rattles and shakers, the latest thing I'm attempting is the kashaka, an ashiko, an udu, a cajon, a Fanta bottle, some claves, and instrument I can't think of the name of at the moment, it's from Mali. It's an iron sheet rolled into a tube and the edges have ridges, and you scrape something along the ridges for rhythm. I'm probably forgetting things because I know I've got some random things laying around that I'm not thinking of.For strings, we've got the kamele ngoni, which is the instrument you play the Malian instrument mentioned above with, a soprano, tenor, banjo, and baritone ukulele, a guitalele, A piccolo guitar which is basically a guitalele with steel strings, a tenor guitar, a banjo, a mandolin, a doshpuluur, a phin, a Seagull merlin/M4, a mountain dulcimer, an autoharp, a kantele, a reconstructed Anglo-Saxon lyre, a fiddle, a Nepali sarangi, a Karen t'nah/thana, a k'ni/koni, a topshuur, and probably a couple of other things I'm forgetting. Can I play every single one of these? Not necessarily. I can get notes on fiddle but I still haven't figured out a way to fret it without killing my left hand. I generally suck at bowed things. Obviously I can use practice on every single one of them. My best would be Jew's harp. I can play decent tunes on most wind instruments but still need work, e.g. on various traditional styles of ornamentation and such. There are also some instruments where I haven't really been able to delve into the tradition, I can get sound out of the Turkish ney but I've had no instruction in the makamat and all of that. Similarly I can do some stuff on strings but I need a lot of work yet. Oh yeah, I also have a Komplete Kontrol keyboard, so I'm learning that, organ-style playing specifically, because I loves me some drone.Basically I got stuck with trumpet in band, not my choice, gave it up, decided I wanted a Jew's harp in high school, had nobody to teach me. Eventually I discovered Tuvan music, where it's used as a serious instrument, then got into world music. I was going to buy a bamboo flute but I said I wouldn't because I couldn't get a sound out of it. My then girlfriend, now she's my wife, told me to go ahead and get it because I'd practice and get it. So she's only got herself to blame for the basement full of instruments. If anybody needs to know how to play Jew's harp, hit me up. I guess you could for other stuff too, as long as you realize I'm self-taught and might only be able to give you some basics. I know a ton about Jew's harp though. Re: do you guys play any instromints Well, let's see. My voice is my main instrument, and yes, contrary to popular beleaf, the voice is clasified as an instrument. I can also play the recorder and a type of drum we called a Jembe. I want to learn to play the guitar and the trumpet. Re: do you guys play any instromints Piano and keys in general, guitar, base, accordion, harmonica, drums, violin, cello, shall I keep going? The idea here is that the only instruments I cannot play are those I've not had the honor of handling for any longer than a couple of minutes. Oh, and the flute. I grew impatient with the flute.
