Re: music tech and gear discussion and reviews.

A piece of gear I recently got is a Behringer qx1622USB mixer. Im still trying to figure out how exactly it works, hard to find owners of the same board to ask for a button layout or so.Interesting thing is that people often asociate Behringer with crappy quality and loads of noise, while I am actually not noticing that at all on this mixer. If it starts later on I will return it, but Im cautiously optimistic for now. Anyone have experience with these?

Im surprised I havent commented on this topic before, this is gonna be a long post. Now, Im a sort of musician but not really. I need to find time to practice.First things first, I did have a lot of fun doing drum lessons when I was younger and as a result I have myself a Yamaha Stage Custom acoustic drumkit. It has a bass, snare, high tom, mid tom, floorr tom, ryde symbol, crash and high hat.I got some addons as well eventually. A stick bag that clips around the floor tom, and a cow bell as well. When playing at home I use something called cool rods which are quieter than traditional sticks. However, whenever I had to use sticks, well, my drum teacher found me some rather awesome ones. Its been a while since Ive touched them and I have unfortunately forgotten the name, but when you hold them, even though your hands start to sweat, you do not lose your grip, and they feel very light and easy to play with.I also own a Novation Impulse 49 midi keyboard, whicfh pulgs into a USB on the computer and instead of sending sounds to the keyboard, the device just sends out midi signals. I just havent braught myelf to really having a go with it yet, yet I really would like to at some point, but thats the problem. When that point will be, I honestly do not know. Im stuck with soundfonts rather than vsts as my other computer uses windows 8 and qws, and midi yoke no longer works on win8.One other thing I like to do is sing. When creating sound projects I use Goldwave v5, havent treid v6 yet. The interesting thing is last time I made a cover, I recorded my vocals using my samsung galaxy s4s stereo microphone and then synced them to the music from an instrumental track, and the result has been pasted in a link below, although I think it clips a bit as I treid to make the vocals mono:https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/177 … 0cover.mp3

Re: music tech and gear discussion and reviews.

O [[wow]]. I really like this topic. Discussing about guitars, fx, amp, in short your gear. My main instrument is guitar. And im currrently using an ybanez Gu. I dont know what is the exam model because this is just a secondhand. I have also one floyd roze guitar but I dont use it too much because when i dive bomb it goes out of tune. Wish I could buy an original one this is the only thing that is not secondhand. Multi effects processor. I currently use zoom G7.1 UT. But i havent figured out the settings because I missplace my printed manual. Note, this is also a secondhand. Amps. Im using marshall MG15fx amp and this is not secondhand, i bought it through my savings. Has any of you tried using zoom multyple effects processor here? thanks. I have a suggestion asult freak improving your speed. You need to learn a song but it is not necessary metal or some songs that has a fast guitar licks. You can check out Paul Gilberts solo and i r
ecommend you to listen this songs, I cannot tell a lie or I still have that other girl. It is cool. You can also listen to Guthrie Govans emotive balad. And in my case, im improving my speed in a way of playing whats inside my head. I just create guitar licks. My favorite technique is string skipping but i still have to practice because im having difficulty playing it. I am not a fun of exercises. I just play whats inside my head, learn some stuffs, or listen to a guitar demonstrations. I hope this will help for those who wants to build there picking speed and, Thanks and best regards: Chris.

the problem is that picking speed cant be improved just by playing random licks and solos... because you cant learn to play those unless you know the exact fingerings. I personally enjoy exercises, but thanks for letting me know about the songs... I will check them out for sure!

Re: music tech and gear discussion and reviews.

If you want to play the synths or keyboards with your guitar and chords arent important to you, you can buy Sonuus g2m (guitar to midi). Although you can play only one note at a time, you still can get leads or cool basslines with it. I got it for about 95 eur, which in dollars should be a bit more. A couple of videos about it:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7fGHFtlt97whttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mEb4sNVNCjQIm going to As it detects one note at a time, youve gotta have really clean playing technique and different picks can yeald different results. Im planning to order myself the Korg Volca bass in a month. which by the way can make quite nice lead sounds as well. A couple of videos about it as well.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1B58f9GQRcEhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QeSTXjAQU0c

Sounds cool... thanks for both those recommendations! Chords are actually important to me, which is why I dont use onscreen keyboards or simply digital midi sequencers from my computer to write songs. hahaha. but Ill definitely check out both of these. Thanks for the links... let me know how things with the corg go, and maybe you might consider doing a demo of one of these things assuming you get the second piece as well. Also, if anyone knows of any more dedicated sites or places to discuss music tech as blind musicians, feel free to share resources.

Guitar synthesis isnt something I know all that much about, but this roland product Ive had my eye on did it... I want this, and watch this video to find out why. This guy makes an attempt to recreate some pop songs using a drum beat, an electric guitar and this synthesizer. the sounds arent exact matches, but theyre as close as any good quality karaoke or cover track. Finally those keyboardists cant brag at us about how many more sounds they get! lol I want this so much... dang the $800 price tag!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tmsio4QHJuI

I have 3 toms, a Zilgian ride cymbal, the original hi-hat, the snare, of course, and a 16 inch Kasza crash cymbal. I have moon gels on all of my toms but they still ring alot for some reason. Im going to try and find a new set as well, maybe a Ludwig and make my cymbal setup Paiste.

I listened to that review and the fuzz sound was quite beafy and had a really nice bottom end.One thing though, as I know, but of course I can be wrong, is that Brittish sound is usually associated with the more mid ranged, cutting sound, think of Marshalls and the American e.g. Fenders have more bottom end.Really liked the description, gave a good overview how this beast looks like.

Right now Im using Gold Wave 5.7.0, as well as the new Gold Wave Beta 6.0.5, but I dont really need what the new one has to offer much, and the scripts arent updated for it as of yet.I also use Audacity 2.0.6.0 with the 100 plug in VST pack, but allot of those are for music, still, I need to get into Audacity more, as its just recently received some great scripts and doesnt crash my sound card any more, since Im on 7, because right now I only really use it for putting effects on files I edit with Gold Wave before hand.I have the fmpeg and Lame libs, as well as the excellent Jaws scripts available for both programs. For headphones I just received the sexy low end professional studio monitors from Audio-technica, ATH-M50x, as a Christmas gift.Very unfortunately, they shipped with highly imbalanced drivers, so I have to get them replaced but, at least Amazon will do it pretty easily.I heard them a bit before I pu

nd Im surprised at how much the person who got them for me spent in the first place.Im using the Mac Book Pro Retnas sound card, Cirrus 4208-CRZ, which is hard to find info on but Ive heard its very similar to the CS4207, which is pretty easy to get info on. So I wont talk about the specs here, partly because I dont understand allot of them and partly because its got way more than the headphones.People who are in the know, do seem to think its pretty good though.Ive got a Western Digital My Passport Ultra 1TB USB 3.0 external portable HDD, with aprox 250GB of unlicensed sounds, not for comercial production.Ive got plenty of big stuff from Sound Ideas, Hollywood Edge, Soni, and BBC, as well as some smaller names like Akai and Alegro, and one time only colaberative libraries like Sound Ideas and Disney, and Sound Ideas and Lucas Arts, as well as some promotional sets like Soun

Re: music tech and gear discussion and reviews.

All right, I try to list my music gear.Instruments:My electric is Schecter hellraiser avenger. At first it had EMG pickups, but as I couldnt get so nice clean tones out of them, I got them changed to some Gibsons (I dont remember the exact name of them). Theres also coil tap installed, so I can get some nice single coil tones.Acoustic: Washburn wd15. Has quite a large dreadnaught sound and as I tune my guitars whole step lower, it suits me really well.lap steel: Peavey powerslide. Also quite a good change and in addition to playing it the standard way, you can also, thanks to the strap system, play it by standing.electric bass: Yamaha rbx180- Im not sure about the number though.Acoustic bass: Ibanez AEB10E I also have a Tenson strat copy, which is actually quite crappy instrument, but as it is my first electric, it stil holds a sentimental value for me.Mandolin: Vintage vfm500er.Small synth and dru
m machine: Korg monotribe2 didgeridoos and 8 jews harps.Amps:My tube amp is Laney lc15 - has quite a distinctive tone, but Im starting to grow tired of it.Micro amps: Roland Microcube, Marshall ms2 and Blackstar Fly 3. Got the latter one a couple of weeks ago and I really love it! You can check it out from the following video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oA02o_BThTcBass amp Hartke Kickback 15. I have recently quite rarely used it.Processors:My main processor is Digitech rp360xp. Is really cheap and has quite good tones inside. I usually run it straight to the mixer or soundcard. The knobs make a nice click when they are turned, so I know quite easily, where I am in the effects chain, so it is quite accessible. unfortunately the software is not. Before buying it I got myself Boss gt100. When reading the manual I got the impression that it is quite usable for the
blind. But when I received the unit, it turned out that none of the knobs clicked when turned. So I had no idea in which part of the effects chain (distortions, comps, amp simulations, modulations etc) I was at. And as the order of effects was quite different in different patches and you have to turn the knob just a tiny amount, it was a real pain to use. SO I returned it.I also have Vox Tonelab EX, but I dont use it any more, due to the fact that it is quite limited. But it gave me quite a good introduction to effect processors.stompboxes and pedals: The main two pedals I use besides the processor is Digitech Whammy and Jamman solo xt looper.Besides them I also have Rocktron Rampage distortion, Big muff, and a chorus/flanger, delay and wah from Ibanez.

Re: music tech and gear discussion and reviews.

Sounds like quite a lot of gear... and I love it! How do you like playing the lap steel... Ive never played one, though itd be interesting to try. Defender, we can talk headphones... but since this is primarily about hardware, editors might not be so relevant unless youre talking about editors for a processor or amp. lol But feel free. Im not going to moderate this topic or have anyone else do it... we can discuss anything we like in here.

Re: music tech and gear discussion and reviews.

@assault_freakHave you played the slide guitar? If yes, it isnt much different, the difference is that you put the lap steel in your lap, so the strings are facing the ceiling. I cannot find a better way to explain this. Reminds me that quite a lot of blind players tend to play the regular guitar at first like this, myself included. Dont really know why.Lap steel players usually tend to use a different kind of slide, so instead of putting the slide on your finger, they use the kind of bar you can hold between your fingers, so you get more controll over it. It also enables you to make behind the bar bends, meaning that you grab a string behind the bar with your pinky and ring finger and bend it. Makes a cool pedal steel type of sound.

When playing some rock and metal stuff through it with the usual electric guitar, it sounds quite crappy. But this really small, m

Re: music tech and gear discussion and reviews.

Hmm. cool1 I love country, so learning the slide technique would be fun... but it sounds difficult. lol Im trying to improve finger speed for my fretting hand and picking speed so I can play faster electric lead... just need to find a good way to practice with. If you have recommendations for exercises, let me know. Heres my gear list... and Ill start reviewing soon.Electric: I have an ESP LTD h401fm, which is a rare guitar... and I cant find it anywhere these days. I got it for a steal deal... the regular retail price was smewhere like 1299, and I lucked onut on boxing week and got it for 400 instead. Its got two EMG humbuckers in it, and I can use them either coil tapped or full with a five way selector, so I can get that nice creamy gibson tone as well as a more stratty bite sound if I want something a little sharper. I typically play contemporary christian worship which is like a form of alternative rock, as well as some 80s rock and some h
arder stuff when I want to have a bit more fun, and on occasion some country or blues , so this works very well... I love this guitar.Acoustic: I have a fender sonoran wildwood acoustic / electric hybrid, and it works great. the body is nice and resonant, though not as basy as I would personally like. Antoher deal... I got this guitar for about $180, after a trade in of an old guitar and the sale price of 350 compared to the regular 450. this guitar is great for rock and country, pop also, and the pickup has an onboard eq which is great, and it connects well. the wood is great with a solid top which adds for more lows and mids, which I like.Processors and AmpsI have a line 6 Pod HD 300 as my processor. Theres actually a lot that can be done by just using the effects knobs on the top of the board. they dont click but each effects knob will give you up to three different effect categories, and adjusts the intensity of those categories while the presets
knob actually changes the effect. This processor also functions as a virtual peddle board, so you can have it turn on and off certain effects in the chain like a real board. Lots of connectors and can be plugged into anything either through a standard 1/4 inch jack or an xlr output if you want to use it as a DI for a mixer or go into a PA system.Amp: I recently got a Trayner ygl1, an amp made in Canada. Its an all tube combo and pumps out a good 15 wats... I actually just got it yesterday, so I havent had time to play with it yet. but hopefully will be posting recordings soon of all the gear just to add more to the discussion! My last piece of gear is a relatively new find called the Beat Buddy. Its a drum machine thats been built into a guitar peddle... you cant hammer out your own beats on the device itself, but as the beats are all midi files you can create your own easily enough. The manager software is not accessible as of yet, but be
cause this is an indie project the developers have been pretty responsive to me and are looking into it. this comes with 200 or so songs in 10 different styles, and the drum set and song selection knobs all click, so its easy to count where you are. all the drum samples sound great, as theyre all real live recorded samples and not digitally editted ones... and theyre also non quantized, so weird cutting and looping that sometimes happens on machines doesnt happen as often with this device. Will be putting up recordings of that too!

Re: music tech and gear discussion and reviews.

Hmm, it is quite hard for me to point out some perticular good exercises or videos, because Ive accumulated the stuff over the years from many different places. But Ive been enjoying videos from Rob Chapmans channel, the same channel where the blackstar fly 3 review was, so you can find it there. seams to be a cool chap and they have quite a lot of fun reviewing the stuff. There are also some lessons, but mainly the gear reviews. They reviewed the beat buddy too.[[wow]], you were quite lucky indeed by getting those instruments so cheap!Im also trying to practice my speed, mainly alternate picking. Sweeping is something Im really struggling, but I decided to get good first at alternate and then some day trying to sweep.Maybe someday I will make some reviews myself, but who knows when will it be. But you can listen to a couple of pieces of mine from soundcloud.https://soundcloud.com/gerth-jaanim-e/Põhjala avarused translates as The vast lands of the north is recorded with my jews harp.Kapates hobusel - Trotting on a horsse is recorded with the guitar straight to the Digitech rp360xp, then to the looper and straight to the soundcard.Hommikuvaikuses - In the silence of the morning The same setup, except the Tonelab EX was used instead of rp360xp.Rock on!

I dont play metal, so sweeping isnt really something I need to learn, at least not yet. lol I can do alternate picking.. my main problem is finger speed on my left hand which frets. Im going to keep looking and see what I can find... and Ill start reviewing maybe in the next few days. Ill check out those pieces you sent!
