Re: new stuf at CSUN2016
But what about when the device becomes a standard Android tablet, using standard apps from the Google Play store? I thought that the Keysoft layer only extends to the Keysoft part of the device.

No. See, they've put keysoft into the their android kernel, completely rewritten from the ground up.

Re: new stuf at CSUN2016
So if it uses some flavour of Talkback in some form, we would not be able to operate the unit completely with the braille display as I have heard from people who use Android that some things still require speech. And I would assume that we have to contend
Re: new stuf at CSUN2016
Weird. On Greg's unit, it was using the talkback sounds.

Actually, There's no sounds for anything, from what I saw with the one I played with. Actually, the way the BrailleNote Touch is set up, it doesn't use tallk back. It uses it's own little screen reader that HumanWare madwe. Talk Back can be inabled, but for playing
Re: new stuf at CSUN2016

Re: new stuf at CSUN2016
At present, since google has worked closely with humanware on the braillenote touch, which is certified by google, the braillenote touch uses the modern talkback sounds. Which does mean, that in one way or another, midi support is back on the braillenote
Re: new stuf at CSUN2016
Eloquence? I thought it came with Acapela by default, because that's what Greg's unit was using. Unless he purchased acapela voices on his unit.

I actually saw the BrailleNote touch today, as Humanware went to the Texas School for the blind and visyually impaired. It is awesome. It has a 2.4 ghz duel core processer, 2 gb of SDRAM, and a 16 gb flash based drive. It runs android version 4.22. It also has

Re: new stuf at CSUN2016
The Elbraille was not the only braille product announced at CSUN. A French company called Insight Vision have just started shipping their Windows 10 tablet with a 32-cell braille display and a touchscreen. To type, you put your fingers in small holes
Re: new stuf at CSUN2016
Ahoy allOut of all the thing announced the ones I'm looking forward the most to are the BrailleDisplays that don't cost a arm,leg and a torso and then some. Maybe they won't have all the bells and whistles and a super duper refresh rate as those braille displays
Re: new stuf at CSUN2016
With the new Orbit display, it would be very frustrating having to finish the line, wait for three seconds, continue, wait, continue, wait ... It would just break the flow of the reading.I agree that HIMS is very clever and they really do maximise the technology
Re: new stuf at CSUN2016
School districts would like JAWS Student Edition because it means that teachers who are trained in the use of JAWS would not have to learn another screen reader. Also, it has been proven that it is easier to teach both blind, low-vision and sighted people JAWS than
Re: new stuf at CSUN2016
I've also heard about a new mozilla add on called f123, www.f123access.com I think it was at csun this year as well, it's a firefox add on that makes facebook, youtube, web what's app and other web pages completely accessible. it even has a built in auto label

All right, if I ever buy one of these new note takers, it's the NeoBraille! This thing is a powerhouse that blows everything else out of the water. It's got a 2.1 GHZ Octacore processor, 3 gigs of ram, a 64 gig flash disk, a micro SD slot, USB 2 and 3 ports, an LTE

I really do hope, that Humanware will follow in the Braille Press's footsteps and make at least some of their app sweet available on google play, if Even for a reasonable price, as a companion to the notetaker.

Re: new stuf at CSUN2016
i just saw something new, jaws is selling their student editions of jaws now at i think $300 for an anual subscription or 12 months use of jaws. after that it is another $300 i think. so my question is lets say i am a school district or i own a school district
Re: new stuf at CSUN2016
Hi.Based on the track record of the company developing it, I'd say the ElBraille will most definitely flop.Their last creation, ElSmart (an android smartphone with a simbian style keyboard of all things) failed epically, with many users reportting problems
Re: new stuf at CSUN2016
Looks like an all round decent product, I just don't want to preorder it before getting impressions from other people. Thinking about the vario ultra braille 40 as well, or another USB / bluetooth display with a keyboard and a basic processor.

Re: new stuf at CSUN2016
From the sounds of it the Canutes software and firmware are open source, so you can mess with them if you want. Some of the hardware isn't though, but it sounds like they want to change that at some point. Powered by a raspberry pi on Raspbian I think? Using off
Re: new stuf at CSUN2016
Am curious though... are there any other advantages that might make any of these things worth the buy? If I can get funding for any of these, I may thinnk on it.. but as of right now, the kamute braille display is the only thing that really sparks any interest
Re: new stuf at CSUN2016
The Kanute display is the only thing on this list that I find interesting at the moment... with an iphone and two computers, I don't really need a note taker as of right now. The only advantage to any of them is the braille keyboard, but for the price I'd be paying
Re: new stuf at CSUN2016
For more info on the braillenot touch, Just go over here. This has been interesting endeed. I wonder how many of the notetakers will flop though. Something tells me that replacing a keyboard with a touch one might not work out quite right, but what do I know

Re: new stuf at CSUN2016
Hm, pretty cool. The Canute seems to use a mechanical tumbler approach based on something called the Natesan Block, pretty similar to an idea i've been floating lately. Wonder if using only a single row instead of 8 would have affected the price much.

Oh, I promise you, they won't. They've been whippin out updates rapidfire for it, and they plan to keep doing that. Their apps like the nbp editer and calculator will also be on the play store, so they aren't tied to firmware updates. Nbp Editer is already
Re: new stuf at CSUN2016

Re: new stuf at CSUN2016
However, the braille2go definitely wins cheepest notetaker around, for around $2500 for a 20 cell braille notetaker, no bad at all. And it seems to running much more successfully than the braille plus18. The braille plus18, sadly, was an attempted revolution
Re: new stuf at CSUN2016
Humanware says that the cost of the Braille Note Touch will be the same as the Braille Note Apex, so there will not be any for $1500. There will be no Voice Note and no QWERTY version.

A correction is that the Neobraille is actually from Japan.I heard about another notetaker from Russia that runs Windows 10 and uses the JAWS screen reader in combination with a Focus 14 Blue. This is called the ElBraille.I am waiting for HIMS to announce
