Weird. I have a GoldWave license, and never had to pay for it more than once. Is this new?

Re: pole, would you go for perpetual or subscription for software? Why?

Depends on whether I think it's worth the subscription.Apple seems to be encouraging developers to adopt the subscription model, but it really depends on the app.Subscribing to use a keyboard app such as flicktype may give the developer revenue, but there isn't much you can do with a keyboard app apart from maintain it when something breaks.I hear gold wave is in beta on iOS, we're not sure if that will have a subscription model like the windows version or if it's going to be an outright purchase.I think this would depend on what an app has to offer. We're use to subscribing to streaming services, and now we have office 365 and I'm sure other apps are also doing the same.Swamp has a subscription to play online, and I know quite a few mainstream games have the same thing.A few final Fantasy games are online, so you are not only paying for play station plus about once a year, you're also paying for game subscriptions as well.At the end of the day, ask yourself, do I really need this?App developers need to make money somehow, a one time purchase will eventually dry up.What I find strange is when apps have the option of a one time purchase, or a subscription.

Re: pole, would you go for perpetual or subscription for software? Why?

Yeah, with everyone else that perpetual is preferred when possible.I think the key difference is product Vs service. It seems like an unreasonable amount of software is switching to making things services when they can easily be products. I do not know why. It helps maintain the ever-moving target that is up-to-date technology, in which things constantly change but rarely improve, which imo is pointless artificial entropy and difficulty that selects against the ability to make something stable... but what do I know? The key thing screwing this up, even without what I just complained about, is everything going online. It makes way more sense to subscribe when using something on a server or network, and wouldn't you know, nearly everything is moving toward an always online model. >.<

Re: pole, would you go for perpetual or subscription for software? Why?

I am in the same boat here too. I will subscribe if I'm getting new content like zombies run, or if it is something that requires maintenance like office, but generally speaking if I buy something, I want to by it out right.

Re: pole, would you go for perpetual or subscription for software? Why?

Subscriptions can be good for some things. We've always had subscriptions for antivirus software so we can keep their databases updated. We have subscriptions for cloud storage and streaming services too. I'm okay with that model if something requires constant maintenance. When it comes to something like JAWS that doesn't exactly require constant maintenance, I keep my perpetual license. Why? Because at least with a perpetual license, I won't be stuck with 40 minute mode if I can't renew my SMA right away. That and the starting price for that license was a lot of money, and I don't want to just throw that away.that said, the home annual license is a great option for someone who can't afford that starting price for a perpetual license. It also gives you the ability to move authorization keys around. But as I said before, if you can't afford to renew it for some reason, you go back to 40 minute mode.As for Office, I chose the subscription model because the price of a retail version is insane, and I think you have to pay that price every time there's a new major version. That's unless there's some discount for upgrading from a previous one.

I am not sure how to create a pole. I am still annoyed that this forum doesn't support Markdown.

Re: pole, would you go for perpetual or subscription for software? Why?

Agree with you there. I'll always go for perpetual unless subscription has a very good deal, or unless the only thing a company sells their product for is subscription and they don't have a perpetual option. However if there is a perpetual option i'll go for it 99.9percent of the time. Kinda still want to turn this into a poll though, not sure how. Do I have to leave the topic subject and toppic message blank and just fill out the pole fields? It wouldn't let me submit the pole, it said something like, number of days and maximum votes cant... for some reason.

Re: pole, would you go for perpetual or subscription for software? Why?

For me, I try to avoid subscription software unless I am getting an extremely good value for the price. For example, I just bought an Office365 subscription, a few weeks ago and I got a lot for $70 a year. I get access to all the Office apps I might need, and I get 1 TB of OneDrive space. I also pay for a yearly license for JAWS. The $90 a year is cheaper than paying for the SMA every 2 or 3 years.
