Re: proposition: rb hosting

@9Easily.  Child porn: you just stick pictures in the HTML.  Instructions on how to build bombs: you just stick pictures in the HTML.  Instructions on how to make meth: same.  The images don't have to be separate files.  You can just use data: URLS to put it inline, or expand it with JS.But that's before we consider whether they hacked you.  Anyone who wants to do this stuff will just hack you.  Especially if you're still at the stage of not knowing how to only have PHP on some directories.  It won't even be that hard--there are a million circulating databases of "run all these scripts to hack someone, and we'll tell you what to do" sorts of things on the dark web, one  install of tor and a .onion site away.  You don't actually have to be overly knowledgeable to hack someone nowadays, just willing to go to internet places that only criminals go.You can't anonymously run your own server anymore, because at the end of the day you had to buy internet from someone.  SO, if you want anonymity, the gold standard is hack someone else now.  We don't keep the kind of records necessary to track the content anywhere else but the server that got hacked, so you just upload through a VPN or use the fact that you hacked the server to delete the logs of your upload or both, and you've got a nice little anonymous corner of the internet that you can put whatever illegal thing on.The problem isn't whether you get hacked.  If your blog gets hacked and turns into instructions on meth, you're probably okay because it was a blog, and when you show them the Wayback machine or whatever and they see that it's your blog, everyone will just go "yeah, he's not lying".  The problem is that when you become a hosting provider, "I swear I got hacked and didn't know that I was distributing illegal stuff for the last 2 months" really doesn't fly anymore.  It's true in your case, but all the evil drug lords who run hosting providers for their drug lord friends would say the exact same thing as you, and no part of the legal system would be able to tell the difference between you and crazy drug lord.  The bigger providers that actually do this have people whose job it is to look every day and make sure this isn't happening, and are behind LLCs and things to shield themselves from the legal ramifications if it did.being blind works in your favor, but basically: consider what it looks like if you're the teenager put in front of the court because you ran a high school hosting site that started distributing whatever-you-like.  It's not a good look.  It's sad that anyone has to think this way, but we do.  The legal system is ideally innocent until proven guilty etc etc etc, but even if you're proven innocent you're often still effectively punished for having been in the controversy with respect to things like employment.

Re: proposition: rb hosting

hello all,I have decided not to go ahead with the hosting for obvious reasons.I don't know how someone could distribute such things in html, but perhaps they could use a redirect. Also, the hosting wouldn't have been abandoned at 5, I've moved past that trend now. As we can see, I currently have 4 active projects and am updating them frequently enough, plus another project in the making - though y main project for a long time to come now will be rb farm.

Re: proposition: rb hosting

@7Yeah, I forgot that minors are anonymized in some circumstances.  But that's per country (even per state in the U.S., according to a quick Google) and I think it might still show up in background checks.

Re: proposition: rb hosting

@4 To be fair, as a minor his name won't be drawn into this, at least not in any capacity likely to survive a decade or so of Google churn. But yeah, still a terrible idea, especially when established businesses already do it better.

Remember Rory, there's a lot of schmucks in this world who will be willing to screw you over at every turn, just like what 3 and 4 said. When the shit hits the fan, it'll be you to catch. Hold off until you're more skilled, and have better resources to handle the task.

Also, this hosting will be abandoned in a couple months or some amount of time like that, so no thanks, think I@ll stick with a permenant hosting solution anyways.

Re: proposition: rb hosting

@3 is right. But I'm going to be more blunt.  You're fine until someone goes "hey! Let's distribute child porn or insert-other-really-illegal-thing!" And then you're fucked.  I try not to curse on this forum but fucked is the only applicable word for a situation like that. There are other lesser-but-bad things that can happen--for instance someone distributing really big files, and you getting surprise bandwidth charges--but something super super illegal is both likely and really bad.And to be clear on how bad this is, the absolute worst case is prison.  Since you're a minor that probably wouldn't happen if this went wrong, so the worst case for you is that you have to explain to employers for the next 20 years why there's some big news article about drug distribution rings or something with your name on it, or why you have a criminal record. If you do this, don't do it through  a custom app, do it through SFTP and only give access to people you know and trust 100%.  Not doing it through a  custom app makes it less likely that someone random on the internet will hack you.  Only giving it to people you know and trust makes sure you're probably not going to get dragged into seriously bad shit that can destroy your life.

Re: proposition: rb hosting

Don't do it. There are plenty free hosting options out there, built by folks with way more knowledge on how to secure a system than you have. Please don't take that personally--I've done this for nearly 2 decades and I wouldn't run a service like this, precisely because it seems so easy but is actually tough to get right. Also, I haven't even touched legal issues like the DMCA, Safe Harbor, etc. If someone sends you a virus or porn, and you're distributing that unwittingly, you're personally on the hook unless you've spun up a legal entity and worked with a lawyer. If you really have people asking you to host HTML for them, send them to hosts like netlify.com. Their app is quite accessible, and lets you either upload HTML directly or plug in a Git repository and autopublish. There are also command line utilities to instantly publish a folder to your site. Their free tier is generous enough for almost any need you're likely to serve, you're not stuck supporting users, and their terms of service shield them from liability in a way that you almost certainly aren't.Hope that helps. Focus on building games, not on doing 8 million other unrelated things, especially things like this that contain all sorts of minefields.

proposition: rb hosting

Hi there,I have created an application which allows users to upload html files to my servers, free of charge, easily, and mostly safely, here's how it works. if anyone has some better ideas, feel free to let me know.Currently, the program functions under a sub directory /rbportal/the_computer_hostname/the_user's_usernameIf the user doesn't want it, well, sorry that's their only option (for now I can change that)I also have to figure out how to completely disable php in that directory.Would anyone use this and do you have any suggestions for a better directory layout?
