Re: questions before installing NVDA

I'm using a Handy Tech Braille display and I didn't need to download anything at all. It just worked without problems. Also, I switched off those damn "No display connected" messages. It's under options, braille. Not in the settings changer, but in the main Jaws Window.

@22 and 23: Thanks, I'll check them out.@25: The difficult thing with Handy Tech displays is that JAWS comes with a pre-installed driver for Handy Tech braille displays, only it seem s to be an outdated one, so you have to download an additional one fromthe Handy Tech site, install it and that's really annoying.

Re: questions before installing NVDA

Yes. I think what happened then was FS had a program that enabled braille display developers to have signed drivers before FS would allow them drivers into the product. It was $5000 a year for those braille display developers to get the signed drivers to FS so that FS could put the signed drivers into JAWS. The  irony was that the reason this came into the place was that when JAWS was updated, whatever the braille display the person had stopped working with JAWS and the drivers needed constant updating. Fortunately these days we're heading to a human interface standard for those devices. If you really want to hear more about why this was put into place you can go tohttp://podcast.freedomscientific.com/FS … er2009.mp3

Re: questions before installing NVDA

Again, JAWS, for me, insofar that I can remember, has not had any problem with display drivers or installing any extra hardware or assistive devices such as braille displays. It has to be said though, I find JAWS to work faster with braille displays. It doesn't lag or anything. Whereas NVDA if you start working fast with one, it will freeze faster than JAWS.

that is another reason why I don't use Jaws. using most hardware devices like braille displays plane work better with NVDA. No messing with display drivers, no need to mess with a box to add a display to jaws, and the worse thing for me was that it did not even work after adding a display when I tried that with Jaws 2014 with one I used back then.

Re: questions before installing NVDA

NVDA will automatically detect the Handy tech braille series. I have only the Handy tech Connect 40, and the first time I tried it, I didn't really need to do anything. In fact, I love NVDA's automatic detection of braille displays as opposed to JAWS. JAWS has this annoying dialog where, when you disconnect the braille display, it keeps saying "no Braille Display detected". It's hell annoying.

Re: questions before installing NVDA

Well, each screen reader has its advantages and I have come to the conclusion that none of them is better than any of the two. I use NVDA full time, although I have JAWS 2021 installed in my computer. JAWS doesn't take that many resources on your system, at least not as many as it would make the use of your computer sluggish. To briefly answer a few questions: you can have both screen readers installed on your computer, but running them both at the same time won't be a good idea. I personally decide having JAWS speak at the log-on screen and NVDA running as the primary screen reader. You need to learn a few things when switching to, or using NVDA, particularly the screen layout, and the way NVDA works on the web. For instance, the default screen layout of NVDA is to present all the clicable elements within a single line, but that can be switched off within the browse mode settings. Some things are also different on the web, noteably, the rap into top function found in JAWS is not on NVDA and you will need to jump to the top of the page to interact with the elements in the beginning of a page.NVDA is that small because what you are getting is the very basic installer that will of course be extracted and the full size will go up to 100 MB. However, the true functionality of NVDA lies within add-ons. They will increase the size of NVDA. NVDA also doesn't install any driver that is specific and native to the screen reader, nor does it install any additional components that aide the funcionality of it.

Re: questions before installing NVDA

NVDA comes out of the box pretty boring... That's why there's AddOns though. No, in my experience there's not a huge learning curv for NVDA, but there's a few places it's different than JAWS.NVDA, you'll notice, reads the screen a bit differently than JAWS does... I haven't found out yet whether it's for the worst or for the better, but it really depends on what you prefer. You'll also notice that a few more things are accessible using NVDA than JAWS because of this different way of screen reading. You can usehttps://addons.nvda-project.org/index.en.htmlfor help finding AddOns you would like to use.To answer your first question... No, I have JAWS and NVDA installed on the same computer. If they're both running at the same time it can cause problems but as long as there's only one running at the same time you should be OK.I'd disable JAWS just after clicking enter on the exe file, and just after it gives you the user account control dialogue. Press alt y as usual on that dialogue and whenever it throws you onto the installer app screen you can disable jaws there.Hope this helps,Matthew

questions before installing NVDA

Hi,I am thinking about installing NVDA, but I have some questions before I do:1. Are there any conflicts if JAWS and NVDA are installed (NOT running) on the same computer?2. Do I need to disable JAWS before installing NVDA?3. Are there a lot of things to relearn when installing NVDA?4. And last but not least: How is NVDA that small? I mean, the .exe-file I downloaded from their website was only 24,5 MB or so. Why is it so much smaller than JAWS or does it get bigger when installed?
