Re: recording assistance

Hi Dark,Definitely go through the articles UltraLeetJ linked to. I'll try to explain some of the things that are confusing you at the moment.- Setting up your microphone - in Reaper's preferences under the audio device, you'll want the audio system option set to wasapi and the mode to set to shared. These are the most modern options that will give you the least latency with what you're working with. Then set your input and output devices to your USB mic and headphones respectively. And while we're here, if you change the mode from shared to loopback, this will record every sound on your system even if you don't have a stereo mix feature if you want to record gameplays or other things, just remember to set it back when you're done. Now, to actually record. Let's start by importing your backing track. First, press CTRL+Home to make sure you're at the beginning of the project, Osara will probably say bar 1 when you do this. Now, press CTRL+T to make a new track and give it a name like accompaniment. Then go into the insert menu and choose media file, or press the insert key twice quickly. This will let you load your backing track in. When the file is loaded, your cursor is automatically set at the end, so to hear it you'll need to press CTRL+Home to go back to the beginning and then when you press space it should start playing. Pressing space again *stops* the playback, meaning that your cursor will be back at the beginning, while CTRL+Space is a play and pause.- Now, to record, make a second track, exactly the same way as the first. Pressing up and down will move you between tracks in your project, so make sure you're on the second. Then, press F7 to arm it, and F8 to turn on the monitoring. Arming a track tells Reaper that you want to record on it, you can think of it kind of like releasing the safety on a gun, so you don't accidentally record over something you don't want to. Finally, once again make sure you're at the beginning of the project, or the place where you want to start, and press R to begin recording. You should hear record and the accompaniment will start playing. When you're finished, press R again or space to stop and confirm that you want to keep your recording. Finally, just like after inserting, your cursor will be at the very end, so to hear your recording you'll once again want to CTRL+Home to the beginning and space to play. And that's the basics. For the details, like how to edit your performances, read through the article above. Reaper is one of these programs that's extremely powerful but also incredibly overwelming at first. But it has a really large and active user base, so feel free to ask if you need any additional help.

Re: recording assistance

you might want to read this one and then the follow upsince you are using a backing track you can skip all of the metronome stuff, but you could still use the pre-roll if you want to record section by section or make more passes or takes (the second article goes into more detail on everything)if anything, i wrote them so just ask.

Re: recording assistance

Okay, using mahedee's above instructions I have downloaded reaper, installed all the shenanigans and have got it to the point that hitting f7 or f8 gets me to hear myself through a microphone and I can input media tracks. However, I have no idea firstly how to actually record and listen back to what I recorded, or secondly what all this "arming" thing is. I can create a track and I get that up and down arrow select, and space is play, which also acts as record. Fair enough. However, after I have done some recording through my mike, I want to hear it to see how it sounds, and there seems to be no key for that at all. I did manage to import a backing track on another track (albeit it started in the middle), but again, I have no idea how to hear what I'm doing, so no idea whether it's any good, or whether it needs any editing with reverb or whatever, indeed whilst the getting started page is a good reference, there are so many ekyboard shortcuts doing so many different things it's not funny, particularly since the page is organised by alphabetical list, not by practical good. I even had a hard job selecting my microphone, since I am not sure what all of the devices and such in the input dialogue mean, indeed first time around I couldnt' find the audio devices option at all. Is there anywhere a simple "this is how to record a track with reaper and play it back" type of resource anywhere? Any help much appreciated since this thing is stupidly complicated!

Re: recording assistance

ossara is a thing that makes reaper accesible with nvdahttps://github.com/jcsteh/osaraby the way there is an easyer way than reaper if you wanna look a bit funny with goldwavegoldwave supports playing a sound or music while recording something at the same timebut you need a vertual audio cable or ha program that supports loopback recording, such as audocity or goldwavei'll talk about goldwve though1, download goldwave2, go to the windows search box and type goldwave setup3, click that and find the option wich says allow playback while recording4, click ok, the goldwave window will open5, press f11 and find the devices tab6, in the recording device box, there should be an option called loopback your speaker name, select that and press ok7, go to sound settings, in the control pannel8, find the record tab and find your mic9, click props, find listen tab and check the listen this device checkbox and click ok, now you should hear your mic over  your headphonesnote, while using this dont try to use your speakers because it generates some offel feedback10, open your music from goldwave with ctrl o11, open a new sound window by typing ctrl n, choose mono or stereo or something else12, press ctrl f9, it should start recording, press ctrl tab and you should be at the music  window that you openned beforepress space and it will start to playwhat this does is, records that music and your music at the same timebasic keys include ctrl f9 start recording ctrl f8 ends recordingspace, pauses resumes the soundhome end gos the start and endand this should be enough to get you started

osara is a plugin that instals on reaper, and adds a lot of accessibility to it. here is a link to it's project snapshot. it's like an addon for reaper itselfhttps://osara.reaperaccessibility.com/snapshots/

Hi mahedee, thanks for the clear instructions there. I know reaper is a recording program, but what exactly is Osara? Is it an NVDA addon or something else?

Re: recording assistance

hello. with reaper, the multi-track recording is not vary hard. I explain the process now.1. download reaper and osara. and install them. note that reaper is to be installed first.2. open reaper. it would ask you to set you're audio device. press yes and set it up. wasapi for an audio system works with minimal delay for me. set the input and output as well.3. when done, check if the osara is installed correctly by pressing up or down arrows. it should say, (no tracks).4. add, and if you want, name a track by pressing  control t.5. if you want to add you're music to that track, go to insert menu and choose the option (media file)6. make an other track, and arm it by pressing f7. note that if you want to sing live on a music, you should listen to the music by you're headphones or else you will have feedback to the track that you're recording.with f8 you will be able to monitor the track, in other words, listen to you're self. but with a little delaynow follows a list of hodkeys necessary for editing you're recording a little. you can read a lot more information on reaper accessibility wicky, but these I believe is the most essential for recording a song quickly.space is for play and stop, and control space is for play and paws. this is something experience is quicker to show you how it is different.control left and right arrows on a track would select between it's items. all you record and import would be an item.comma and dot keys moves that item back and forward.A, splits the selected item where the edit cursor is. when ever you paws the edit and play cursor is in the same position.left and right arrows scrubs. press it after adding an item, you would know exactly what it does .w goes to the start of project.page up and down, and control page up and down is for seeking. without control it goes by one bar, and with control it would seek by one beet.vary quick explanation about bars and beats, beats are smallerf is for adding plugins to a track, rea tune is a good plugin for tuning, and rea verbate for adding reverb.also f is used for going to the fx windowp accesses the parameters of a plugin.umm, on second thoughts, start you're recording with something easyer, play the music with media player or something, and sing along. then mix them. and be done with it.

Re: recording assistance

@kianoosh, I don't know anything about Reaper. Last I checked audacity was fine about basic recording, but you couldn't play one track and record another, the way you'd need to when singing from a backing track. I could of course just play the backing track in winamp/vlc whatever, however then there is the problem of sinking the timing on the voice file to the backing track correctly.

Re: recording assistance

reaper and audacity both do what you want. Adobe audition 1.5 and 3.0 also work but you find less accessibility in adobe audition so as far as my knowledge goes your best bets would be reaper and audacity

recording assistance

Okay I have tried to check this on the forum, but there is a bewildering amount of topics with different questions and levels of complexity, so I thought I would ask out right. My lady and I would like to start making recordings of our singing, perhaps doing some Corona virus type songs. This would mean having first, a recording of a backing track (which is usually an mp3), and secondly obviously recording voice. I have an external mike which I have got working with windows speech recognition, although I've not yet got skype to work correctly due to the program seeming less than accessible. So, what is the best thing to do next. There is obviously auddacity, reaper, goldwave and god knows what else. What I am looking for is something which will pickup what is being sung into the mike, and make a combined audio track with the backing, which probably also means recording voice whilst the backing is playing, not unlike making gameplay recordings (which I might well also do if I can sort this process out). So, any suggestions? obviously I'm new to this, indeed I've only just got my usb mike running correctly, but this is obviously something people have done, so presumably there are ways around it.
