Re: something for the audio pros: file looping issues?

Raygrote is unfortunately right, I've heard this before, too. If Goldwave and other programs can see the gapless headers, then they can't probably (re)create them on save, which was probably the source of your issue. :-)Lukas

so I've never heard like 80 percent of the stuff you just said, lol but it does make sensealthough as a side note though you may like to no it's not just apple devices, if I remember correctly the headers can be seen by other programs as well, tested with goldwave and winamp but I also just woke up, so something may have shifted in the memory here... so for you too, now if you want to make gapless looping tones for your phone you can do thatthanks again bud, thumbs up

Re: something for the audio pros: file looping issues?

I am actually not surprised that ITunes worked better for you, for two reasons. First, if I remember correctly the IOS7 and up ringtones are in m4a format and seem to loop reasonably well, though don't hold me to that as I could be wrong. But I've also seen this kind of thing before. If you want to get technical, no compression format is gapless in its raw form, as the compression process chunks the data into blocks of specific lengths. All the blocks need to be filled. You cannot have a partial block, if you do it needs to be padded which introduces gaps at either end of the file. The processing itself also adds a bit of silence at one or both ends of the file, as the algorithms need a fairly large amount of look-ahead, and a small buffer of preceeding data. All those buffers need to clear, which also takes time. The only format which doesn't chunk into blocks and require any fancy analysis is wav and those uncompressed formats based on it.The reason som
e formats are called gapless is that the format accounts for its algorithmic delay. In other words it knows how much to remove from both sides to produce output that is the same length as the original. Not sure how exactly it stores this information. ogg is a perfect example of a format that does this though.MP3 is an example of a format that tends to break loops. However I've heard the Lame mp3 encoder can put gapless headers in its mp3 files. This means that mp3 decoders and players that support this header info could loop the file without fail. If a player doesn't support this info it will simply be ignored and there will be a gap. My best guess is that ITunes and other Apple products provide gapless info in their conversions which Apple players can see. Because MP3 and M4A don't seem to support gapless playback natively like ogg does, for example, you unfortunately run into the problems you describe above.I'm glad I could be of assistance.

Re: something for the audio pros: file looping issues?

well if the problem really lies in the M4A format itself I don't think there's much that can be done to fix it, IOS and it's lack of supporting anything other than a single specific format for ringtones being the problem here which probably means I'll be stuck with a tone that has a gapI actually tried audacity as well just before this post, same thing happensas to wav though I can make another attempt at the loop and try converting that through itunes and see how it goes, will post backthanks for all the clarification thoughedit: holy shit it actually works! at least it did in this case... as long as your file you're going to convert in itunes is a wav fileonly question though is how the phone handles looping...thanks a bunch raygrote, thumbs up

Re: something for the audio pros: file looping issues?

Hi DD,I have good and bad news. Good news first. I know exactly what your problem is. The problem is that M4A is not a gapless format. This means that any time you save something in it, a small silence is added to either one or both ends of the file. This causes problems when you intend to make a perfect loop. Can you use any other file formats? If you have other format options, post here and I will try to find a way to get you better results. It's also possible that using another program to convert the wav to M4A may make the loop work better, though I'm not sure if the IOS decoder can handle gapless M4A playback of any kind. I am only speculating, but I think your best bet would be to try converting wav to M4A with Itunes if you can. I am leaving for vacation tomorrow so I won't be able to do much research for a few days, but i will try to see if I can dig up anything. So when I said earlier that I had good and bad news, I think you suspect by
now what the bad news is... I really don't know what you can do. You said it doesn't bother you that much, but it would bother me if I was trying to make perfectly looping tones. I'm still curious as to what can be done to fix it or make it less obvious.

Re: something for the audio pros: file looping issues?

guys, the problem isn't the actual process of splittingwhen I split the files it works finethe problem is after saving, if I reopen the new file in anything, not just goldwave there is a slight amount of added silence at either the beginning or end of the track, about 0.3 seconds to be preciseeven if I remove it and save they're just added right backthat is my problem, not the looping processI can do that just fine by using the time markers with copying and pasting into a new file, I'm not using cue points

There's also the save selection as... option, which should save a copy of your selection without having to copy it into a new file.

lol Then those markers are the q points. You place them by hitting control q. Alright I think I see the issue. You said coppying you need to split the file after marking the file. Hit Alt e for edit then hit o for edit q points than hit s to split files. First tab to browse to tell it where to put the split files. Then tab to methid of naming split files and hit down arrow untill you hear use space file name and number. That will split up your file into tracks and the part you want won't have any scilence. You then just have to change it from a wav file to an M4A file.

Re: something for the audio pros: file looping issues?

It sounds like you are recording the clip instead of cutting it. If you cut the clip out of the song using Goldwav and q points you can have more control over the clip. I think when you are recording you are ending up with some scilence before or after the clip. I'm asuming you are recording this because you have no idea what Q points are. I can explain how to cut a file using q points if you would like.

as I stated before I'm saving the file as M4A so I can just rename it to have itunes recognize it later, whatever these points are I don't know but I'm not getting any messages, all I do is direct copy from the song in question and there should be no silences, which is true in the new tone file until I save it, after which there comes the looping problem again

The only thing I can think of is that you are also saving the q points. This happens when you save it as a wav file or another format that supports them. Do you get a message asking you if you want to store the q points? If so hit no if not I'm not sure what is creating this issue.

I use M4R which means I have to make the tone in goldwav then use another converter to make it M4R. Not sure if M4A works or not. If you want to get rid of scilence in Gold Wav hit alt c for effects, then f for filter then hit i for scilence reduction. Your tone has to be less than or exactly 40 seconds. I hope this helps.

something for the audio pros: file looping issues?

so let me start off by saying I'm using goldwave for this, not sure if that has anything to do with this but yeahI've been trying to create ringtones recently, M4A extension which is necessary for IOS last I checkedthe short version of the problem is, every time I choose something and make sure it loops properly then save it, if I reopen the file after that something's changed and there is a gap there that wasn't there before between the end point and the beginning of the filelike it's not that large of one and not that big of an issue if I can't get rid of it, but it just breaks the looping of the trackis there any way to get rid of it?if a demo of what I'm talking about is needed I could make one pretty easily... unless I can't make goldwave play and record different files at the same time in which case I'm screwedany help would be appreciated, like not that this is a major thing in my life here but
whenever I try to make a thing this happens and it drives my OCD side insane
