Re: ubuntu install with accessibility?

when you install linux, the MBR of the primary hard drive gets over written by the grub bootloader. if you want to boot into windows, you will need to add an entry in your grub.cfg file to point to the partition that your windows installation is installed. The windows primary bootloader can not load linux, so the grub bootloader replaces the MBR of the hard drive. if you indeed deleted the two unlabeled partitions, you basicly deleted linux and youll have to restore the windows bootloader because on most setups the grub boot files are stored on the ubuntu root partition.Just wondering, what is this talking preboot installation environment you speak of?URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=178838#p178838

Re: ubuntu install with accessibility?

Well I havent had much success with installing ubuntu alongside windows. I installed ubuntu alongside windows with the default settings, that went fine. My system ran linux by default. But while I was using it someone told me that linux and windows cant coexist on partitions because of the file system difference. Windows uses ntfs, and ubuntu uses extended volume, and I was told that those cant get along on the same hard drive. As I still need to use windows, I tried booting into windows, didnt work. So in an effort to get windows back I loaded the talking windows preinstallation environment and then launched disk management. In addition to the c: drive and system reserved partition created by windows, I found 2 unnamed partitions. When I hit the delete key on them it said the partitions were not created by windows. Seeing that windows and Linux couldnt coexist, I thought that if I could delete the 2 unnamed partitions not created by windows, I may ge
t windows back. So I did that. After shutting down talking windows preinstallation, I tried starting my system up again. Windows wouldnt boot. I tried it at least 5 times and 15 minutes of waiting gave me no good outcome. And no, I do not have 2 systems so I cant dedicate one to windows and one to linux. Sure, I could get a usb external drive that I can boot off of, but that defeats the purpose as ubuntu is supposed to be free. Is the talk about ubuntu and windows not getting along true, and how am I to avoid that in the future? Im nearly ready to give ubuntu another try, because the o s itself isnt bad at all, but I need to make sure that I can switch easily between the two. Btw, this is for ubuntu14.04.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=177976#p177976

Re: ubuntu install with accessibility?

Jack, everything you need to repartition your drive and install Ubuntu is on the live CD and is accessible for the most part. Obviously, due to time and space I cant get into specifics right now, but in order to answer your question yes it is possible.Hanif, Ubuntu Linux is 100% free. All you have to do is download the free iso image for your system fromhttp://www.ubuntu.comand burn it to a CD or DVD. Once done you can boot the media and do the install. There is also ways to extract the iso to a flash drive etc if you want to do the install that way.Jack, Im not sure what the bare minimum size for a Ubuntu installation needs to be, but you definitely want to give yourself some room for other stuff like books, mp3s, downloaded files, etc else the OS isnt of much use if you have no place to put your personal files. Just as a rule of thumb if I am installing Linux for a new user as a secondary operating s
ystem I give them a 20 GB partition which is good for the OS as well as leaves them a bit of room to work with for pictures, music, personal documents, whatever. As for automatically creating a partition it only does that if you choose the install along side Windows option which creates a swap partition which is slower than all get out. If you are looking for stability and performance I recommend against doing it that way and do a manual partition of your drive. Yes, it requires a more advanced installation, but it is worth it in the end as Ubuntu will run much smoother.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=177365#p177365

Re: ubuntu install with accessibility?

Jack, in order to edit system files like grub.conf you have to run the program as sudo. For example, sudo nano grub.confwhich would open grub.conf in the nano text editor and give you admin rights to modify the file. If you dont do this you cant obtain root/admin rights to grub.conf.The root account is disabled in Ubuntu so that hackers and crackers can not gain admin access to your system remotely. Besides it is safer and smarter to never run your system as root and to perform admin tasks using sudo which means only one application will be run as super user at a time rather than the entire system.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=177410#p177410

Re: ubuntu install with accessibility?

Hanif, yes, it is possible to install Ubuntu Linux along side Windows. there are two ways to do it. One is to use there special installer to install Linux into a swap partition side by side with Windows. Its the easiest way to set up a multi boot but will run slower than a native install. The second is to repartition your drive with Windows 7s drive tools, create an empty partition, and then install Ubuntu Linux into that. It is the recommended way to do the install in my opinion. As far as installing without a CD that is possible. I am not exactly sure on the specifics of how to do it, but you can use a flash drive or some other USB drive to do the install once you extract the iso image to it, and configure your bios to boot from that device. I am sure there are tutorials out there on how to do it.Jack, there is no way to get the Linux boot manager, Grub, to speak. Besides you dont really need to have it speak anyway. If you set it up to beep when the boo
t menu pops up all you have to do is arrow to the selection you want and press enter. If you know the boot order, which is in your grub configuration files, you can simply count to get to the selection you want. You dont need speech to use Grub.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=176729#p176729

Hi,Id just like to revise @twards answer in post 2.You may, in fact, simply press CTRL + S when the live image has booted to start orca. This holds true for the actual install. As for sticking with 12.04, @tward, youre probably right. Ive installed 14.04 on a VM, and I must say I dont like some of the new things. Id say 12.04 is the best option to stick with, for now.As for OpenSuse, youll probably not want to check out KSOS when its done. its based on the 13.1 release of OpenSuse, currently, but Im thinking of changing it to the ubuntu kernal.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=176731#p176731

Re: ubuntu install with accessibility?

Dhruv, when booting the Ubuntu installer wait for the cd to stop spinning, which should stop at the start install or boot to live mode screen, and then you should press super+alt+s to launch Orca and do the installer. Note, the super key is called the Windows key on Windows systems and the super key on Linux systems. Once you have Orca running it is a simple matter of tabbing around the setup screens and doing a talking install.Assuming you did everything correctly after installing Ubuntu it should come up talking. If not just press super+alt+s when Ubuntu boots to bring up Orca and log into the system.A few other notes. The directions above are for Ubuntu 14.04. However, I have found 14.04 is a bit buggy and there are some accessibility regressions in it. Its for that reason I am sticking with version 12.04 until a few things get fixed in 14.04.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewto
