Re: what can i do to improve my grades

I agree with amerikranian and drums61999 here, actually my method of writing sounds rather similar to amacranian's.I never liked working at home when I was at school either, and even used to go to the local library to just sit and work sometimes. I had to somewhat break that habit at university, where I'd often just have to work in my bedroom, though I also used to work in other places too.I can't say about these honours courses etc, since that's an American thing, but one thing I fully agree with drums61999 about, is that it's always better to work to a target rather than a time limit.say to yourself "I will get at x number of words done" or "i will do this many problems" and don't move until they're finished, frequently if you get into things as people have said, things should start working anyway.

Re: what can i do to improve my grades

The hardest part for me when writing was getting started. Once I get past my introduction, I do just fine. Sometimes, I even will write the rest of my paper then write the introduction if it is being particularily stubborn.A couple suggestions if that doesn't work for you are:1: Set yourself a small goal, say 100 words. Write 100 words then you can do something else. Often times, this will help break through that block.2: Have a designated work area. Only do schoolwork in this area, and nothing else. This will get your mind into the habit of switching gears.3: Have a study partner. One thing that I like is to have someone doing the same thing or who knows about the topic, and bounce ideas off of them.Dark's idea about reading biased opinions and using that to formulate your own thoughts on the subject is a good method too.

Re: what can i do to improve my grades

What makes me do my homework? Honestly? I wonder that every day. I don't want to do it. I want to go and play games, code, read, anything but homework. However, if I try and put it off, I won't be able to focus on anything but the assignment. It's strange, really.I don't plan while writing. Okay, maybe that's a lie, but it's pretty close to the truth.I had to write an expository essay for a Staar (state test). The prompt was something stupid, I believe it was "Why is it important to have time for both work and play?" So, I started to write. Some people call it brainstorming, you putting random words and ideas on paper, but I hesitate to call what I am doing a brainstorm because when I'm done, I typically have a decent draft to work with. The exception for that was, of course, last year's staar, but I digress. In most cases, when I pour out ideas, they end up in a workable solution.Improving your grades overall could be really difficult if not impossible (depends on how far you are in high school). One way of doing it is by taking pre or AP (honors) courses. Be warned, though. Some of them double the workload. Some schools may not even offer them. The reason why you'd want to take the higher courses is for that sweet multiplier (standard course is 1.0, pre-AP is 1.1, and AP is 1.15). However, if you don't do good in standard courses, chances are you'll get screwed over by more intense education. Still, an option to consider.I am sorry that I can't give you more advice. Fact is, there is no secret to it. You either do your homework, as annoying, boring, dumb, moronic, and pointless it may be, or you fail, which leads to 0's for your practice grades, which leads to 0 on your tests which way a lot more than practice when calculating your final ranking.

Re: what can i do to improve my grades

i try to focus but its really hard for me to sit still in classes longer than 45 minutes. My classes are are all 90 minutes. I don't go to other websights anymore when i am supposed to do my work. I did that last year. And in regards to homework at home its hard for me to do for two reasons, 1 being motivation to do my work and another being that its hard for me to do my homework without support. If i am left alone to do work i might get a few problems or sentences of writing done but that will be it. I wish i could stop that and actually get all of my work done

Re: what can i do to improve my grades

I agree with Keyisful here. Also, bare in mind even if it is ADHD, there are plenty of quite standard, none medication type of things a person can do. For example, one friend of mine who worked for disability services at my university used to tutor a chap who had ADHD, but who used origami as an aid to concentration. He'd apparently sit in lectures making various things out of Origami, which kept his hands busy enough for him to concentrate on what was being said.I personally don't have ADHD as far as I know, but I am an inveterate pacer, and always marsh up and down whilst I'm thinking deeply about something and thus require a quiet, relatively obstacle free space to work in.Again this is all part of knowing yourself, what works for you and how best to get things done.

Re: what can i do to improve my grades

Perhaps, but I think we need more info before we just jump right to even the possibility of ADHD> It might be that his classwork isn't accessible, it might be that he's unmotivated, that he's distracting himself, that he has an unstable family situation. I also think that people rush to diagnose any case of a little bit of out of focus behavior as ADHD, and then feel like putting the person on medication is like the silver bullet fix to attention problems.

I would start by writing out a outline. Start with 3 ideas and reorder them if you have to. then as you start writing take a break and think of more stuff to put on your outline.

Re: what can i do to improve my grades

Well for a start, remember This topic since coherence in what your saying will count for a lot. Then, if we're actually talking in terms of composition: Firstly, make sure you actually care about what your writing. One thing I always used to do at university when I had to write a paper on a specific topic, is deliberately read some extremely biased opinions on that topic before I had to write anything, that would start me thinking why those biased people were utterly and completely wrong, and in turn start me thinking about the issue in general, indeed for me, reading about something always helped, even if it was just bits from text books, and at school that was comparatively easy since we didn't have too many textbooks to choose from and just had  to read the chapter on whatever we needed to work on at that point. If you can do the reading and get yourself engaged, writing shouldn't be as difficult, though you will still need to make yourself time to do it without distractions, EG I always personally found it far easier to write at school during free periods and breaks than at home, and frequently would work through lunchtime, indeed I have always found myself that mornings are the period I write best; much of my Phd was written between four and seven in the morning, , though obviously your position might be different. Then, try to know your own writing habits. When I was at university, we were constantly told to write "essay plans" for papers we needed to submit. This always seemed nuts to me, since I never planned absolutely everything in advance. I would always take a minute to sit down, or more frequently pace around like a loon, thinking about the general topic I had to write on and where my conclusion would go, occasionally even speaking bits out to myself to get the sound of things right. I'd then write like a madman just seeing where things took me, but always with the general destination in mind.I'd then go through and rewrite, revise, making additions and clarifications as needed, putting flesh on the bones, and occasionally rearranging a bone or two. Generally speaking, the more I did this, the better my writing got. This is the method I use of course, your mileage may vary, but the important thing is to always go through the process of making sure you are interested in, and informed about the topic, then ensuring you know roughly where you're going with your writing, then polishing it until it's as good as it could be. hth.
