This is an awesome game. I've been playing this on my Mac for around 6 or 7 weeks now but haven't posted here because I only just registered. I didn't really understand this game until I heard the podcast on Applevis. I've only made it to level 7 and scored just over 60  Thanks heaps for making this accessible for Mac users.

You can play in Firefox? When I tried that I got no sound. Weird.I'm surprised people are getting to level 18 - The highest I have managed to get is level 5, and that was only once, thanks to rapidfire on level 2's boss and a shield on level 4's boss. Other than that, I can't make it past the first boss. Sometimes I beat the mothership, but when it turns into those 5 targeting ships, I'm a goner.

Long post ahead, sorry if it goes all over the place, but the short answer is, I, love, this, game! SOme of this is tips, some of this is stories and some of this is feedback, and it's not in any kind of order.I have not been able to put this game down. It's gotten to the point where I once woke up and was thinking about theories as to how I could possibly improve my skill. However, to get very good at this game I think I'll have to spend a lot of time in the learn game sounds menu and look at the pitches. of course there's also luck. Once you know your default pitches it's a much easier game to play, and if you go a bit above and below using left and right arrows, that actually helps you to judge in game, so don't underestimate it. On a related note, I'm wondering if it might be possible to make the spacebar in the learn game sounds menu reset the pitch to default?Also... can you definitely get smart bombs as items? In all my time pl
 aying I've never gotten one and that's who knows how many sessions. My highest level is 9 and my highest score is over a million but I don't know the exact number. There's also a kind of luck of the draw element as well, sometimes you can be swarmed or sometimes you end up getting really confused by the pitches, but that's the game. You just try again next time and if you find a groove you can do rather well. Also, use the lock on mechanic with your bullets as well. YOu can fire jus slightly out of range of your radar and still hit, and do asort of run and gun, but only, really, with one ship. With multiple ships firing at different times, this tactic will not work, nor is it meant to. The aim of the game is survival and rescue if possible, but beware, at around level 5 or so this will get hard. I think at level 7 you can have 7 or 8 abductors on screen at once, so you have to end up climbing and diving all over the screen once they start targeting you, it g
 ets very hectic and it's amazing when you have to try tofind that good enough opening to fire. You end up taking several passes around in the hopes you won't get hit, and this is where learning your pitches truly helps. I was able to have a good four or five pass-around dodging/chacing session with around five abdutors on my tail, and I still, somehow, got through. But the next level, I wasn't so lucky. I had 7 on my tail yes, 7! And I was ducking and diving all over the place and managed to beat a couple, with five of them swarming me I managed to get way clear, came back down to go for the shot, managed to go back and fourth and destroyed two of them, and then a bullet hit me. This game kind of reminds me of a sort of 90's/2000's tv show feel to it, not like a movie as such, it's got a very interesting sound design going for it and I think you can thank pitermach for that from what I'm hearing.Keep up the great work!

You know what I was thinking. With a little text so you could see what you're arrowing over, or a way to click stuff, this game could be adapted for sighted use. Why adapt an audio game for sighted use? Because its important for sighted people to understand the critical nature of audio in their daily lives which they take for granted, because their vision is so overpoweringly prominent, they can't understand life without it. So, I say, if it is possible, and not a huge pain in the ass to do so, it might be a cool little experiment to try to make the game adaptable to sighted people. Of course, no graphics, I just mean, to get into the game, learn the sounds, etc.

Hello all. First of all, this is a superb game, i enjoy it a lot! There's a bug, which i didn't notice, just in this newest update. When you die with transporting abducter near you, or i think it just wanted to change in a mutant ship, you'll hear the abducter sound after your death as well, in the position when you died, and it cant be stopped for some reason.

I apologize for the double post. I just updated Dark Defender, adding a change that should probably fix a lot of the stuttering issues at least until much later levels. I didn't have much time to test this, but let me know if it works. I was able to play level 18 without any kind of stuttering on a mid 2013 Macbook Air.

There is one. That is the default pitch in the learn sounds menu. You can press the left and right arrows in that menu to mess with it, but the default pitch is the normal one. They of course fly at different levels.

at about what level do the enemies fly at as in the how many times do you press the up arrow to fight them. An aproximation will help. This is so that I can know what they sound like. I wish there was an example of an enemie properly lined up.

@Nick, there already is a learn sounds option, which even lets you play with the pitch with the left and right arrows, so you can see how it sounds. The ship shooting is somewhat random but still of course has a pattern, so I am not going to tell you when they are going to shoot, follow your instinct and try to time it! I am going to release an update to the game in a little bit, fixing a bug with the shield sound getting stuck and adding separate speech to the items, since people using Aria on Windows are having trouble with screenreaders interrupting the item name when they get them.@Dark, I don't think I will be able to have the tutorial ready for a while, I am going to be pretty busy for the next few weeks, but I'll do my best. The pitch is really the only thing you can rely on, that's how altitude is represented.

@Dark it already works with sapi, you just need to change tts in options to web tts. Plus it should work with any screen reader as it uses Aria which pretty much any screen reader today supports. I'm curious if you could get touchscreens supported somehow, since this is a web game it could work even on Android.

One of the "very!" few.The only other audio game that acts like an audio game on Chrome OS that I know of, is "Quentin C's Playroom," which works extremely  well, and no issues with the interface what-so-ever.If there are any other html5 accessible  games that folks know of, please feel free to share here or create a separate topic. (Besides that "alpha" RS Games web client...) *Sigh* BTW, I have an Acer Chromebook 11 currently.

@Muhammad, by default it uses an Aria Live Region, which means you might have to alt-tab out of and into the web view sometimes if you're having issues. I haven't heard of that happening often but i guess it's a possibility.@DD Planetoids do not get smaller with every level. I have never gotten a perfect run anytime past level 3. I am actually surprised you got to 9 a few hours after release.  If people find this an issue, I could make them smaller with every level, but that would also mean that the activity would be in a smaller area.As for your altitude comments, I usually have no problem with that, maybe I'm just used to the sound that the abductors make, I'm not sure if it's a matter of practice.Catching humanoids is definitely something you get used to. You'll have to get usd to finding which pitch of the sound is ab
 ove you, and when you get there just fly really tight circles. There is actually a quiet signal if you are right below a humanoid, but at high speeds it is not very useful at all, maybe just as a reference point for your circles somewhat.@Trenton I was wondering when someone would try this on ChromeOS!  I'm happy that it works, I assume this is one of the few audiogames you can natively play on that system.I'm glad you guys are liking the game!

I am so, so, so!!! happy that a game like this exists, where you can play it on a Chromebook.By  default its set to "Aria," though in the menu you can change it to using "Web TTS," at least if you are using the Chromevox screen reader.

It sounds cool. But I don't know why I feel I'm sounding a bit stupid in my question here  but, what speech engine does this game work with? Since it didn't work with my nvda nor even windows' sapi, though it's running fine and I could still play, but I'm like a deaf man at a wedding procession, since there's no screen reading. Thanks for the game.

it should work with nvda... or at least it does over hereI just have a couple commentsfirst, was it really intended to have to travel so far to reach the edge of the map? especially once I've gotten to level 9 and 10, there were so many captures I couldn't do anything about it became a question of which bullet I was eventually going to be hit by, loland is it just me who's having trouble telling when there's a ship that's basically right on top of me, but so far above the pitch modification makes it very hard to hear? and you can still hear it, but with your own ship's background it's kinda hard, at least for meI've also been having a bit of trouble actually catching the humanoids after destroying the ships they were in, sometimes I can do it but others it just fails, horribly and I'm not actually sure if they're falling faster than I'm going down, or if I'm just flying under them and I'm actu
 ally going way faster than I have tobut over all I like it, it's a neat concept
