Re: 100$ prize as Rocky's password scrambler is released

I am concluding that this encryption machine is safe to use, but only if you choose a strong password.  I am therefore releasing a version 2, with unlimited length of password, 24 encryption wheels instead of 12 and an optional second password that reorders the wheels.  Personally I am happy to keep all my passwords in one text file, but at some future point I intend to return to encryption and make a password keeper to conveniently store and retrieve passwords.  Thank you for taking part and please share any ideas for improvement, or tales of woe.

I have written version 2.  In passwordScramblerV2 there are now 24 wheels instead of 12, the master password has no limit in length, and there is an optional second password that will shuffle the 24 wheels, again no password length limit.  While this gives the user even more protection, it comes with an extra step and one more item to remember.  Any thoughts on this most welcome, not sure yet whether to release this version 2.

Re: 100$ prize as Rocky's password scrambler is released

On a more sober note.  No one has claimed the 100$ reward, but I have received several insights.  Firstly, python being a scripting language is apparently easy to decompyle. There are some methods out there to help hide source code, all rather complicated, and none of them seem to be any guarantee.  Basically, python is not what you would use for this sort of thing.  So, don't use this for military or commercial uses, ok?  Secondly, there's always reverse engineering, which is way more powerful than I had thought.  My current take on this, is that it will eventually come down to the  strength of the password.

Ctoth, well done on the source code.  I had been working on this myself yesterday but I didn't have any tools to extract the source.  I'm surprised it came out so clean!I have been working at this in a more traditional (low tech) way.  I made dozens of lists where I encrypted messages, looked for patterns, and eventually worked out what I referred to as the value wheel.  In your ripped source I see it was called ListA.From there I went with a different approach to the wheels.  Not necessarily by choice, but because it would have been a pretty lucky guess to know how he had internally arranged things.  If you were presented with 4 wheels that spun vertically and contained 5 symbols on each, their motions can be expressed as 5 horizontal wheels with 4 symbols, and so on.Before I went to work for the night, I had made some pretty good progress.  Without using Rocky's original program, I can take any message and en
crypt it with any 1 digit long key.  The results will be exactly as if Rocky's program had encrypted it.  I am also able to decrypt any message that was encrypted with a 1 digit long key.  That's a far cry from being solved, but I do think it shows how much of the machine's internal "wiring" someone can deduce just by looking for patterns in messages you encrypt.I have been working on the second wheel, but now that you've provided the source I may stop going in the direction I have been going in, and use this information to find a faster path.  When I say working on the second wheel, I don't mean the exact second wheel from Rocky's program.  It's confusing and complicated, because my approach was not identical to how Rocky built his program.  If I were to work out my second wheel, I would be able to encode and decode anything for key lengths of 1 or 2.  It would continue to climb, as each new whee
l was solved, until I found the key length that Rocky used to encode his message.

To everyone asking for hints and such, might it not be possible that there isn't supposed to be a winner?Instead of thinking about it as a quest from a game or a contest that is supposed to have a clear winner, think about it more as a test of security. In other words, no hints, no clues, nothing overt to help people win that 100 dollars. The prize is possibly a reward for anyone who can break the security of this program and hopefully show the developer where the security hole is.Remember that the developer said that if there was no winner, he would post the answer at the end of the contest. To me, this means that Rocky expects that there likely will not be a winner, and if there is one, it will not be easy to decrypt the phrase by any means.

smoothgunner The clipboard input should handle one return or new line, whereas the file input should handle multiple carriage returns or newlines.  The codes \n and \r are for newlines and carriage returns respectively.  Sadly where I have stripped such characters out of the encryption and reinserted them later, I only took out the \n and not the \r.  It's a bug, sorry.  On the up side the program did tell you, on the downside when you unscramble your 500 page novel, it will all be on one line!  It's at this point I realise I probably need 2 or 3 testers to hammer my programs before I release them.

Re: 100$ prize as Rocky's password scrambler is released

Rastislav.  I do not intend releasing the source code for the very reason that some folks might well be using this machine to encrypt their data.  However you have a point about developers, a modified version may well be of good practical use.  To comment on your other points, I really do not know whether it is possible to reverse engineer this machine.  The Poles were brilliant but had lots of messages and cribs to help.  On the other hand my whole machine is there to play with.  It may have weaknesses I do not know about.  For example just passing one letter through at a time gives an unnerving pattern.  However I would like to believe even with the machine itself broken, the data would still be secure with a secure password.  I honestly don't know the answer to that, but just in case, no source code.

You would not be giving this thief some hints to your master password would you?  However it is only fair that I share 2 assumptions that Aprone has suggested are reasonable:Firstly: The output phrase contains at least some recognisable English, so it's not just random but has some meaning and it's not just say a hexadecimal maths phrase such as D2 + 2D = FF.  Secondly the master password is not a single word, this would be a weak password.

[[wow]] 1 day and lots of interest and a lot of very astute observations.  I wanted to simulate the situation where you had entrusted important data to this encryption and then your computer was stolen.  Normally a hacker would not have access to the actual machine that made the code, but suppose the thief realised that you had used my encryption engine.  Suppose he also had a month to work on it before you told your bank to change your passwords.  He also has the basic description of the design of the machine from the instructions.  If this competition yields a winner from this starting point, then I need to change the machine and give less away about it's design.

Re: 100$ prize as Rocky's password scrambler is released

Hi folks,I took a crack at this earlier. Here is a copy of the source we  were able to reverse, along with my notes on the process. This seems to be a nice piece of crypto, but I am not a crypto expert unfortunately, so I can't say if it has any easily spotted vulnerabilities in it.The choice of key length seems a bit suspect, as it will use a min of the key length, rather than padding out the key to a known length. That said, I don't know enough about cryptonalysis to see where this leaves weaknesses.I would recommend looking for the constants that we have here, to see if they are part of a known crypto algo, in either plain or hex form. The brute-force solution will take forever if we run it up, it's not really something we could reasonably run, though it would eventually give us an answer I'll add this contributio
n in the hopes that somebody can move further with it, and use it as the key to unlock the actual algorithm in use.PyInstaller Extractor was used to reverse this, so it's probably good to add another level of protection on top of what you have. The code which we have reversed contains comments and other information, so I have abstracted it out to scramble and unscramble functions.Whereas the original code works by setting wheels each time, this code has been modified to set the key on encrypt or decrypt, forcing the wheels to a known statefrom __future__ import print_function

quote from the instructions: This password scrambler uses 12 wheels, instead of 3.  It uses the printable ASCII set of 95 characters, instead of 26.  More than one wheel rotates after each letter is encrypted.  There are just under 10 to the power of 24 starting positions for the wheels.  i.e. one billion billion billion. Also, each wheel is randomised, having 95 factorial possibilities.  Equivalent to 10 to the power of 148.  me again: unfortunately I've just tested and you can imput as many characters as you want, there is no maximum number of characters or words. So the possibilities are virtually endless.

The maximum password length is 12.To brute force, in the worst case the possibilities are 94^12. If we consider just letters, it is 52^12, which is still an inconceivable number. The password and the wheel is most likely related-I would suspect the first letter swings the first wheel, for example. Perhaps it's the second letter though, or random.choice(letters).

the biggest problem in decyphering this is that the master password can be anything from a single letter to a whole phrase so the possibilities that you can try are endless. Even if by pure luck someone could find a pattern the fact that capital letters are used as well as signs make this a pretty huge task.

Re: 100$ prize as Rocky's password scrambler is released

Victorious, here is text copied from the program's help file.  You are wondering which mainstream-standardized methods it uses, but it does not use any.  Rocky wrote the encryption himself rather than pasting together what is already out there.5. So, how it all works:The Romans had a simple encryption method, called a Caesar shift.  Their device consisted of just one wheel with the roman letters.  When the wheel was turned, say 5 clicks, the letter A, became F, and the letter B became G.While this was useful for battlefield messages, it was easy to decipher.   In later centuries a similar wheel was used but the alphabet was randomised.  For some centuries this method was considered unbreakable.  However,  it was eventually shown to be vulnerable to frequency analysis.  This encryption method is now known as a simple substitution cypher. In world war II, the german armed forces made use of th
eir renowned Enigma machine.  Electrical circuits ran from a keyboard, through 3 wheels and displayed the encryption via a set of light bulbs.  The starting position for the wheels were different for every message.  Most importantly, after each letter was encrypted, one or more of the wheels would rotate.  Hence this machine was not prone to frequency analysis. The numbers involved here are huge.  The machine was considered to be unbreakable  However, it was broken, but only with a massive effort, with stolen code books, with captured machines, and with multiple cribs. This password scrambler uses 12 wheels, instead of 3.  It uses the printable ASCII set of 95 characters, instead of 26.  More than one wheel rotates after each letter is encrypted.  There are just under 10 to the power of 24 starting positions for the wheels.  i.e. one billion billion billion. Also, each wheel is randomised, having 95 f
actorial possibilities.  Equivalent to 10 to the power of 148.  And just in case your computer is stolen by an ace hacker, the program has a few half second delays built in.  I believe it would take a batch file many thousands of lifetimes to crack a decent password.

Unless you post a technical overview of the cryptographic operations used, I'd take this with a large dose of salt. For example, how is the password database encrypted? Is PBKDF2 used? Is authenticated encryption used? What libraries are used for crytpographic operations? Also, if anyone does manage to guess the plaintext, that would make me even more nervous about using this.

mastodont, the "advanced knowledge of how the encryption system works" is precisely what people should be able to figure out by using the encoder and looking for patterns. It may not be possible, but even if it ended up being impossible I'm sure a person could get very far along in deconstructing this.

given the encryption method I would say that it is impossible to decode the phrase without any hints regarding the master password or without having advanced knowledge of how the encryption system works. Anyways, if the challenge requires coding knowledge then i'm out because I don't have any.

Rastislav, I believe this can be solved.  It would be helpful to already know how the program is working internally, but that itself can be discovered with some work.  I believe this contest would be too easy if Rocky gave us the source code.  Remember, it is meant to be a challenge.

Re: 100$ prize as Rocky's password scrambler is released

Hi,Rocky Waters, i wanted to say It in release of BeadBrains, but here is also place, you are making perfectly your work, only little better control style of BeadBrains will be appreciated, but that is not important, important is game engine and functionality, which is perfect in your case, keep good job.For password scrambler, I want to ask, have you not planned to release It as opensource? If I guess It right, It is stream cypher, so can help developers to protect theyr data. This problem have for example I in my project Blindcraft, Minecraft for blinds, in which is need to cypher map, but in reading process is important to know a meaning of actuall processed character. Aes cypher provided by bgt engine is not good for It because of needed blocks, so I am working on cypher algorithm based on enigma m3 model, with hundreds of rotors and 256 input characters on each one, but your algorithm can also do this well.Second reason is, that now people are trying to gue
ss password to given phrase, but It is inpossible without knowing, what actually program is doing, and how It works. Crypto-analysts from Poland and later UK vould never able to crack Enigma machines, if they have not working exemplar and can see, what machine is doing with theyr input. Second step was to create a bombe to crack It, but similar device can be only constructed if there is example. In this case, if you not release source code, I believe noone will ansver right in time, but someone can create working model later by reverse engineering, and possibly crack algorithm.Take it only as perspective, if your algorithm is really unbreakable, you can make it public. I will also release my Enigma modification called Superenigma by the way, I really believe that It is unbreakable and very fast when right used, only now code little annoyed myself, because changes that I did rolled back for some reason, so I can make It again, but I will done It in some time, and release
as a class usable in other projects, that is also my suggestion to you.GreetingsRastislav

Re: 100$ prize as Rocky's password scrambler is released

This Password Scrambler is a flexible, easy to use, but powerful, encryption machine. These days, most folks have many passwords and other confidential information. Remembering them all becomes a hassle and keeping them secure is not easy. Using a pen and paper is not ideal and also not an option for people with a visual impairment. This password scrambler will enable you to encrypt passwords, short phrases or whole files, be it your diary or a copy of your will. You can safely keep these where you like, either on an external hard drive or on your computer. You can then unscramble what you want, when you want.
