Re: Nintendo switch, give us a screen reader! not trying to be rude but i found a problem with your plan. you see. a nintendo switch apps can only run and interact with its self. and they cant run in the background in any way. if you close it its gone. so it would have to be its own menu system then. homebrew can fix that though. sys moduals can run in the background and work just perfectly for a screen reader. no mater the thing they keep running. Re: Nintendo switch, give us a screen reader! if only nintendo could make it like the wii...when you press a instead of the menu with no sound i it, you get a small sound from the game or anything you've selected. that would make you get what the hell you're on.if you have the normal cartrigges you can just click the first option to the left in the menu, the one with the high pitched click and you're sure to go on that specific game. note that ones you've used an app it goes to the far left of the app's menu, while the others slide to the right. so lets say that we have apps 1 2 and 3if i play with 2, the menu order is going to be 2 1 and 3, if i then play with 3 it's going to be 3 2 and 1 and so on. that's how i've learned how to play with it.also, i never used youtube on it, kinda pointless when i have a good old i phone that is a bagillion times more accessible. That statement is probably just there to check off a box, like "oh yeah, we have an accessibility feedback number, back to working on the next Mario."I'm sorry, as much as I would love to have a full-featured screen reader on the switch, giant games companies such as Nintendo have been slow to take visually impaired feedback into consideration when creating their hardware and software, *cough* Soni *cough*. While some games companies (Naughty Dog, The Coalition, Etc.) have started to add accessibility into their games, it will most likely be another decade or two before screen readers are universally available on all consoles. I applaud Microsoft, as much as I dislike them as a company, for at least trying to start the ball rolling in this direction, and hopefully Narrator will be even better on the XBox Series X. Also, there changing the UI for the ps5 from what i've heard so I'm thinking, just thinking here, that they might do at least something. xBox's have a screen reader, but it was already built into windows, and microsoft actually made it decent, and who gave a fuck about narrator until windows 8 came out, seriously. everyone already had there own screen reader, and microsoft just made there's better out of the box, for many regions not just the US, and they didn't even have to. I highly doubt they added the limited tts they have purely out of good will, since it's so restrictive you can tell they were following the law exactly to the letter and nothing else. Hell, they even put a bloody chip on the US consoles so even if! you got a console on the english region settings, you wouldn't be able to use tts outside of the US unless you import a unit. But until someone from this forum has received a ps5 and explored the options there are, then confirmed that no, nothing was changed, I'm not going to assume anything. Event that won't help, because they already have too large of a customer base. Remember, if even the last of us 2 couldn't make Sony unregion-restrict and improve accessibility on the ps5, then there's no way in hell Nintendo is going to give a good crap about it at this point unless someone gets the nfb involved to go and annoy them and sue them 5 ways to Sunday. Knowing how much of a brouhaha there was over pokemon go #accessibility demands, I wouldn't put it past them. Pokemon Go had the advantage of more or less fading into obscurity for a long time, the Nintendo Switch isn't doing that any time soon. Yes, I know designing and programming a screen reader is hard work, but Nintendo is a massive company, I imagine it wouldn't be hard for them to find the right programmers for the job. Re: Nintendo switch, give us a screen reader! Yes, but on the 3ds and the wii you could atleast know what you were duing on the main menu, you had sounds when you focused on an application. Nintendo switch doesn't have that kind of audio. Sure it has sounds when you open one of the nintendo things at the buttom, but you need to open them in order to get it. Then if you didn't want to go into that app you need to go back to the main menu, remember were that app was, and then try to find the app your loking for. Re: Nintendo switch, give us a screen reader! Lol comparing the implementation of a screen reader onto a console with making discord accessible is like comparing apples and oranges. Discord just happened to hire a programmer who heard some of the complaints, and all they had to do was to label the unlabeled controls and change the way server selection works. Making an entire console speak requires far more effort and, while I know fully that Nintendo has the resources to do this, I also know that of all the console makers, they've done the least for a11y. Even Soni's done more, since they at least follow CVAA to the letter. That's what pressured them into adding their minimalistic tts onto US consoles. I wonder how Nintendo skirts by the CVAA laws. Their operation is similar to Soni, they're a japenese company that sells to the US market, so shouldn't they also be required to add a11y features to all parts of their consoles that access some form of communication function? Nintendo should focus on accessibility. They get the munny from the people who buy the devices, so then why can't they listen and do somthing with the feedback? Nintendo needs to learn this.
