Someone i believe released qemu on iOS for jailbroken devices, so maybe he ran a linux distro on it and ran orca with voxin. Or maybe, he did the same thing with a pongo shell, though i’m not sure if you can run linux on it yet. So yeah, technically its possible, though i never tried it.

Re: Switching from IOS to android, any tips?

Yeah, I was gonna say, lol you can actually do that. Though there are definitely differences between the audex theme and an actual iPhone that people who know both devices will definitely notice, it's not a one to one representation. On that note, and sorry for being OT... but does anyone know how to fix this issue with Audex on Android 10 where it seems like half the time the beginning of sounds seems to just be cut off if the phone isn't already playing sounds? It's not that big of a deal though, lol it just bothers me.

I'd like to see video evidence of you performing some every day actions on your phone, perhaps reading a news story or something or changing a few settings. It'd be even better if you could flip between eloquence and another built-in iOS voice on video.I do think though that just like the rest of your grandiose statements, this one is also bullshit but I'm happy to be proved wrong.

Re: Switching from IOS to android, any tips?

Yes it does. It's important to note though that it only dims the screen, not completely disable it. Only phones that can basically do that are Samsung ones. Either way, if you do a down and right swipe (all in 1 gesture) to get to Talkback's global context menu, the option is in there. There's also an option in Talkback's settings to enable it every time you turn TB on. Commentary also has it, though it's in a slightly less obvious place. Use the same gesture as described above to access the equivalent of the global context menu, but then swipe straight down from there to access the extended menu. Actually I think by default you swipe right, but I changed mine to behave more like Talkback because swiping vertically down my screen just felt weird. I don't think there's an option to dim the screen if you're using commentary when it turns on though, so I think you need to manually do it every time. There's settings for just about everything though, so I could very well be wrong.

When I'm connect to it, is there a way that I can routing the Talkback or Voice Assistant voice to my phone's speaker while the music continue playing on my JBL Bluetooth speaker? Thanks.

Re: Switching from IOS to android, any tips?

I had two huawei devices. Back then the accessibility of huawei devices was aweful. I htink it has changed recently though yet I can't trust huawei. Plus my apps would randomly stop working and that's a big nut driver lol.Since I use samsung devices I'm facing little to no dificulties. The only issues that I have now with my galaxy A60 device is the only usb-type c it provides that I have to use it for both charging and headphones, Not to mention finding a headphone that has a usb-type c connecter is a pain in the back for me. I'm getting oneo f those cables or addaptors if you call them, but yeah it still is something. My other issue is the back, home and recents buttons that i have to double tap on them to activate them. I mean voice assistant has an option to fix this but talk back doesn't, and talk back was the screen reader I was very much used to. I'm getting used to voice assistant too so I don't know if that one really counts as an issue.Oh there's another issue with android 9 and that is the volume of responsive voices such as eloquence or espeak. When I want to read something, Tts starts talking, the volume is a bit lower than what it really should be, and quickly it increases until it stops at the correct point. This  however, is very likely to be fixed in the next updates because I had a similar problem on andoird seven with another mobile phone and it got fixed when I upgraded my phone to android eight.one.

Re: Switching from IOS to android, any tips?

Hey all,So to bring this thread back from the dead, I have a few questions. These are in no particular order.1, what exactly is so great about commontary? One of the big things I've always wanted to see in talkback is a roter of sorts, at least something better than the one we have right now, but when I tryed commontary we didn't even have that, and in many ways it just seemed like talkback but with a lot of bells and wistles, most of them paid.2, does anyone know of a way to make espeak only speak in one language? I hate it when the acsent constantly changes based on the dialect of what you're reading, I'd much rather just have it in english US for the few times I want to use it.3, is there any kind of moddern port of shine + available? A friend of mine used it back in 2016 and it looked very interesting, but I've herd it has since been discontinued.Thanks.

Re: Switching from IOS to android, any tips?

@cMerry: See here's the thing though.1. Pixel's audio-out circuitry sucked, so Pixel2 users weren't missing much to begin with when the headphone jack was removed. I know this as a Pixel2 user myself.2. With Bluetooth 5 on the Pixel 2, and most if not all audio devices on Bluetooth 4.2 at least, you have much, much better audio quality, and much better response time. With Bluetooth audio so good on Android, it isn't as much of a loss to not have the headphone jack. On IOS, all they cared about was quality at the obscene aac256bit bitrate. On Android with the help of AptX you have adaptive bitrate that will reserve a high quality sample rate for music and a lower quality for everything else (Talkback, for example). So as long as the battery is good on both devices, the delay is next to none.3. In the midrange Pixel3A, the budget-friendly Pixel3 that is expected to hopefully help the Pixel gain a more international following, priced at around $450, is rumored to actually have a headphone jack. Google learned that usbC audio actually introduced more problems than they had expected, as not all usbC ports were actually USB3.1. Some were type-c versions of USB3.0, sacrificing speed and quality through a cheapskate route. This is why not all USBC devices actually have power delivery charging. With different speeds and configurations, it is next to impossible to create a universal USBC audio solution that is backwards compatible while retaining a high quality standard. Unless of course you force all manufacturers using USBC to upgrade to 3.1, but that's never gonna happen immediately. Lol. For that reason, Google is considering bringing back the most universal audio standard of the headphone jack.So the difference between Google and Apple in this case is that Google learned from experience, and apple keeps making proprietary airpod bullshit. Even Google's own Pixel Buds have similar benefits to airpods (instant pair through Google Cloud, Google Assistant built in, and a charging case.) However, unlike airpods, instant pair and assistant functionality work on almost any new android device, in addition to the Pixel line.

Re: Switching from IOS to android, any tips?

My main reason for switching to android was that I can't see myself being able to keep up with apple's pricing moddles for much longer, sooner or later i'd just be forced to switch due to lack of money. Out of curiosity, I asked how much a month the 8+ or the 10 would be per month, and I can't remember exact numbers, but they were both at least over £50. And knowing apple, that'll have gone up even more in a couple years, and chances are they'll always have at least a few million people buying there crap because they're either afrade of change or just don't know any better. I do like ios, but there's only so much I can really take from a cumpony like apple. Kind of amusingly, part of my reasoning for switching to android was also the removal of the headphone jack from newer Iphones, turns out the phone I have right now also doesn't have a head phone jack. Oh well.

Re: Switching from IOS to android, any tips?

I have no doubt old devices run perfectly well on newer versions of Android via Custom Rom. And I tend to forget a bit too easily that running IOS 9 on an IPhone 4S back then wasn't a good idea. I don't know if IOS 12 does run smoothly on a 5S. If yes, that's cool, yet we don't know about the future. And it doesn't erase the fact that IOS 11 wasn't nearly as smooth on the same device, again provided it was true, because I don't have that device. As for OCR,, I guess if you are using the same software from one phone to another and your camera is good on a hardware standpoint, you should probably be fine. Just like a Google Camera port may help some phones perform better in that regard, though, of course, I wish I had the eyes to compare for myself. @24: I am not too sure what to think about HMD, I have read several reviews saying the Nokia 7.1 performs strangely low compared to what it's hardware and software would suggest, even when compared with less powerful Android One phones such as the Moto One. I found this article:https://medium.com/@roundedeverett/who- … 24ecbc52a9Everyone's free to think what he/she wants about it, and search further, as the problem has been discussed in several places. In short, with Nokia devices, you may have what Android One stands for, but only on the surface.

Re: Switching from IOS to android, any tips?

Pixel is probably the best phone you can get. Unfortunately Google Lookout is not available for UK folks yet, but hopefully soon it will be. Google lookout is basically Google's Seeing AI, except it does all the work without a network connection, and thanks to the device's internal machine learning capabilities of the CPU.simter wrote:it started that the companies care more about a good design then funktionality. the werzed of all those is huavay. The only thing the doodes care about there these days is the camera. While I generally agree Huawei blows and Samsung spends more on PR and poking fun at their competition rather than well thought out hardware, (they're about as guilty as Apple in that respect) I wouldn't belittle the need for a good camera. I'm actually at the point where a phone has to cover all the bases equally if I'm going to buy one. A good camera is an absolute necessity for OCR, and with the Pixel camera even a pro photographer could get away with using the thing as a backup camera. Also, I do have to disagree on the whole lack of updates. You can hold onto an iPhone, if you're ok with it being throttled in due time, or not being able to jump back to old firmware. While Android phone customization via the custom rom route is more of a process, it's worth it if you want to decrease depreciation of you phone's value. For example, I was able to sell my Nexus 5 at a pretty reasonable price because it was running an aftermarket AOSP distribution of Android 7.0 Nougat. Even though the phone would not be in line to officially obtain Nougat, it ran extremely well, so it didn't matter that a custom rom was installed. That is something even jailbroken devices can only dream of at night.

Nokia is perfectly fine, and both of the complaints in post 22 had to do with Android as a hole, not Nokia specifically.  They were bought out by a Finish company called HMD, so they are just using the brand name, but their phones consistently take the top spot for budget handsets, previously held by Motorola G series. The amount of features you get for the price, the up to date Android versions they ship with, the 95% stock experience, and the prompt updates really can't be beat without rom loading a chinese phone, which isn't always very easy.@22There are other software keyboards available that may improve your typing experience.  And I think people have figure out ways to get talkback on the phone by them selves but I agree that's annoying.

Lol I almost did the same thing, I almost got the nokia7+ when I asked the sails guy how much the 1+6t was. I was kind of confused when he said nokia, but I just thought nokia must've been 1+'s providers or something even though i'd never herd that anywhere before. I think if you can get the phone you actually wanted that'd be great, although i'd never recommend anything modern by nokia. There prime time was more in the erlie 2000s. If you want cheap and good, go with one of the 1+ phones, or if you're willing to up the price a bit the pixels aren't a bad choice either. My friend also had a samsung 8+ or at least he used to, not sure if he managed to break it yet lol, but apparently those are good enough phones as well. For me typing took some getting used to, i'm still struggling a little, but since i got gboard up and running it's been a lot nicer and a much smoover expeerience over all. I'm still trying to figure out how dictation works, but yeah that's another thing. But my god with a screen that small it's no wonder you're struggling. On another note, once i'd figured out how to make google keybord cooperate i was able to sign into skype just fine. Kind of interesting it didn't work with the regular one.

I don't want to put anyone off of buying android but for me the typing was terrible. The keyboard is tiny and the case that came with the phone made my fingers so sweaty.Over all it wasn't a good experience.I'm going back to IOS and am going to sell this phone tomorrow.

Re: Switching from IOS to android, any tips?

I would admit that is the cool thing about IPhones, you can stick to them for a while. On Android you would have to install a custom rom to stay up to date for the same amount of time as with an IPhone. It is yet again something Huawei no longer allows, and one of my main griefs against them. Not that I have done it myself, I was never too sure about how much it was doable without sighted help, and would rather wait for the end of official support for my device to do that. One thing is sure though, even if I never end up doing it, I will systematically prefer devices and brands that allow it as long as they exist. Also, @Brad: Don't worry, the current Nokia devices have the sounds you want, only rearranged in a less complex way than in the symbian era.

Ok, after messing with this some more, I have a few more questions.1, are there any good twitter clients, or is the regular one accessible? I got it, but the sign in button just wouldn't activate.2, is there any way around these random input boxes that just refuse to open? I got skype, but when I clicked on the input box to type in my skype name and things nothing came up on the screen so I couldn't do anything.

So, i ended up getting a pixel. Do you have to do anything special to activate google keyboard. I ask because it seemingly came with this phone, but typing still seems kinda clunky.

Thanks everyone for your help. Right now i’m thinking 1 plus 6t, it’s relatively cheap at least by phone standards and provides most of what i need. Maybe samsung as well, but then again i sort of already know how to use talkback, so having to get used to a hole new screen reader might just cause more head akes than anything.

Re: Switching from IOS to android, any tips?

A lot of people seem to have problems with soft braille keyboard but if you can get it to install, it works wonders.I'm using a motorola moto play 6 and I seriously can't imagine myself going back to iOS for a very long time.I've been trying out envision AI for the past two days and although it's been rather hit or miss, I do see it as a great substitution for seeing AI on ios. I don't know if it's because I'm still running it on a trial, though it does seem to be missing a few things, like color, light and currency detection.I use eloquence mostly because it is the only synth I know of that supports reading emoji. I wish there was a modern port of eSpeak that did...That being said, I can't really recommend motorola. They've done away with there update policy completely, and now at this point your lucky if you get security patches. If you don't care about that, then sure, go with the moto play 6. Otherwise, look elsewhere. Also, why in the world has everyone fallen in love with samsung? I could get a used essential phone, or one plus 5 for two samsung galaxy s8 phones and get pretty much similar performance. Also if you intend to use soft braille with a samsung device, not even recent phones give you enough precision that the keyboard needs to work so there's that option gone. I'm lucky this phone I use does. That being said, there are a couple things to get  used to. Samsung is the only company that does the two finger double tap, and as far as I know, it's only specific to samsung's own apps. Also one last thing you might have to take some time to get used to is precision. Where as iOS is a lot more forgiving, talk back still requires some serious precision with your gestures that comes with time.I hope this helps you in some way. If you can find the right phone that isn't too loaded down, and that has decent hardware, you will have an amazing experience with android.Good luck!

Re: Switching from IOS to android, any tips?

Or you do what I did in store, lol since I bought my Galaxy S8 straight from Samsung, I just asked the sales guy at the counter to turn out voice assistant for me, I believe either it comes preset as the accessibility shortcut or it asks you when you turn it on for the first time. That's assuming you're actually going to the store though...But yeah, what's been said pretty much covers everything, Gboard is really good. The Samsung keyboard I find the keys themselves seem to be very, very small... combined with how smooth the phone is... for me it was almost too smooth. But once I switched to Gboard actually typing precisely got a lot easier.

Re: Switching from IOS to android, any tips?

regarding keyboards, I think this is a pretty complete discussion for many alternatives. My conclusion is that voice dictation is just a blast to use and works amazingly well 98% of the time. Combining this with editing text and the keyboard auto suggestions (which really are good at learning how you express yourself) probably is satisfactorily enough for me.Regarding the setup process, the more modern android ones out there are easy to set up.. you have to hold the power button until the boot menu appears, then place two fingers on the screen and wait about 3 to 5 seconds and the screen reader should be running. The initial screens are accessible and all, but entering your credentials and data can be slow, so its better to have some sighted help setting it up for you. If you want to do it entirely by yourself of course  Its doable, but not that convenient.

Hi,Thankfully I do have a little bit of expeerience with using talkback so i'm not coming in completely clueless or anything. Another question, how much, if any, sited help will I need during the setup process? My main concern is the keyboard, if it's really as bad as some say it is, will it at least be good enough to get me through the setup process until I can get a better one? What is the default one like anyway, I herd it's sort of like the ios one but with tutch typing always enabled, which in theory should at least be ok for a little while since that's generally how I type on the iphone anyway.

Re: Switching from IOS to android, any tips?

What support are you talking about? Is it software, technical? Help in general?Anyway, once you buy and set up your new Android device, you need to think out of the box. You have to understand that Android is not iOS and so you will need to start everything from scratch. There will no longer be a "double tap with two fingers" gesture that will be applicable to so many popular applications. There will also not be something close to a roter on Android, or to be more precise, there will be a simpler idea of roter. If you swipe up or down on the screen, you automatically select an item type to move with. It could be a character, word, line, link, heading, list, and so on. To move with that type of item, you swipe left or right. On iOS, however, it's a different thing. The keyboard you're looking for is called Google Keyboard, or GBoard. There is another alternative called Blind Accessibility Keyboard which costs something like 3.9 dollars and is especially designed for blind and visually impaired users.Since you're switching to Android, you may also consider buying Eloquence. It is perhaps the best TTS for use with Talkback as it is really responsive. You also have other options such as Acapela Voices, Vocalizer expressive voices, and so on.If you used Braille Screen Input on the iPhone, there is no such thing on Android. There are some keyboards like Swift Braille Keyboard, Soft Braille Keyboard, Advanced Braille keyboard and so on. There is always the same problem going on: you have to disable Talkback to write with them, and second is that the Braille Keyboard should be the only input tool to use. If you used a Braille Display on the iOS, you need to install Google Braille Back once you buy your Android device. My suggestion if you're buying an Android device is, if you really want to have an iPhone-like experience, buy yourself a Samsung device. Most of the new phones come with Voice Assistant installed, most if not all of them have a direct access option which allows you to turn on and off an accessibility service by tripple tapping the home button. The camera app on Samsung devices offers you voice feedback on the position of the person in front of the camera. There are also some other things I can't remember that are pretty accessible on Samsung devices but it's been a long time since I've used a Samsung Device myself.Hope this helps.Cheers!
