Re: Tool: Decompiling Hot Soup Processor Games

There use to be a pretty good text game maker in the late 90s called adrift. It use to be free, then I think it became paid.It was quite easy to use for basic stuff, but got a bit complicated if you wanted to use variables and events to make certain tasks trigger.

Re: Tool: Decompiling Hot Soup Processor Games

Theoretically speaking, making text games is equal to a whole bunch of variable substitutions. So, if it were open sourced, all we need to do would be changing the variable names. But unfortunately not. I don't even know if the developer is active somewhere on the internet.

Re: Tool: Decompiling Hot Soup Processor Games

I wasn't really talking about interactive fiction and the like, but the engine Morokuma used to create games like Tia Story and Heaven and Earth War, which if I remember correctly are text based (but also include music and sound), use menus to travel between rooms and manipulate objects, and have a turn-based combat system built-in. It would be nice to have a version of that engine (called Text Game Maker, if memory serves), designed for the English language. TGM is made in HSP, so someone like Yukio with enough knowledge of both languages could translate it, but unfortunately the program isn't open source.

Yes. This is the official one, so you don't have to worry. You'll be able to focus on translating alternative magic, but the amount of text is massive.Oh wait, if you dump the original source and translated version into separate branches on a git repository, you can directly translate the game and even maintain the translation while perfectly keeping up-to-date with the latest official version? Nice.

Ahoy.Hope to make my intent clear: I want to translate these games into English. To do so, I will need the game text (strings) in order to feed them into my CAT tool. Playing through these games with a text hooker would take too long so I found decompilation to be the fastest method to pluck these strings. I am unaware of other methods at this time.

The problem with decompilation tools like this is your not going to get back the original code at all. Good luck actually figuring out how the code works; if HSP compiles directly to machine code like I suspect it does, good luck getting anything useful out of a decompiler.

Re: Tool: Decompiling Hot Soup Processor Games

Everything everywhere is little endian for the most part.  The only real exception I can think of offhand are some network protocols. There are other exceptions but in general if you want to be efficient you code as little endian and call it a day because that's what all popular modern microprocessors use by default.Decompiling isn't illegal unless the software had an EULA that says that it is, but since the sighting gaming industry is allowing for mods even in those cases half the time, I'm not so sure this is that big a deal.  It's kind of in poor taste to come here and be like "here is how to decompile everyone's games", and this will probably start up a bunch of discussions on how to protect source code shortly, but it probably doesn't cross the line of illegal given that audiogames don't even have or present EULAs, or if it is it's the kind of illegal that would be really hard to defend in court.
