Re: Windows VPS's?

I previously started with a Windows VPS on vps-net, but then someone told me how I could go much cheaper by using Linode to host my own web site. Games like STW are hosted on a Windows VPS, from what I understand, and OVH is the current VPS provider.HTH! :-)

Re: Windows VPS's?

@Defender: You'd be right, except:Turret wrote:I am looking for a VPS to host a website and some servers and such on.There isn't much justification for running a Windows Server in that scenario. Dude wants to make a website. If he was running a radio station and using Station Playlist Studio he'd need Windows. Owing to personal experience, I think everyone here is making a smart decision and saving this guy from the potential torture that is Windows Server, particularly when taken into account that current models of Windows 10 do not allow you to disable the network protocols that are problematic and stand in the way of rdp. Because of that, I had to switch to Android (Android!) to perform the necessary steps to get NVDA Remote configured over RDP, and that's on top of dealing with a locked down internet explorer. Brutal. Learning the commandline will be a walk in the park in terms of aggravation levels.@Chris: You don't really need customer service or sighted assistance to enable sound.Connect over rdp.windows+r for runcmdWait 5 or so seconds, thennet start audiosrvThen, windows+r againThen type Narrator.Configure audiosrv to start automatically through services.msc.You'll want to at least make it as far as getting Narrator running before RDP on Windows kicks you off. After Narrator's running, you can go ahead and connect with the rdp client on your Android. You can't use the windows key on Android, which is why you want to take care of Narrator on the windows client-side first and foremost. Download nVDA/NVDA Remote, going through the security screens along the way. Forward port 6837 through windows firewall, and get an nvda remote connection going. You should then be good to go.

Re: Windows VPS's?

https://www.vultr.com/servers/windowsIt looks like the cheapest plan is $20 a month, which isn't as bad as I thought. You either get Windows Server 2012 R2 or 2016. I don't know how accessible Vultr is, and you'll either need to get customer support or a sighted person to help you enable audio, but that should work if you spend enough time with it.

Re: Windows VPS's?

You guys are doing it again...  This is the same thing that happened in the "how do I buy Vipmud 2" and "some weird JAWS problems" topics. If the thread creator didn't ask for your opinion about it, you probably shouldn't share it, but if you do, at least don't add to things by posting about it when someone else already has!The title of this topic was not (Need help deciding between Windows and Linux VPS) so you can quite safely assume that the user knows why they are choosing this rout, especially when it's already very well known that Windows VPS's are allot more expensive and looking at the plan prices will tell them if it's too much anyway, at which point they might come back and ask about Linux regardless...

Re: Windows VPS's?

Im with everyone here. Windows is a really really bad choice for a VPS. I have an ubuntu vps and I love it. Most of the time   you can just google if your having problems.

Re: Windows VPS's?

Linux all the way. No sense trying to set up a wamp stack for an extra $15 tacked onto your server just for licensing alone.

Re: Windows VPS's?

Hi!I use deinserverhost.deProbably the cheapest prices I've seen.Friendly support. Also note that it's not a scam, I've signed up to them, paid for a vps, and I got one, no problems or catches. Also, linux ftw, it'll be much much cheaper and it'll use less memory and require you to spend less money!

Re: Windows VPS's?

If you just want to host a web site, you should use Linux and Linux-centric software.  It will save you a ton of money.  Obviously if you need to run something specific to Windows, that's different, but Windows VPSs tend to be expensive and Windows hosting/server software tends to be rather baroque and difficult to configure properly.  Windows is a consumer OS that Microsoft decided to try to sell to the server market, and even Microsoft these days doesn't seem to really like it anymore.Any provider will let you install anything you want on it.  The entire point of a VPS is that you get full access like it's a computer in your living room.  Real problem is going to be the terrible latency, you'll probably need NVDA remote and you won't want to try to stream audio directly save for initial setup.Maybe someone will know of a good provider that's cheap, but last time I looked into this it was like $50/month for Windows (vs. $5/month for Linux).
