Rotel kit has always been pretty good, but a 25-30 year-old amp may
need some tlc as some components struggle to last that long.

Hi guys,
I am using the digital out of the SB3 with an external linear PSU
feeding a Tact RCS2.0 into a DAX Decade DAC into a TVC pre and the
power amps are Nuforce Ref9s driving Vienna Accoustics Mahler speakers.
I am quite happy with this set up but I slightly prefer the sound when I

Hi,
How does replaygain affects the sound quality if I use an external DAC
and I have fixed my digital out on the SB2? I had read that if you use
digital output and a external DAC so you have to fix the digital volume
control for the best sound quality. With replaygain the fixed volume
would be

I used to have a Tact RCS2.0 and a modified DAX Decade, although the
Tact did wonders with room correction I felt it robbed the music of
life and benefited from re clocking, (a Meridian 518 before the Tact
and an Apogee Big Ben after the Tact). I lived with that for a while

Gary,
I know what you mean about the Tact robbing the music, I couldnt live
without it though since I have a nigthmare of a room. Since I modified
the Tact with a better PSU, better isolation transformers on the
inputs, Black Gates and much better quality caps in the critical areas,
it is better

I didn't have the SB3 when I had the Tact/Big Ben, I had the Off-Ramp
Turbo which is similar. I commented on it with the Big Ben in this

Gary,
thanks, I will follow that thread.
I know of Tony's cables but never really tried them in my system.
I forgot to mention the power conditioning. Yes, I do have one, my own
design (I was a digital design engineer before I move into management,
with few years experience ;) ). It

The Connoisseur cables work well with the SB, Tact and digital amps but
not with the DAX. The DAX worked better with Krystal Kable's Silver
Mercury or The Missing Link Reference (the Silver Mercury had the
edge).

As I understand things, the fixed digital out simply stops the volume
control changing the digital out level. However, replaygain (which I do
use by the way) will gain/boost the level regardless of this setting.
It is highly debateable if this leads to any degradation in quality.

Can anyone comment on the quality of Speakercraft amps? I am finally
getting ready to put in a squeezebox in my kitchen and was going to get
KEF iQ1s and the either the Speakercraft BB50-S or the Parasound zAmp

I'm looking into ripping my cd collection to a hard drive source(as flac
files). I've read reviews about sonos, olive opus, transporter etc. I've
learned a lot about the different systems and am leaning toward the
Transporter but there are a few basics I'd like some help with. The

The only real difference between what CD drive you use comes down to
Error Reporting (some drives are better than others at saying oops, I
think I got this, but not sure) and longevity (rip a thousand CDs and
some drives will end up dying in the process).
Software can correct for the first case
Or somehow cause firmware 15 to have the correct phase again, but don't
tell anyone, and see if they notice. A true blind test :-)

Many acoustic treatments do noting that is important. What you need

AKM is releasing their newest miracle dac chip called AK4397.
Those who have tried it claim this is the best dac ever.
Apparently it can be swapped with the AK4396.
Any plans on incorporating it in the current or next Transporter?

Yes, it was included with the service. I think most calibrators do
that. For instance, on the Earthworks audio site it says:
