To drop more into the fire, a lot of new artists - those who self record
and produce at home, especially their first works - usually deliver 320k
MP3s to their labels for digital distribution. Certainly the common case
for electronic / dance music.
So, if I fill two bottles, one clear and the other green glass, from the
same tap - which one tastes better?

I can recommend the Beresford DACs as a replacement option.
www.homehifi.co.uk - I have a selection and fine the Bushmaster (mk1 in
my case) and excellent DAC.

Somewhere in this thread there are suggestions to also compare 16/44.1
and 24/96. That would certainly be interesting, but an alternative would
be to brush up on the 2007 AES paper Audibility of a CD-Standard A/DA/A

Faithless in particular seem to have albums and tracks that are

Almost all of my FLACs are encoded at -8 and the rest at -5 - never had
a problem on the Touch. Now running a 7.6 beta, but was also OK with
7.5.x
Good luck...

Erm, I hate to be the bearer of suspicion but 23dB is 8 bits. 24 bits -
8 bits = 16 bits. They may be selling you 24 bit music but only using
the bottom 16 bits
