If you were not able to shut it down, then get a NAS or some device and clone
to it at least that will give you a slimmed down clean version.

which it likely is. Use the VMware tools to remove any snapshots to clear
out the deltas. If there is no snapshots run a consolidate and get vmware
to clean up the deltas.
