The comments say automake 1.9 were required.  I am not sure whether it
will work on automake 1.8.x at all.  Version 1.9 is more than two
years old (2004-07-28), is there really no chance to get a MinGW one
of it?

If it works, and doesn't break the 1.9 builds, well, you might relax
the check.
