Thank you so much, Cheri.
I was wondering if you could help me on how the envelope would look when
addressed. I am confused on how it is shown on the website:
SANTA MARIA SÃO MIGUEL: Biblioteca Pública e Arquivo de Ponta Delgada, Rua
Largo Colegio, 9500 Ponta Delgada, São Miguel, Açôres
Fawnie,
The URL that I provided ( http://goo.gl/j7S4B ) has a form letter that I
mentioned previously at the end that you can fill in the blanks.
Although I didn't state how to address a letter to the Biblioteca, it's the
same format as the Civil Registries (I'll put that in my next update).
Fawn, Cheri and List
Just FYI, according to the Portal Service you should always list the
Country on its own line and it should always be in caps!

Can you tell me why there is a 20 year gap in the passenger records on
Ancestry.com?My Portuguese ancestors came to the USA during the
late 1870's and the 1880's. I need their arrival info to help
break my brick wall.It would also give me the names of any
siblings, or other relatives,
There are other ship manifests on Ancestry. If you do not have Ancestry,
give me the name of your ancestors and I will try to find them for
you. Bear in mind the earlier manifests do not have as much info at the
later ca 1900's ones.

Elaine,
I used the link in Susanne's post, and what I read does seem to
indicate that there is a gap in the records, but here is some info:
My G-Grandmother's name was Maria Vieira from Fayal and arrived at one
of the East Coast ports. She (possibly her husband) and the children
would have
Shirley,
Thank you for responding to my post and offering to help, but at this
point, I don't know of any ancestors who may have gone from the Azores
to Hawaii.

Rosemarie,
Yeah, and I deal with someone who just retired from the U.S. Post Office.
You should see the way that he addresses things! You'd think that working
for the Postal Service that he could follow their rules. He didn't even
line things up on the left!
Portugal was on its own line. I
I deal with the USPS all day long at work and they are VERY particular
about the way we send out mail. Since we have so many International
Students, we have to get it right and they sometimes have 4 to 5 lines of
an address and it makes no since to us!

Rosemarie,
Yeah, and I deal
Hello all,
I know this is a little off topic... but I figured I would send this out to
the group. For those of you who listen to Lisa Louise Cook's Genealogy Gems
Podcast. Unbeknownst to me, which is fine, my email was highlighted on her
blog and in her last podcast. It is my family that had
Ginger,
I think that the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) is the
main record holder of the passenger arrival records. I think that the
Family History Library (FHL) has most of them.
If you don't want to be told that possibly 20 years of manifests are lost or
destroyed, then
Ginger,
I want to suggest the following: Check census record data. Did your
G.Grandmother or other relative that immigrated become naturalized or
petition for naturalization. PA = Petition and NA = Naturalized. If she
was either, you should see if you can find the records via the state
Ginger,
I found this - this is all the info they give. You would need to to see if
someone could help you use this info to get a copy of the manifest - maybe
MA Archives in Boston. They are very helpful. Have you found them in 1900
census records? Were they living in New Bedford at the time?
