On the subject of Valente, I had one from Terceira in the late 1890s, so I traced it back and found something a little unusual.Children and grandchildren used Valente, but the father/grandfather had the first name Valentim. He was an exposto, thus the less common name Valentim. It seemed obvious Val
Dolores, Lourenço and his wife are probably Betencourts. The record is probably
using abbreviations.
Also, a canada is not necessarily referring to the country of Canada, but
rather a small road.

I'm pretty sure the word you are looking at is "assistente" which means that's where someone is living. You are right, usually that would be be moradora, but both can be used - not at the same time.Doug da Rocha HolmesSacramento, CaliforniaPico Genealogist916-550-1618

The marriage date is 13 Nov 1784 for Lorenco Jose de B.Court and D. Rosa

Hi Nancy,That's fascinating about that old structure.I would not be surprised if that belonged to my family from there at some point in the 1600s - if there is a chance it is that old.My own families are mostly from the 1600s and I found them in the Sao Roque do Pico records.I have Ferreira and Ser

Nancy,
I would suggest that you try the NEPS site and check out each village for
Valente. That will at least give you an idea of which village if any has the
surname. At least you can search Pico in English instead of trying to read the
Portuguese documents on the CCA site.

Doug, my inquiry truly is a shot in the dark. I've been unable to see the name
"valente" in the Bandeiras records that I've looked through. I'm curious about
the family from Bandeiras though because I know that at some point they existed
there. As far as I know I have no relation to them. We're
I don't know if it is common, but my dad did have cousins with the surname
Valente from Sao Miguel.

Hi Doug,
Yes, I looked at the CCA site and began going through the available records
looking for the name "Valente". I'm not looking for anyone in particular but
I'm not familiar with that surname. Is it common and have you seen it in any
Pico records?
Any insight appreciated!Nancy

Valente is found in Pico and Terceira. But it's also very old in Portugal's mainland. I found in my records one Martim Afonso Valente, the "Morgado da Povoa" in the 1200s.If you have Botelho ancestors from S.Miguel, it will lead to this person through Goncalo Vaz Botelho "o Grande."Doug da Rocha Hol

This is a shot in the dark. I'm hoping that someone who researches Pico may
