industry gave young Azorean men the opportunity of joining a boat and
leaving the islands, thus avoiding mandatory military service at that time.

Are these passport records available prior to 1879 which are the only ones
I can find? I am looking for the emigration of my GGrandfather Joaquim
Machado Pereira who left there circa 1870. He was in Australia by 1875 but
the family said he previously went to Hawaii on a whaling boat.
