It doesn't look like an abbreviation so I think it is João. The writer just used some crazy flourish for the tilde. As for the server error, it seems hit or miss to me using either internet explore, MS Edge, or Chrome. Some records open, then it stops so I can only open pages previously

Mike, I was not able to find my ggrandmothers birth certificate, but her marriage said she was the daughter of her mother only. I was able to find a birth of another child by her mother, which gave me the grandparents. Keep looking for siblings, marriages until you are sure. Judi

Cheri Antonio Serpa b. 1863 is listed as clergyman at 463 Benefit Street, East Providence in 1900 census. His sister Anna, niece Marie Neves and servant Marie Terra are living with him. Here is a history of the church that I think will answer your questions.
