I'm thinking it's an abbreviation for Domingos but hope others will chime in.
Otherwise the record is beautiful.

Bill, try going back to the previous page or two, then click the page you
want repeat several times--it worked for me today. I figure "it" (whatever
"it" is) will remember where "it" has been last and can go back there
again. Also, don't say bad words to your computer.

It doesn't look like an abbreviation so I think it is João. The writer
just used some crazy flourish for the tilde.
As for the server error, it seems hit or miss to me using either internet
explore, MS Edge, or Chrome. Some records open, then it stops so I can
only open pages previously
I'm using Chrome and it went thru the first time! Who knows what's
happening!!

Lower right is a marriage. What are you after? The groom's name?
(Francisco) The father of the bride? (Manuel) The father of the groom? (Joa
___) - go get his first marriage to figure that one out.
Off to go clear my cookies!
Becky,
I think it's Joaquim. Joa and the "q" looks like the small "q" in the
book *Portuguese
Paleography. *

I'm still getting the Internal Error message. Maybe Monday they will clear
up the problem.

Find your great grandfather's children's baptism records, and see if their
records might show name of their grandparents. That is how we found a
record on someone in my family.

Mike,
I was not able to find my ggrandmothers birth certificate, but her marriage
said she was the daughter of her mother only. I was able to find a birth of
another child by her mother, which gave me the grandparents. Keep looking for
siblings, marriages until you are sure.

I have had a few like that found a father's name listed on the
marriage record for the person who had no father listed on their baptism.
Also,
sometimes when they have children there is a father listed as a grandparent.
Good luck!

Just a mionor correction: Holy Rosary Church is located in the Fox Point
section of the city of Providence, not East Providence. They are two separate
cities. East Providence is the home of the largest Portuguese parish in RI, St.
Francis Xavier Church, which was founded in 1917 with the help
Did I type East Providence? Sorry, I know Foxpoint isn't East Providence.

Antonio Serpa b. 1863 is listed as clergyman at 463 Benefit Street,
East Providence in 1900 census. His sister Anna, niece Marie Neves
and servant Marie Terra are living with him. Here is a history of the
church that I think will answer your questions.
Wow, right church, wrong person.
When my cousin, Sister Hilda Correia, took me to Holy Rosary in Providence,
she told me my great-grandfather married there (he didn't. They married at
St. John the Baptist in New Bedford). Sr. Hilda was friends with Father
Paiva. They had served together
