Hi Eddie,

I'm kind of new at this too but I think you have done pretty well. I think
the mother's name is Britta (maybe Ritta) Victorina. On paternal Grandmother
it looks like there is a de jesus after Maria Isabel. The date is the birth
date and I think it's 8-15-1819 (?) maybe 1829..since it looks like records
before were 1827??? Really not sure of the year. God parents Godfather
looks like Joaquin de Azevedo de Borba,I think Godmother's name is Barbara
Jacinta de Azevedo.

Well..hope this will help some.

2014-07-20 Thread Cheri Mello
Eddie M,

I think mom is Ritta Victorina (modern: Rita Vitorina).

I swear I'm reading born 15 Aug 1819. The book is for 1825-1839. Someone
else better take a look. They could have baptized the child much later. It
happens on occasion. I can't quite get the baptism date because of the
word above crashing into it. I'd guess 17 or 18 of the same month and year
(Aug 1819 - if I have that right).

More eyes are need to confirm that year please!

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: 1714-1724 Velas, Norte Grande, Sao Jorge Baptismo missing?

2014-07-20 Thread climbatree2
If there are years missing, it is usually because the parish book was lost,
misplaced, possibly destroyed by nature, etc. What I have done when that
happens is to look at baptisms of the other siblings' children and see if
that person is listed as a godparent. Sometimes this helps to narrow down
the time of their own birth year. I think a person had to be a certain
minimum age to be a godparent. But someone with more knowledge can tell
you if that is correct. Not much you can do when the books are lost.

[AZORES-Genealogy] GRACIOSA couple from Luz

2014-07-20 Thread Eliseu Pacheco da Silva
HI!

I have this couple Rosa Tomásia or Rosa Tomásia de Bettencourt married to
Domingos José Medina on February 2, 1834 in Luz, Graciosa, Açores.
Previously I had taken notes on their children: birth place, dates and
Godparents. I have notes on the Godparents names!!! So it means that somehow
I read the original registers...

But :) when I go through the CCA original registries I can't find some of
them in the dates I had in my notes... (it means I messed up my notes?!). O
looked at 2 years before and after, but could not find them. It means either
I messed up the Freguesia or the birth dates...

(is this getting old? :) :) :) )

So, please if you have this couple and their children please let me know
about (and a little help :) ).

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Translation help, mom's name

2014-07-20 Thread Cheri Mello
Well, if others are also seeing 1819, then maybe it was a small child being
baptized a few years later. Maybe there was an outbreak of something and
they didn't take the baby in after birth so they wouldn't infect everyone
there (if they knew about such things then). Maybe they were in the middle
of the harvest and couldn't make it. Maybe they did it and that page fell
out so they redid the baptism.

My ancestor was baptized 25 or so years after his birth. The only reason
we found it was his marriage said he had just been baptized. He was the
only kid not baptized at birth. We have no idea why, unless it was one of
the scenarios above or maybe a host of other reasons.

2014-07-20 Thread João Ventura
Hello, Barbara,

I don't have the same document as Antonio, but I fully support his answer.
The only correction I'd like to make is that Limia/Lima is not a land, but
a river. There's a land in Spain called Xinzo de Limia, but there's also
a Ponte de Lima. Your surname can descend from this guy's family or
simply from others that lived in one of these towns.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] 1714-1724 Velas, Norte Grande, Sao Jorge Baptismo missing?

2014-07-20 Thread rcapodc
Sallie, actually the missing years are from 1714—1724. There are no records for
this time period. The books from 1634—1713 are really fragmented too and jump
around a lot. It’s frustrating, I know, because I have lost a few grandparents
in that period. Also, the Priest who wrote the records in the 1720’s has
horrible handwriting! You may have to check out what you can and just
guesstimate the birth.

I have been trying to find Estevao D Borba (abt 1723-1776) , son of Agostinho D
Borba Maria Alves from Norte Grande. I have found siblings, but I can’t find
him, and then noticed the listing for those years are missing.
Has anyone else had a problem with these years?
Just wondering if it was possibly put somewhere else, or if anyone has
researched this family and found info elsewhere?

Thank you,

[AZORES-Genealogy] Maria de Jesus do Carmo (?-1875), born in Graciosa

2014-07-20 Thread A Faria
Hi Everyone,

In my wife's family tree she has an ancestor by the name of Maria de Jesus
do Carmo born on the island of Graciosa( I estimate she was born about 1800
gave or take 10 years) and died in Terras, Lajes do Pico in 1875 she was
married to Manuel Jose Pereira Fagundes(?-1857) his place of birth is
unknown, they had two daughters named Isabel de Jesus born December 18,
1827 and Catarina de Jesus born March 4, 1831. Perhaps someone my have her
in their family tree from Graciosa. I realize it is a long shot but you
never know unless you try.

Thank you for letting me know that these records are no where to be found.
Rather than stressing over my not being able to find them, it is a relief to

helpful, I will just guesstimate per your suggestion. Yes, I totally agree,
the handwriting of that particular Priest is ridiculously unreadable.

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Maria de Jesus do Carmo (?-1875), born in Graciosa

2014-07-20 Thread pico
Hi Antonio,You are probably getting this information from the Pico database by NEPS and if so you should know how they generally do things. If they don't list her parents, then it might be because she was an exposta or her father was incognito. The thing to note is whether they have her marriage date. If they don't and if the baptisms of her children are not in the right time period when the grandparents are listed, then you just need to find their marriage to trace them back further. I am not looking at my database, so there is a chance I know them, but maybe not.Did you try and find the baptisms of any of their kids yet? And did it say where their father was born? It usually does in the 1800s, but nothing is ever 100%, so no doubt that information might be missing. One thing is the death date you have for her. In that time period, parents are always stated if they are known by the surviving family. They may be the wrong names, but still will be listed even if wrongly. If you can find any of the documents on the CCA but have trouble reading the script, give me the reference and I'll try my best.Doug da Rocha HolmesPico Terceira Genealogist=Get ready for NFL Fantasy Football and join me in the newly created Azores Genealogist League. 2014-07-20 Thread Cheri Mello
Marilyn,

I.T. made a change. They used to put the due date. Then they changed it
to a count down, but it wouldn't count. It only said 1-2 weeks, even when
it was 5-6 weeks.

I think part of batch 575 came in. Since I can see your due date was July
10th, I'll call and bug FTDNA. I have another question for them about a
weird admin notification that we received the other day. I think I.T. has
been tweaking the pages a bit too much.

The only correction I'd like to make is that Limia/Lima is not a land, but
a river. There's a land in Spain called Xinzo de Limia, but there's also
a Ponte de Lima. Your surname can descend from this guy's family or
simply from others that lived in one of these towns.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Marriage records, Reading of the banns

2014-07-20 Thread climbatree2

Right side of the page.

My question: When it says the banns were read in a different village from
the one where the marriage took place, how do I discern who was from that
village?

I know that normally, marriages took place in the bride's village, but I
don't know if that holds true for all marriages.

Is it possible to get a literal translation of sorts of the first 13 lines
of that document?

I have a word list from the LDS church, but I'd like to add to it with some
of these words that may be archaic in use.

Thank you very much.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Jose Borges Goncalves, Altares Terceira Baptism

2014-07-20 Thread Gerri Martin
I have been looking for this man's baptism to no avail. His parents were
Gregorio Goncalves and Maria December de Jesus. He was married to Carolina
Bettencourt on July 17, 1911 in Terceira. He came to Massachusetts in 1911,
and returned to Terceira a few years later. According to his granddaughter,
his birthdate was July 15, 1886. According to ship records, it could be
1884. Was hoping someone had him in their tree and could point me in the
right direction. I have looked at all Altares baptisms from 1882-1887.
Thanks

Dan,

Yes, they were. It appears that they discovered he wasn't baptized when he
went to get married. All of his siblings were baptized except him. Don't
know if the family all got sick, everyone was busy harvesting or what. No
exact date was given, only the year. So he was baptized as an adult.
Kinda weird for the 1820s, if memory serves me correctly.
