[AZORES-Genealogy] Torres, Vivieiros born 1840s from Sao Miguel island,

2017-03-27 Thread Cheri Mello
Repost for Dave Brown, davesalaska at gmail.com

I am still looking for more information for my mothers Great Great
Grandmother, Maria Torres (born 1846). She was married I believe to Joseph
or Jose Viveiros. He was born in 1841 in San Miguel. I have no record of
marriage or death for either. Joseph shows up on the 1900 Federal Census
for Oakland, Alameda Co. California living with his daughter Muriel. He
lists himself as a widower. I have a theory that Maria passed away and
didn't immigrate to the US. Any help would be appreciated!

Sincerely,

David R. Brown

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] explanation

2017-03-27 Thread Margaret Vicente
Hello Gordon,

In reading the excerpt, it gives me the impression of loss of
content/nuances due to its translation. Can you post the statement portion
you wish to have clarification on in its original language (presuming it is
Portuguesese).

Having said that, I think you got the gist of it but some of it doesn't
make sense.

Any/all relationships outside the marriage are adulterous. Adulterinos is
the Portuguese word for children born as a result. Doutrine is the
Portuguese word for Doctrine which may mean something else and "sertao" is
the semi desert area in the North East (Nordeste) of Brazil.

Hi Kellie,

I am off on a trip and don't have my computer but checked the 1900 census on
my phone:) and I don't see Emeryville It says Washington Township. I am
glad you found the will!

On Mission San Jose, I have had a few "run ins" with them. They are very
protective of their records and have one person who supposedly will check
for you. Last year I had reason to communicate with this person because of a
funeral I was arranging and asked her if she would check on a couple of old
burial records as only the church has those for their cemetery. She said it
might take awhile, this was over a year agono word! I had a real
meltdown in their office maybe 15 years ago when my aunt, a lifelong
parishioner, had asked if I could search. They told her ok but when I
arrived from out of town, they changed their mind when they found out I
wanted to see more than one record (my whole family was from there for
generations). I had to ask (the info was not offered) if they had ever been
microfilmed and THEN I was told that try had been and were at St Patrick's
Seminary in Menlo Park. So I and many others enjoyed a time of access but
recently I've read on this group that they no longer allow personal searches
in Menlo Park either. It was nice while it lasted! They may allow requests
but as far as being an altar boy, I doubt that there would be any evidence.
From my understanding they had only sacramental records filmed (why they

don't have the burials).

Do you have Manuel and Mariana's marriage record? If they married in the
US... It could have been in MSJ or maybe Holy Spirit since he was buried
there. I've seen the island listed on some marriages but not the village.

I looked at the UPEC records of Newark but did not see your Manuel Perry
Silva ...quite often they give the village. It would be worth your time to
look through the membership records of the UPEC in those other towns like
Centerville and Mission San

Jose.or even the other towns just to rule that out.

I'm always interested in the Portuguese of this area where my family
settled:)

Best of luck
Susan

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] New to Group Silva (Pico) and Avila (Sao Jorge) families

2017-03-27 Thread Kellie Crnkovich
Thank you Susan. I typed the census info in probably 10 or more years ago. I
had not been able to do any research for several years and just got back into
it so I don't know. I will change it. From the will I did get that it was
Manuel Pereira Silva which I had always assumed but family always just said
Perry. So that was good. I was hoping the Mission was better now when I had
tried years ago I could not get any info.

I did find the index for marriage cert on Ancestry list wife M De N Avila
(Mariana) not spelled out
Has number 4295 on the left side of the record and book N Page 431 in the
record. Can I get this from Alameda viral records?

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Prainha Do Norte, Sao Roque, Pico Baptism Record 1904

2017-03-27 Thread linda
"E",

Sometimes this sort of error can be due to a "bad" link. If you can copy
and paste the link you're trying to access, others can try clicking on it
to see if it works for them. If it doesn't work for us, then the problem
is not on your end, but an error on the website.

:)

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Searching Soares/Menezes on San Miguel Island in late 1800's

I actually knew it was Sao Miguel, but in my great-grandma's naturalization
papers she names it as San Miguel, so I thought maybe that's what the
called it, haha. Maybe it was just typed in incorrectly. I did find
Thereza's naturalisation papers, which is my great-great-grandma, but it
doesn't list who her parents are and that's essentially what I'm searching
for.

Cheri,

Since the marriage took place to New Bedford, did you contact the Vital Records
and ask for the paper the bride/groom actually filled out for the marriage
license. There was much more information on that than there was on the other
papers and online. They are not crazy to look it up as it is somewhere else in
the building but I managed to have them get it for me. I told them I was in no
rush but they did it right away. Of course, there is a cost for this.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Santo Espirito, Santa Maria - Help with a couple of names

2017-03-27 Thread George Sousa
Thank you everyone!

I'm sure this happens occasionally for those of you have been doing this
for a while... but of late, as I work my way up a certain line, I sometimes
find a connection to a different branch of my family. I believe the
marriage record that I posted in this thread is yet another example.

I thought I would post this for future reference as I'm very confident that
the Groom's parents are Jozeph de Rezendes Carvalho and Maria Leandres
Moura. This couple is part of another family line that I've researched.

In terms of the Bride's parents... I haven't run across this couple before
but I'm confident that it's Manoel da Fontes Chaves and Maria Pacheca. I
will post back to this thread if I find otherwise.

Thanks again to all those that offered help.

George

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] New to Group Silva (Pico) and Avila (Sao Jorge) families

2017-03-27 Thread 'Susan Murphy' via Azores Genealogy
Hi Kellie,

I looked up your family from the info below because my family also comes from
this area. I was wondering why you have “Emeryville” in your generated report
for where he was in 1900? It looks to me that he was in Washington Township,
Alameda County, California. I don’t know if you are familiar with this area or
not. You say he died in “Alameda” California and there is an Alameda in
California but that is a city and then there is Alameda County in which there
was once Washington Township….a collection of small towns. Emeryville was not
one of them.
There is a will listed on Ancestry for Manuel Perry/Pereira Silva and it says
he lived in Newark, which was in Washington Township. The will says his wife
was Mariana, 38, Anthony 21, Joseph, 15, Mary 10…..other parts of will,
probably filed at a later time, make ages one year older.

Hope this helps sort it out some…
