Sorry to tell you this now but you would have been better off not trying to
drive there and hiring a taxi to take you around - several listmembers know
of some good taxi drivers. When we were there, our hotel was centrally
located and we could walk to the archives and almost everywhere

Hire a taxi. Some list members may know of some good ones that deal with
genealogists. Or you can go to the praça de taxis and ask for a bilingual
driver and explain to him what you want. I've asked them what they make in
1 day and then ask to hire them for the day at that rate.
